The Street Calibur 5 Lounge: The Soul Burns But not as Hard as the FGC is Burning

Doesn’t look to be the case, sorry.

It’s definitely of the same spirit. Good Soulslikes have a lot of similarities with Metroidvanias, the main difference is generally perspective (2D vs 3D, though that’s not always the case), whether you have to unlock the map through new movement skills or not, and an unforgiving difficulty.
Hollow Knight opens up the map with movement skills so I’d lean it towards a Metroidvania if I had to pick, but the difficulty curve is definitely more on the Souls-part of it. Besides, Hollow Knight is just an absolutely excellent game and is definitely worth playing.

See I have always heard of hollownknight as a metroidvania too.
So we’re just using soulslike as the new "NES hard? " I thought soulslike as 3D games based on methodical combat and fighting style variety dictated by weapons and story given through in game settings and clues rather than a proper story you follow. So basically Monster Hunter, but hard and with no fluff story.
Then again, I haven’t played a souls game ever.

No, it’s a Souls like because it takes so many elements that are derived from the Souls formula, and the Souls formula is derived from many Metroidvania concepts, and Metroidvania is a stupid buzzword that was derived from Metroid.

Hollow Knight has bonfires, souls lost upon your death location, and an open world that leaves you to explore it on your own terms. It also has cryptic story elements and a general tone of solidarity throughout. That’s why it’s like Souls.

I know for sure Nioh is like a souls game. There was also another one called Lord of the Fallen, if I remember right. Can’t tell if it was good though.

All this Souls talk and no word of Code Vein.

It has the single most memeworthy character in all the Soulslike. I mean the Devs turned one of these potential memes into a photoframe.

Code Vein is a weird one. There’s so many good things about it, but also a lot that isn’t so great.

I enjoyed Code Vein a lot. Shame weapons and build were overall pretty limited and the dlc was hella weak.

Good for a play through or two though.

According to some guy from 1up.com (of EGM magazine) who claims to have coined the term “Metroidvania”, it was also derived from Castlevania.

I haven’t played any Souls game. Closest I did was Bloodborne for a little bit.

Feels good, famalams.

It’s derived from two different games when one already did it first, is my point.

All that time devoted to SFV and you celebrate not playing good games. Smh

I liked Hellfire Knight, but I’m biased, besides giving Io actual good clothing.
Hannibal is my favorite Aragami in God Eater and Hellfire Knight is just a Hannibal.

The DLCs were really hella weak.
Just 3 Aragami and they choose weak ass Garm for the second fight.
And the Varja was just… bad.

He streamed it for a bit. Don’t think he even got out of the starting area.

Miyazaki can be heard cackling in the distance, somewhere.

I like playing things with people.

Plus it was more of “all that time spent playing the game and running tournaments and organizing my scene so it could grow”.

It just so happens that main SF was SF5.

Taking anything Martian’s ass seriously ever. I played more of the game after I stopped streaming it for a little bit.

But I like messing around too much in those games so a chunk of the stream was me trying to fight a big boy I had no business trying to fight. Think I got to some graveyard place where you went to other places and upgrade your weapons. Then got sidetracked with something and stopped.

I didn’t stop playing it becuase it was hard. I got Hades up to 16 heat (nonsense system where you make the game harder on yourself to unlock stuff and because you like suffering). Difficulty has never really made me stop playing games.

Tbh. I never found any of the Soulslike games particular difficult.

I was used to games being like “oh you lost, learn the fight bitch”, I enjoy games like this.
So Souls was just a normal game for me.
I really liked Nioh.
Code Vein was also very good for me, especially since I liked the Story.

I’m kinda pumped for Nioh2, when it comes to PC, they have a Scythe now and you can be sure I’m going to use it.
