the stream

I know… I think they did do the awards stuff last year, I do remember it being a much cleaner stream.

All this G4 stuff is worrying tho. I don’t want to say it but it does smack of Evo selling out… the fact they have to compramise their entire commentry team on crucial finals night just to appease their sponsers

By you saying “We” I take it you are volunteering?

I’m not as mad about the “selling out” thing as other people are. You have to stop bleeding money sometime and you have to get your product out to the public for it to grow, so having it on G4 was something I couldn’t complain about. Besides, the best person to commentate, Skisonic, had already lost his voice, so he wasn’t exactly TV ready.

At first I was pissed off because I though that was my connection that fucked up, after all the stream kept freezing at every 5 seconds or so during matches. But when I read the comments and saw that the stream froze for everybody, I was alright. No point being salty over this.

Only problem I had was once maybe 7 o clock central time came around I had the toughest time connecting to the stream to where it didn’t lag or the screen would freeze but sound kept playing.

Also for some reason I couldn’t even access SRK or EVO2k at all come like 10:30-11 central I would just get the error like if the webpage doesn’t exist. And when I got in it barely loaded and then i couldn’t click anything. So not only did the stream start messing up but so did SRK hell SRK for me just shut down so I couldn’t keep up with anything for a good while. I was keeping up with it all on eventhubs and LOL what do you know eventhubs ended up going down off and on as well. It’s like anything fighting game related kept randomly dying. At least eventhubs would not stay down for a long time it was more random and came back up quickly.

I’m not the only person who experienced the site of EVO2K and SRK going down. I texted a friend of mine to tell me what is going on in the stream thinking it was me and he replied with I can’t get on SRK or the EVO website either.

WOW!
Some funny Shit being said here. Everyone is entitled to their opinions. Gotta love the people that say “Haters Gonna Hate.” That’s straight smarts.

Just think if you’re angry about LevelUps stream of this event, Imagine if there was NONE!

By the Way, I shit in my pants with this one. LMFAO!.. Thank you for making my Day

:rofl::rofl::rofl:

hello whiners,

don’t talk shit about Level Up guys… they were great, but shit happens in live events…
also much appreciated how they went out of their way to use Ustream instead of Stickam.

i’d be more pissed about Adam Sessler during the finals, but that was sponsors politics

so be grateful with what you have…

bye whiners.

You know what doesn’t lag or drop stream?

REAL LIFE. Show up in person next time if you’re so damn dissatisfied with the free service they provide.

Be fucking glad they offer a free stream. God damn.

I’m pissed about the stream dropping at the last point. As pissed as I could be at 1:30 AM in the morning while everyone else was asleep. And yeah, I’ve got some blame to pass to Level|Up for the issues on Friday, and then last night.

But they were still the best team available for the job in all honesty.

If they wanted Sessler to be on commentary for the TV coverage, they should have recorded it in post like they do with sports highlights commentary. He didn’t need to be there interjecting live over the top of Seth like the annoying kid in class.

I am entirely for larger entities like G4 being involved in competitive gaming, but it should never be at the expense of an enjoyable experience for the core demographic. There’s ways to retain credibility whilst also opening things up to a wider audience. They should have just got Seth and Sessler in a room afterwards, after Seth has time to actually conversate with Sessler and explain some basic tenets of the game and how it works, and record commentary for TV at a later date.

In regards with the stream dropping. Stickam was never going to work, whoever made that choice needs a ticking off. And the stream dropping out during the grand finals will forever be looked on as a failure. Look at it from the layman’s point of view and they simply don’t care why or how it dropped out, all they know is that it did die during the deciding match of the Grand finals. The culmination of 3 days worth of competition was lost due to an error. Results are what matter, not excuses.

I’d like to have seen a bit more production to the stream as well. Mobile units and interviews with major figures. The Devastation production was much better than Evo. Whoever put that stream together did a good job on the day, regardless of technical issues. interviews with the winners and losers. Interviews with sponsors and VIP guests. Fun side contests and just more generally intriguing content.

