The Street Fighter V Lounge - McRibs for the good, The Purge of 2016 for the bad

I’m not gonna lie, I’ve been playing USF4 lately (on ps4) and I’m getting matches pretty steadily. We even had a full endless the other night which was really fun.

We laughed at SF4 coming back once SFV came out…but now it’s almost seeming like an absolute certainty.

Pretty much. But it still won’t salvage it. It’s dead to the mainstream already. Only so much shelf life a game has, and people are going to remember the stigma forever.

At best, they have to release a Super version even though they, and us, steadfastly didn’t want them to. They have to scrap everything about this first year and restart the entire process over again. They’re not going to be able to fix things with the current process. As SFxT showed, it doesn’t matter how much better you game gets down the line with balance and characters, without a rerelease people will just not give a shit and the stigma will remain forever.

I’ve been going back to 4 a lot lately because it’s a fun game to mess around with. I constantly go to training or trials and just mess with combos.

I don’t know whats wrong with Guile honestly, just feels off. Like wearing your socks in the bath.

I gave him a couple of days or so. I’m really struggling for a alternate because all the alternates are trying to do things that Ryu’s already good at. That’s why I picked Zangief at first because he genuinely feels different from the ABC Street Fighter most characters are applying.

I’ve always thought 4 would gain a sort of “cult” following. I know the game is ridiculed by a lot of diehards (unfairly imo), but for a lot of people (myself included) it was their first serious fighting game and therefore will always have a nostalgia factor.

Just thinking:

It just feels strange that Capcom wanted to attract new blood to the series with SFV yet they decided that colors are something that need to be grinded for. Throughout last 10 years, the trend within genres (to attract casuals) have been that there’s been always some prize at the end of the level in game you are excited for. In fighting games, the best example is with SFIV and MKX (and MK9) where there’s always some free rewards. You got colors, taunts and titles free via playing arcade, trials, ranked, endless, online training, tournament and even a versus and all that by casually.

In SFV though, it’s not that possible. Free content by just playing is good hook to begin with but since everything from colors to stages and chars has to be unlocked via FM / real money, casuals are most likely not interested. Even HC players or at least somehow experience players aren’t interested in some modes because they are so fucked up. How can Capcom be so fucked up?

Edit: It’s been brought up but it’s just my two Finnish cents. Deal with it.

Yep. It’s ironic and sad how they probably didn’t make SFV F2P because they figured it would devalue their brand, and yet, they ended up devaluing the Street Fighter brand big time by NOT going F2P.

The business of selling $60 fighting games to casuals is all but over, unless you are willing to spend of bunch of money on single player content (MKX, Smash Bros). Even I thought Street Fighter (as a brand) was too good for F2P, but really, it’s the future of MP gaming. Or at the very least, selling MP games at a price of $40 or lower. Look at the biggest MP games in the world right now.

League of Legends - $0
Dota 2 - $0
Hearhstone - $0
Heroes of the Storm - $0
Counter Strike: Global Offensive - $20
Overwatch - $40 (and only got away with it because it’s Blizzard)

  • Rainbow Six Siege just introduced a F2P-esque $15 edition because they’re going after the CS:GO crowd.
  • Dead Or Alive 5 went F2P and has been doing well ever since (granted they have the sexy DLC costumes angle to support them)
  • Killer Instinct has had quite a bit of success for what was a fairly dead IP exclusive to the losing console platform

Oh and you can bet your ass when Riot Games x Radiant Entertainment’s League of Fighters comes out, it will be F2P and smash pretty much everything in its path lol.

I think the other things about the game are salvageable about the game or at the minimum the game will still be the only fighter that’s not dead to stream monsters competitively. 5,000 people showing up at Evo despite the clusterfuck means something went right.

The only big issue I have is like said above, the game was modeled perfectly for free to play that could develop over time, but instead opted for 60 dollar release. That was the big killer for any early (or probably late) casual success.

I’m still not really sold on the idea that casual gamers have any interest at all in playing fighting games. I have a lot of friends who play games casually and none of them are even remotely interested in trying SF out. I think the idea of selling the game casually was nice in theory, and I’m sure they will be able to pick up a few new fans here and there, but imo a better option would be to try and appeal to the 5000 hardcore fans playing the game at Evo

That’s actually what they did from the beginning. Even the commercials really sold the game to the FGC or at least ask people to try out the FGC. The emphasis on this game early is mostly on having solid balance and having it shoot out to competitive players in a league circuit. That part of the game is winning in spades minus some hiccups with the interface and 8 frames. I don’t see any NRS style broken DLC characters hitting the game which is good as well.

That’s what it seems like in real life for me, but SOMEBODY is buying mortal kombat for sure

Though I agree with everything you’re saying, don’t ever compare Street Fighter V to the garbage that was Street Fighter X Tekken, it may be average fighter V, but it’s still better than that trash game, even better than SFxT version 2013, to me anyways.

Don’t forget Tekken with Revolution and Soul Calibur Lost Swords. Though their more like Omega modes of both series’.

Walks in the thread*

Sees a bunch of bullshit about bullshit**

See you niggas when there is a fire to put out.

Well Mortal Kombat X has enough single player things to do that even if it wasn’t a fighting game, people would still buy it. Street Fighter much more sells the “this is a fighting game first” kinda thing that casual players don’t really jump on. Especially considering it’s 1v1.

Other competitive games like CoD, Madden, Smash and League of Legends are multi multiplayer so there’s much less emphasis on your own specific performance. Making it easier to get into the multiplayer aspect of those games. Madden is probably the only one on one non fighting game that casuals gobble up. Which those casuals are still probably heavy sports fans.

I don’t even think SFxT numbers dropped this fast. As much as I don’t enjoy SFV, I do still want to move on from USF4. I love USF4, don’t get me wrong, but I am looking for the next thing. I don’t think that SFV has a hope of getting the casual market, but it could definitely keep the core FGC group (which might be enough support with the Zenny store?) if they get their act together. I don’t mean more communication, I mean actually fixing the numerous problems. Unfortunately that might require some kind of payment, or hiring of more than one guy.

When I want or care about your opinion on anything relevant YorKeY I’ll ask for it.

That’s if Capcom can get their head out of their ass and work a miracle but at this rate, they’ll just be on permanent life support and I don’t think even a re-release is going to save the game mainstream-wise.

You do realize you are making Chun look like shit right? And as for Juri and her FSE appearing missing remember, that eye of hers has caused her random pain and seems to be one hell of a prototype, so she’s probably hiding it behind her eyepatch to take the strain off.

…you looking for a [Street] fight bruh?

This. The game is pretty much fucked mainstream wise.
There’s so much bashing or otherwise rightful criticism as to how bad the game is, Capcom’s EXTREME level of incompetence(seriously, who buries their USA division because they released a road DLC map you didn’t authorize yet at the same time only chose NOW to discredit it). There is seriously only so much great gameplay can do to salvage a game when everything else around it is such a hot mess.
And it makes it worse because I seriously do want to play and use R.Mika because I was so hyped for her coming back and I’m just like…FUCK WHY!!!

My 2nd favorite female after Juri and Capcom just fucks the whole game up.
