All jokes aside I actually got hit in real life. I didn’t think I would survive. Somebody just straight pulled up and banged on me. I was hit 4 times. That shit burns like a motherfucker.
what have you done?
This happened a few years ago when I lived in the city (Baltimore). Baltimore has many different sub neighborhoods. I’m from Garrison and some niggas I used to hang with (they still fuck with me the long way) had beef with some North Avenue niggas. I was never deep into that street shit but I got hit on some “guilty by association” type shit. It’s like “oh that nigga hang with so and so (NO NAMES!). We bout to light his ass up”. Yes, something that simple can mean the end of your life if you’re not careful.
I’m glad I live in the suburbs now. It is MUCH MUCH safer. I ain’t no “real nigga” I don’t be in the field. I just had some real shit happen to me because I was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

“DeeJay? Yeah…he’s just a really honest character.”
It isn’t. It’s used by scrub lords and non-competitors to describe a character who isn’t top tier, something no character should aspire to be apparently.
It’s a ridiculous concept. Fighting games–or competitive games of any nature, really–are known to at times contain some stratagem or character known to be highly successful with little risk and easy to use. When competing against others, why is it looked down upon when they use these obviously great strategies/characters? Because it makes their favorite thing to do or character unplayable? Tough titties. This isn’t a “who likes this thing the most” tournament, it’s a competition. You play to win.
I came from Marvel 2 and believe me there were characters I liked a lot more than the top tiers, but I was there to win not to show people how awesome I think Spider-Man is when teamed up with Silver Samurai. So this concept of “honesty” in fighting games is foreign to me and against the spirit of this very site.
Shit like that shouldn’t be supported. It should be snuffed out.
The word as it’s used currently doesn’t describe that. Maybe that was it’s old definition, but it’s not really used to describe a character that isn’t top tier.
You can be a mid or lower tier and still be dishonest. It’s more just about how “straight up” the character fights. If the character is mostly using neutral or footsies to open you up, they are considered honest. Characters that rely heavily on mix ups with relative safety or doing things that are at the brink of human reaction constantly to open you up are considered more dishonest.
It’s the “acceptable” way to call a character cheap or not cheap. That’s it. Scrub talk using deceptive words.

Two sides of the same coin, really. Those who rely on heavy mix-ups tend to do a lot better than their more straight-forward counterparts. I see what you’re saying, I just believe they are one and the same.

Depends on the game. CVS2 was a game where the more straight up characters (minus CC activations) were generally stronger than the heavier mix up characters. Morrigan had all kinds of ways to open you up, but her lower damage and not so great buttons/conversions compared to the more striaght forward characters kept her from being top.

Which is why I spent some time fucking around with other characters in casuals last night.
I’m gonna have to ditch Bison until they give him some buffs.
Probably gonna go back to 1991 and main Ryu for now. He’s fucking easy mode compared to Bison.
This talk has allowed me to realize how much I’ve changed over the years. I was pretty oblivious of tiers growing up, but became more aware of them once I began frequenting SRK. When I actually started playing online, I took pride in playing the weak characters. Like, I’d be up against some MSP with a Jill team, win, then feel as though I’ve took the match with “actual skill” unlike that tier whore. Of course my ignorance didn’t allow me to understand that the God tier characters needed even more skill and execution to use at the highest levels. .I just wanted to believe they were an easy win team
Admittedly, I was a fucking hypocrite about it, too. Whenever I would get bodied, I’d bitch and say “well, you used a God tier team while I played a fair team”. It’s almost as if I was subconsciously looking for a pat on the back every time I won with a “low tier” team (which wasn’t entirely true, since I would have Blackheart, Storm, or Cable on the team at certain times) and was ready for people to feel sorry for me when they curbstomped me with a Sent/Storm/Cyclops or something. Basically, if you beat me, you cheated, if I beat you, I have more skill. Scrubby ass mindset.
The more I played, the more I realized *how *shitty my mentality really was, and how stupid it was to condemn a player on their particular play style. I was too focused on needing the other player to play how **I **wanted them to play rather than thinking about how I wanted to play. It’s just so funny thinking about it because I find it impossible to look at things from that perspective nowadays.
Since I started competitively playing Ibuki in 3rd Strike my only mentality was “I know I’m not picking a top tier, but I know the top tier can be beaten”. I went with that. It kept me honest since I was aware my character was of a lower strength than the others, but knew that I could still get something from within me and practice to win. I never felt they were taking anything away from me or being cheap about playing their characters, it was just more like a Krillin trying to beat Vegeta kinda thing. I played ST on the side with Blanka and it was worse with him, but I still sometimes won and got out of my pool one year at Evo (lost to NKI’s Chun later, but it was close match).
The one thing playing a lower tier taught me was to really dig and find everything about the character you play. Especially if you use a lower tier character you can’t afford as much to not know your character up and down.
Now these days I just prefer playing characters higher up the list, but for 3rd Strike I couldn’t find anyone more fun to play than Ibuki. SFIV the short time I was playing it I mostly went between maining Viper and subbing Sagat for characters Viper had trouble fighting. Then Marvel 3 I would usually pick one character I like on top of 2 top/higher tiers.
Never cared about tiers, I just play whoever clicks with me. If they happen to be top tier, that’s fine. If they happen to be mid/low tier, that’s fine. Not gonna force myself to use a character I don’t enjoy playing just because they’re better.
I mean, I get that some scrub might throw around the word honest mindlessly, but the term shouldn’t be confused with someone wanting to be a low tier hero.
Cammy is considered high/top tier thanks to having a great set of tools that makes 80% of the cast jealous, but is still considered honest to a fault since she needs to rely on outplaying people in the footsie and frame trap game to open people up.

