Let’s think about something.
There are still vibrant scenes for ST. 3S. Marvel. Even games like KOF98. Games that are all ten years old, or more.
At the beginning of the lifespan of these games that are still played, there was no youtube. There were no streams. No transfers of video files. Not even any DVDs four months after the event.
Instead, many events simply weren’t recorded. Even when recorded, footage was invariably incomplete and poor. Diagonal, glaring, shakycam black band of death anyone? Then, you had to know someone who had footage, and was willing to dub and mail it. As silly as it sounds now, secrets abounded, with supposedly “forbidden” tapes everywhere. I can remember sending and receiving tapes with Bernie, clockw0rk, mopreme, Omni, sun city king, others, footage from before Evo existed, this or that ECC or TX Showdown or local tourney, or original JP/USA 5v5 footage that had “don’t tell anybody you have this” status for some reason, maybe because it was later the subject of Bang the Machine, maybe because people were STSFTN, but more likely because it was just cool to have secret knowledge for however long.
Which is all just to say that being able to watch an event on the scale of Evo live and without much difficulty, with many on-demand HD videos available right after, complete with corporate support and previews and teases for upcoming relevant games, is amazing.
Sure there was a hiccup or two, and finally at the worst possible moment, but that’s unhappy coincidence under probably the maximum load of the whole event.
Would you prefer to wait for months to watch it on VHS? There is not much to complain about, really.