I appreciate that streaming for such a long period of time is a vast vast undertaking. I respect the efforts that Level Up made and definitely appreciate being able to watch the event live. But it is a growth industry and results are what matter. And the results were marred by several issues.

Live coverage of competitive fighting games is still very much in its infancy. You just have to be patient and allow the scene to grow and gain more exposure before groups like Level Up can acquire the funds and resources to run flawless streams for major events.

So if you want streams to improve then you can’t really complain when organizers “sell out” to larger organizations that do have the means to bring in exposure.

All in all: People are just salty because the stream caved during an important time in the event, UNFORESEEN BY ITS HOSTS. People don’t seem to realize this kind of thing can’t really be detected and stopped, and maybe even prevented; even the highest quality streams DO go down sometimes.

Notice: It didn’t go down before Day 3, and that specifically climaxed near the end of Day 3. Other times it went down were due to game switches or maintenance.

About Sessler: I do like Xplay, G4, and Sessler himself, and I may sound biased, but I can argue that Sessler, MOST of the time, was not doing anything wrong in commentating. He gave simple comments, setting up Seth to answer questions for the casual fans back home as you saw for things like chipping, footsies, etc, and really never got into anything technical himself, which is what he should’ve been doing; it’s what commentators in sports do ALL THE TIME. Sessler was no different from that. Said a couple of dumb things of course, but I expected that. Nothing that somehow “ruined my experience” when my experience was sitting at home watching others play AT Evo.

Yes, I would’ve preferred someone like Ski, or really anyone knowledgeable on SSF4, but this was good enough. I can understand why people don’t like the guy though, he’s damn nerdy. But who isn’t at EVO? (Prettyboy Ricky maybe. XD)

i got a lot of fun wantching the stream, really awesome stuff from tekken to ssf4, at last was a little dissapointing, in the last match and everything, but it cold be worst i think.

That’s why backup exists.

Actually if you pay attention most of us are more pissed with the sessler replacing the commentry team. I think we all accept to some degree that streams can drop.

And yeah, not all of us live in the US btw, so the stream is the only convenient way we can experience evo

If you were watching the whole event, the stream went down several times over the weekend. The stickam was a nightmare on Friday, the Ustream went down numerous times on saturday and obviously we will always remember how it went down on the Sunday.

I agree regarding Sessler tossing Seth several underarm pitches during his commentary, and during some of the final bracket matches he was very good. It seemed though that as we got to the finals he started interjecting and making statements, rather than being inquisitive and allowing Seth to answer and explain. This lead to some cringe-worthy moments. Although I don’t see how you need to be knowledgeable about the game to not confuse Daigo winning the first match 2 rounds to 1 and Ricky winning the first round of the next match with it being ‘all tied up at 2 all’. That was shocking.

As I said in another post, he should have been brought in in post production to commentate over the finals after someone explained to him how everything works and the basic fundamentals of the game for TV broadcast. Not on the live stream for the hardcore fans

Are you saying we shouldn’t complain about the haters because they’re free? :wonder:

Stream was mostly fine, way better than last year. Sure, the finals messed up bad but honestly the final wasn’t the hypest match to me anyway. Had it crapped out on the final moments of Gamerbee vs Mike Ross though…

Shit happens. Shut up or do it better. Or donate money for someone else to make it better.
lol @ people expecting fighting games to match the proffesional level of Starcraft league broadcasting. I think the success of SFIV has gone to your heads a bit

That Sessler dude was fail though.

also: do you guys remember the text “stream” in IRC from 2008? cause i do…

seriously,** get over it!**

This is true, he seemed to have broken the protective muzzle he wore due to the hype. XD Either way, it may have upset the hardcore viewers up in the stream, but what matters (since this will probably be forgotten I HOPE) is that EVO is getting more publicity and coverage, and that’s damn healthy. We should just leave the Sess-fail in the past now and think about the good times.