My main team in MvC2 is Zangief/Tron/Sentinel, I used to think the same thing but even then giving my friend trouble with this team while he had Magneto and others I couldn’t help but just always feeling myself whenever hitting the s.HK -> AA Grab combo… technically not a combo but it’s inescapable, my main use for his AA Grab outside of that was to move full screen while calling Drones whenever he was far away, and mixup with SPD and stuff.
Sometimes though he would play Cable and it’s legit impossible to get in with Zangief lol, though at least all his assists are good (only character in the game with 3 good assists I think?).

Can I ask this? Why did people wait until SF5 to start calling shit honest or dishonest? I wasn’t around for SF4 so that’s a whole seven years of FGC I missed. But I remember when I first got into SF3 which was back in 2007, I know this because CPS3 being cracked is the reason I signed up for SRK. We didn’t have a newbie dojo back then. If you wanted help you had to take your ass in that subforum and hope the FG gods didn’t cut your fucking head off for saying stupid shit. There was none of this “honest” shit? The character was either good, mediocre or just all around bad. Then you had the upper echelon (Chun/Yun/Ken) and that’s about it.
I’m used to that mid tier life. I mained Ibuki in 3rd strike.

Highlandfireball:
I dont know the the current thoughts are at the minute with character strengths, but I’ve sort of jigged my thoughts a bit.
I think Ken and Necalli are top 2, the damage including meterless is just too high for the risk of the buttons they use to put it out, crush counters everywhere best in class that are pretty much impossible to punish due to the large variance in the distances, Necalli is a complete zoning beast that controls so much of the screen with an insanely good standing jab that will beat anything including cross ups for a reset. Ken is the opposite, but he has the ability to make you push buttons into his large damage and force you to attack. After that I think then comes Chun-Li and Karin in a bracket. Then I’d put Nash and Ryu in a bracket after that. The rest of the characters I think are significantly worse than Necalli and Ken and slightly worse than Ryu and Nash. Mika is solid and probably high mid, Laura I think is firmly mid tier with some potential. Cammy I’m not sure yet, I’ve not played enough good Cammy’s. Rashid I’m still convinced is ass.
Thoughts?
I’ve just woken up but I’ll categorize characters in 3 easy to place spots - high, mid and low.
High - Ryu, Ken, Karin, Chun, Necalli, Nash, Vega
Mid - Dhalsim, Birdie, Laura, Cammy, Mika, Guile, Bison
Low - Zangief, Alex, FANG, Rashid
As I imagine Ibuki in my head, she’ll be in the upper tier I think. Alex could be mid, but I fail to see why at the moment. Rashid has potential but I think he just plain sucks.
FANG & Gief are dead in the water, they suck.

Quick example: Ryu is considered top tier and Honest. Mika is cinsidered Mid tier and a very dirty character withagreatass.

If Alex got meaty pressure off more things I would def put him in upper mid. How he is right now though I would say he’s with the bottom. Fang I think is a bit underrated. Xian is showing his potential, but he definitely has some awful matchups though lol.
Alex completely loses all his momentum to V-reversals. His meaty setups just aren’t scary at all because by the time he knocks you down, he’s already given you the v-meter to get out of his supposed pressure. None of it really involves jabs that can bait v-trigger. It’s mostly Lariat, which not only tends to whiff for no good reason, but is super easy to V-reversal.
Alex is not good at all imo.
Yeah, Miles, I can’t imagine the horror you endured trying to fight Cable with Zangief. That has to be like a 10-0 matchup alone. His assists were damn good. They’re even better when Gief is powered-up in Mecha form. Speaking of Gief, one of the things I wish MVC3 had was grab assists. That would’ve been perfect for Tron and Haggar. Healing assists would’ve been pretty cool, too.

They didn’t… In SF4, they called it “brain dead.” Dishonest is just another way to say that without sounding like a scrub. The intent is still the same, but it’s more acceptable to say dishonest than it is to say cheap/broken/overpowered/brain dead.

You don’t even wanna know lol, it’s not just AHVB, it’s literally his whole moveset + assists… from j.HP, grenade and even his DP Zangief is just hopeless. Best bet is to get enough meter to turn him into Iron Zangief, tag Sentinel in and start pressure combined with his assists.
