Does anyone else spend over half their time in battle lounges just kicking people that are way too far away for a decent connection? I sure would like a regional setting.
Well we have probably run into one another at some point in time or another. If you went to v94 on the weekends pre console, then we almost certainly ran into one another because I was a fixture there on the weekends… Played Chun. The only black Chun player there, and well, like one of only 2 Chun players total.
I didn’t frequently go to the Lakewood mall, but will (semi) the guy that got 2nd at soul calibur 2 for evo and the bets player in the nation at the time, his home mall was Lakewood and he and and the Lakewood crew would come to our AC to try and destroy us, and we would do the same to them at Lakewood. Sc2 was where I met aris for the first time (ludicrous voldo player), all around decent dude unless you were one of the Lakewood regulars who had all sorts of nicknames and jokes about the poor guy, now he’s on avoiding the puddle and commentating and stuff.mo don’t have any stories of placing well in tournaments since I’ve never placed well in a tournament besides winning one of those shitty GameStop pad only tournies.
I was at my best in sf4 right before console came out. That’s when I was still a v94 player and playing against peter, keno, mike, Valle, ed ma etc etc… All the regulars. After console came out my skill dropped because I stopped going to v94 (it was an hour drive away from me) and started to go to dons arcade instead. I met shizza from the forums and we got along well, then he got top 8 at evo and he was one of the guys I played the most.
I was one of the first people to go to dons arcade and I’m the one who told him how to get more people to come.
I was at Wednesday night fights from back when Valle was holding it at his house, to when it went to shglbmx garage (where I got my TE stolen) to when it went to the proud bird, to when it went to that casino or racetrack or whatever it was… Doesn’t make me special or anything, just makes me a pot monster that played games in socal.
Yeah I’ve talked with vicious and joe dubs as well. Joe is the guy that beat me and put me in 13th place at that denjin tournie. My Chun versus his gief… Of course I should have won that matchup… But he knew what to do about my roundhouse and I hadn’t discovered the fierce button in that matchup yet.
Good times.

Wait, you are a blanka player? I only remember 2 blank as from v94… One was dj something or other… The other was moval… You aren’t mo val are you?
Bruh. Capcom didn’t even finish the game so how do they have a “million” things going on. I liken sf5 but goddamn theres no excuse for giving us half a game with online then giving us half the online features.
I love these stories. even if it isn’t strictly “on topic” I’d love to hear writeups of various regulars here telling us their FG history
I started 3s in 2011 when OE came out. I live in Alaska so my competition was my best friend who started the same time as me, and playing on XBL with 150+ ping connections. I sucked ass but slowly improved for 3 years. any footage of me from 2011-2014 on Youtube is like scrub level. I went to Evo 2014 and played in the 3s side tourney, got 11th. I kept playing, improved a fair amount, went to Evo 2015 and won a small side tourney we did in a Hooters hotel room with a bunch of old 3s heads. I went to Summer Jam, got 9th, but really struggled vs the top few players from east coast when we played sets later. went to Tokyo this January for Coop and did well vs all the regular joes of Tokyo but mostly got buttraped by the big dogs there.
I’m in an awkard skill level now where I’m better than like 99% of American 3s players, but the top 10 or so players in America are definitely out of my reach. if you were putting money on a match of me vs like Nica KO or Yuuki or 5 star or Exodus you would bet on them 100%. but put me up against XBL and I’ll bust that ass.
I’m not DJ Vest or Moval, nah. I’m just who I am. haha.
Vest is the saltiest motherfucker i’ve ever seen though. I beat him 10-0 in a ft3 and he still talked shit and said I “got lucky”. Dude never beat me in tournament, never beat me in casuals, and would still shit talk my play constantly when he was legit not good. He also said I stole his name/character. Seriously fuck that guy.
I didn’t start playing arcade SF4 until December, i’d go to AI and the line was so huge I’d just keep playing 3s cause there were 2 setups for that. I only went 1-2x a month though. I’d roll through with Xie sometimes as he was transitioning from SF to BB, and AI was like the only spot with a cab, and he got me into 3s.
I never went to the old WNFs, i had class Wednesday nights, but shgl is the homie. He caught me up on sf4 Blanka, then when I started to expand the knowledge base of the character with stuff I’d come up with or got out of jp youtube he was always around to bounce ideas off of. Long ass AIM conversations.
Yeah I VERY rarely ever lost to him… He was a special kind of bad… I got along with him well though. But different people different stuff.
To bad you aren’t moval, that guy was my blanka hero
I never saw the vest salt but then again I’m pretty sure he just knew I was in a different league than him at the time. He may have just had that mirror salt going on… Haha… Or maybe he’s just turned into a salty mofo.
You wanna talk about salt, first time I ever played against combofiend at anything (2 day old sf4 at FFA) I beat his Abel with my Honda and he got up off the chair salty as a mofo waving his hands like this is bs and stormed out the place… Lol… Then we became homies for a bit.
Most of the top players get super salty whenever I beat them though
ED MAS face when I fullscreen raging demoned him for the win… Best win EVER.
Vest was coming to my locals for a year+ so it was like i’d see him 2x a month and every time he was just a gigantic ass.
One time i beat him in Loser’s semis so he didn’t finish in the money and he was like trying to money match me right then. I declined on the pretense that I’d just taken his money and I shouldn’t waste both of our time and take more of it. I mean I would have won the MM, but making him feel like he wasn’t even worth playing was way better than getting 20 bucks out of him or w/e.
I’m kinda salty that SFV has a built-in button check feature and yet players still go to an actual match to do that and only then go back to Char Select and start the fight
So is anyone else practicing counter hit (not crush counter) only combos? It seems like it can be a pretty useful thing when we understand the game more in the long run.
With Laura I think I’m settled on counter hit LP -> MP -> LP Elbow, or counter hit MP -> crouching MP -> MP Elbow, the latter is easier to react to so that’s why I wouldn’t risk doing MP elbow for the former.
Yea, set the dummy up to counter and go through your buttons, every hit that doesn’t cause CC will trigger that little counter hit icon on screen. Landed counter hits make more combos that were previously unavailable available to you.
Yea I know that there are specific counter hit combos (already learned a few), but I didn’t know that there are differences between crush counter and counter hit.
no, you can actually see the counterhit notification and continue your combo
i used to think like you as well, but it is actually possible to confirm based only on the message and the hitspark. evil ryu and cody players in 4 use it all the time
