The Street Fighter V Lounge - Balrog Mains on Suicide Watch

Yeah, there is definitely an element of these games that his description leaves out. He expresses the interest of fighting games as being purely decision making: but fighting games are real time.

Why, if you can make turn based decisions instead? Surely we have reached the apotheosis of head to head decision fighting with Go?

Playing in real time means pressure. It means competition between moment-to-moment analysis - why is my opponent doing this, what do I need to change, how is he going to act here - and the brute action of habit on which any technical or learned skill is based. Execution, to some degree, adds to this pressure. Countless competitive games have been decided by errors of execution, or turned around by feats of the same. So while hiding basic decisions behind obscure skill barriers is pointless, it does serve a purpose to have performing the task at its highest level be taxing and effortful. Because that very effort feeds back to affect the context of your decision-making.

What tebbo notes - the joy of execution - is also important, of course!

I would be very interested in how many of you have tried Rising Thunder, and how many of you played it for more than a short while.

Well this has easily been the worst night yet for me as far as lag goes. Previously I guess I’ve been pretty lucky; I’d have an occasional laggy match, but in general the connections have been pretty amazing. Tonight it has just been teleport match after teleport match. Time to call it a night I guess :frowning:

So doing only the single player content:
[] All stories
[
] Unlocking all colors

Doing one round of hell survival
Gets you 679000 fight money.
So as much of a pain as it is, actually unlocking all the colors gets you enough FM to buy the 6 incoming characters

Forgive my naivety, but Ryu activating V-Trigger on someone’s wakeup (which according to Ultra David fucks with their reversal input), cr.mp, super is an unblockable right? Is there a way out of it? Just been messing with Ryu properly for the first time since beta 2 and some of the things he can do with full meter are absurd lol.

Yea, I messed with it a bit. A few CA’s will beat it out obviously, like cammy’s nor nash’s. Though I don’t really know what the great thing about denjin hadouken CA is. Yes it breaks, but also spends all your meters and gives you room for a basic 230 ish damage combo, IF at point blank range. If not I think all you can really get is a crouching forward into tatsu.

Pretty much spot on. Rising Thunder was what I was referring to of course, I actually forgot the name. That’s probably all that I need to say about it.

Imagine Kendo if intent was all that mattered! lol! Intent is important, but execution is just as important.
Execution is the ‘sport’ part of ‘esports’.

As you said, we already have Go, Chess, Shogi, etc. I don’t think it’s surprising that Sirlin made ‘Chess 2’. Chess is not a fighting game.

I hit the lab today trying to get a feel for a lot of the characters and my conclusion was this: Chun Li is fucking godlike. Comboable overhead, great reversal, good anti-airs, great pokes, can confirm into solid damage from a 3f jab, great frame advantage on pressure normals, and very good stun. Overall just an incredible character, I think I definitely need to pick her up

I have yet to play a chun li in the retail version, as well as like 60% of the cast.

The super secret v reversal that only 1% of players seem to use and 100% of good players use.

V reversal wrecks so much shit, use it! Stop saving the meter for stupid v triggers.

She’s seriously amazing, there isn’t a tool she doesn’t have besides a command grab

No if I use my v meter this round to stop getting stunned I won’t have it next round : (

This is one of those things I never understood about SF4 Blanka in that he has 1f links into a charge ultra, and learning the execution, positioning, and the character specifics of which took me a very long time to learn, hell I started using a PPP button simply to plink the ultra so i would have a slightly better chance of landing it. On top of that the reward difference between what he gets compared to what other characters get for comboing into ultra was actually likely negative on average.

When they addressed this by making cr.mk +5 on hit I don’t think anyone was really upset, but they nerfed the move in a later USF4 patch.

Gating the ability to combo into an ultra even as a punish when it’s very easy for most characters was extremely confusing to me. Giving him a 1-2 meter option like most characters have to combo into it would have been a much better design idea than this arbitrary execution threshold that I eventually passed.

I’m actually a fan of mash moves though, which might be at odds with me agreeing with the other stuff, but I feel like the way they function is really unique and there are some moves that can’t really be “fixed” by putting them behind another input method without making them very weak mechanically, and then you’re limiting design space. On a stick at least i feel that mash moves are more about knowing how to do them well though.

Sirlin’s solution in HDR to make them 3 inputs actually make it so where i can do stuff like cr.lk xx electricity with Blanka which isn’t something I think that was intended by the way the game is designed.

Someone raged quit on me as he was owning me. Maybe he saw that I will be demoted in rank if the match was completed.

We need more good samaritans like that.

.

I use it all the time. Actually I think I use it too much because I never have V-Trigger for Bison. But V-Reversal isn’t always an option though.

Chun Li’s V Trigger is too stupid to save it for stupid V Reversals

I swear after a match I always say damn, that would have been a good spot to pop v reversal. But during the match all I can think about is ex armor bull heads and Lord Bison God mode… I can’t resist that trigger.

I don’t touch it unless I’m trying to whore super meter or reduce stun.

There aren’t a whole lot of instances where I can use V-reversal. I mean most of the situations I’m in don’t really call for it.

I think eventually it will become match up specific for some characters (e.g Bison should use V-trigger vs Ryu, but should stick to V-reversals against Karin).

I think it’s more for characters that don’t have a dp to use.

Saw on the front page today that SFV has reached over 3000 participants for EVO and counting. That beats USFIV by nearly 800 entrants. Now granted this doesn’t really give a picture on how well SFV is doing in general. But on the competitive side of things. SFV is looking to have a very bright future. But I wonder. Is that 3000 or possibly even 4000 entrants a bit much? If the series gets too big competitively. Would they have to dedicate a whole day for Street Fighter at EVO or extend EVO to 4 days?
