The Street Calibur 5 Lounge: The Soul Burns But not as Hard as the FGC is Burning

Friendly reminder that this is the official unofficial Zelda game ranking out of the ones I’ve played:

Top: Majora’s Mask, Breath of the Wild, Link’s Awakening
High: Twilight Princess, Wind Waker
Mid: A Link to the Past, Zelda 1, both Oracles, Ocarina of Time
Low: Spirit Tracks, Skyward Sword
Bottom: Adventure of Link
Fuck off: Phantom Hourglass

There are a few zelda games i haven’t played, but how are you going to put BOTW ahead of OOT? Actually curious. There are things that are absolute top-tier in BOTW, but it has flaws. It’s been a good, 15 years since i played OOT, but i cant remember any issue i had with the game. I only remember not liking that tiny segment where we have to tip-toe behind the princess, and pass some guards outside the castle, or something like that. Even liked the water temple, despite everyone giving it shit.

I do need to give Majora’s Mask another spin though. I only tried it once, when it came out (likely after i had played Ocarina so much that i was maybe bored of it), and the clock mechanic frustrated me to no end and I don’t think i ever got out of the first town.

Personally, on your list, I’d put BOTW on Twilight Princess and Windwaker tier (all three of these games are fantastic but they have enough flaws to hold it back) and put OOT on the top.

Keep in mind that “mid tier Zelda” are still legit great games here. And the mechanics of Zelda games tend to be solid regardless, so the other factors are what decide things for me.

OoT is an absolutely groundbreaking game and definitely one of the most important games on that list. It’s also got one of the blandest and least well-characterized worlds out of any Zelda-game, and mechanically it has far be surpassed by other games.
The exact same criticisms can be said of all mid-tier games except Oracles actually. They’re really important, and they’re hella good games, but they’re not the ones I enjoy the most.

Majora’s Mask has the best world building and theming out of any Zelda game. It’s easily one of my top 10 games ever. It’s definitely not flawless and I know the time travel mechanic is a dealbreaker for a lot of people, but its strengths make up for it for me.

BotW did something no other game has done: made me genuinely enjoy an open world game. I generally fucking hate open world games like this, but this one nailed it. That achievement alone makes it deserve a top spot for me. It also has great worldbuilding, which, as established, matters quite a bit for me.

First of all, the best Zelda is windwanker.

Second the whole franchise doesn’t even come close to GOAT level.
Take any FF out of the VI VII and IX trio and you have a better game than any Zelda ever was.
And with that said the GOAT game is

Summary

Neo Turf Masters

Twilight Princess >>>> the rest >>>> wack ass Botw

Good points, and i agree with your take on BOTW.

Funny enough, the open world is the best feature of BOTW to me, even though I hate open world games too… I also liked the areas of Eventide Island, the shrines, Hyrule Castle, the Master Sword Trials, and the Champions Ballad DLC, but the inside areas of the four divine beasts, the final game boss, and the Yiga Clan Base all felt like they could’ve been better.

Maybe I’m alone with this, but I hated playing as the wolf in TP. It would have been a perfect Zelda game if it didn’t have that

The wolf is… kinda eh for me, I guess? It definitely feels like a tacked on gimmick but it was more of a thing that was just… there, without making the game much worse. I didn’t care about it, basically.

Otherwise TP basically feels like OoT plus one, aside from the fact that OoT largely had better dungeons. Far better world building and more fleshed out mechanics just makes it a game I’d rather replay now than OoT.

But you have Ghost Stance, Lord Sakai. That would be foolhardy.

Yoel is a genetic freak. I’d have to catch my brother first.

God i hate my job, I work for a large manufacturer of sorts, and our tech in our products is miles behind other products in my field and it’s mind-boggling that anyone would even buy our crap. I struggle with being dishonest but being honest and telling customers that “we can’t do it” when everyone else can, sucks just as much. It makes it look like I don’t know what I’m doing, when it’s like, “no customer, I’m just as shocked as you are. Our product sucks”, but of course i cant say that.

Easy.

OoT is what I consider the “Gold standard”.

Like, pretty much every 3D Zelda besides BotW builds on it, so you can focus on what these games actually bring to the table.

As for OoT itself… It has a couple problems. Mainly the bosses. While memorable, they’re absurdly easy.

The game in general is very, very easy. Enemies just don’t do enough damage and when they do, the game itself prioritizes heart drops whenevee you take any damage.

The warp points are frankly stupid. Seriously, take a moment to think about where they take you.

Bolero of Fire takes you to Death Mountain, sure, the fucking crater, that is. it’s damn near useless as a kid too.

Need to go to Lon Lon Ranch? You’re shit outta luck. Walk fool!

Kakariko Village? One of the last warps in the game for the place you’ll have to visit the most. Riveting.

And let’s not talk about that fucking aiming.

OoT has relatively minor flaws, it’s an iconic game that stood the test of time and frankly holds up to this day. It’s one of the best Zeldas ever.

But I can’t in good faith put it at the top when it serves as the foundation for half of the franchise.

Majora’s Mask is amazing. Only BotW dethroned it for me, and when we’re talking classic-style 3D Zeldas, it’s definitely in the top tier.

Word. I honestly think BotW perfected open world. The main dungeons (shrines are cool af) and bosses are meh, but when you think about the open world aspect, it’s just great.

Disagree. TP dungeons are definitely some of the best in the series.
Honestly a step up from OoT, but as I said, I consider OoT the gold standard, so it’s not that OoT’s dungeons are bad, TP just got even better ones.
