the stream

perhaps next year we should just stick to strictly game feed so we can be sure it’ll be rock solid.

fact is, we had tons of cameras with different views, fancy overlays, intros, videos, not to mention lotso f other equipment to make the stream run smoothly when moving from game to game, SD to HD – to give the viewers at home the full experience of EVO as best as we could give them.

if you’d prefer to watch only game footage with commentary and no player cams, crowd cams, user-operated cameras or commentator cameras, no overalys, no videos, no pretty effects or anything… that can certainly be arranged in the future.

do you know 100% that this is the case?

Ugh, the sense of entitlement in this thread is fucking sickening.

The fucking garbage some of you are spouting is amazing.

Let’s think about something.

There are still vibrant scenes for ST. 3S. Marvel. Even games like KOF98. Games that are all ten years old, or more.

At the beginning of the lifespan of these games that are still played, there was no youtube. There were no streams. No transfers of video files. Not even any DVDs four months after the event.

Instead, many events simply weren’t recorded. Even when recorded, footage was invariably incomplete and poor. Diagonal, glaring, shakycam black band of death anyone? Then, you had to know someone who had footage, and was willing to dub and mail it. As silly as it sounds now, secrets abounded, with supposedly “forbidden” tapes everywhere. I can remember sending and receiving tapes with Bernie, clockw0rk, mopreme, Omni, sun city king, others, footage from before Evo existed, this or that ECC or TX Showdown or local tourney, or original JP/USA 5v5 footage that had “don’t tell anybody you have this” status for some reason, maybe because it was later the subject of Bang the Machine, maybe because people were STSFTN, but more likely because it was just cool to have secret knowledge for however long.

Which is all just to say that being able to watch an event on the scale of Evo live and without much difficulty, with many on-demand HD videos available right after, complete with corporate support and previews and teases for upcoming relevant games, is amazing.

Sure there was a hiccup or two, and finally at the worst possible moment, but that’s unhappy coincidence under probably the maximum load of the whole event.

Would you prefer to wait for months to watch it on VHS? There is not much to complain about, really.

lol?
Did you read the twitter feed? Did you read the comments on the IRC channel? Did you read on the stream topic here on shoryuken?

No, wait, no one complained about the directing job (apart from the “commentators talking about the match and the camera still facing them, instead of the match” and the “commentators talking shit thinking the mic was off” problems. There were also a few matches without the names overlay.).
The problem was the stream itself, and all the problems that stream was having, from jittering, to stuttering, to crashes.
The guy on the IRC channel told us that the hotel had multiple internet lines. Why didn’t you put a few stream backups, with each line streaming to a different streaming site (say, one line to stickam, one to justin.tv, one to ustream and one to IGN)? This would have solved most of the problems, because the users could have just change the stream site and keep watching while you were solving the problems.

Was the stream free for Evo crew? Did Level Up get payment? Is it that fucking hard to understand. We here at the forums have no fuckin idea how it was handled and in these situations a company rarely comes out and tells raw business numbers. Just because it has not been mentioned doesn’t mean Level Up did it free. Usually when there is sponsors involved, money starts to move and everyone gets a slice. You can definitely presume Level Up did get paid, that’s normal when a company does something. So shut the fuck, are you really hiding behind “show me the evidence” tard-card?

Stream was awesome. I remember a few years ago when all we had was Arlieth’s play-by-play updates on IRC. Those were the days…

with regard to the stream itself – stickam was the most likely culprit on day 1 – it had something to do with player size IIRC; they fixed the problem for the following days, which is why the stream seemed smoother/less jittery on sat and sun, not to mention we also streamed to ustream to alleviate some of the traffic, since it looked like stickam might not be able to handle the amount of viewers for the following days if it couldn’t handle day 1.

i don’t know the specifics of the lines of service going to the ballroom, or what was supplied to EVO. I’m pretty sure we only had one line and bandwidth was divvied up according to need/requirements.

I was annoyed that they stopped streaming right after SSF4 match and I couldn’t watch the awards being given out.

dude.

Welcome to Level|Up - Take your game to the next level.

check that out and turn off your ad blocker. then tell me how many “ads” this “company” has on their “company” site.

tell me how much these “ceo’s” are getting paid off this shit and how much evo “commissioned” this “company” to stream evo, outside of this “everyone gets paid” scenario.

i know that being a stream monster creates a huge realm of separation between you and reality, and i know the internet makes it really easy to pop off on shit you don’t understand… but do you think its possible that people do things at cost because its part of the greater good? you know the cannons and wizard have lost (tons of) money on running evo’s for years prior to sf4, right? you know that even though things are good now, people are still making sacrifices to help people who are too poor and/or lazy to come out to events so they at least have some involvement with the community…

i’m just saying homie. think about what you think you know about the situation and flip it. cicada is part of the stream team and say “do you know 100% that this is the case?” when talking about level|up getting paid for streaming… just think “why would someone involved with the stream say something that may insinuate that he isn’t getting paid much or at all?”

then just think back on everything you just said. you think maybe (just maybe) you could be wrong about some (or everything) you might be saying?

The stream was way way way better than last year. That’s what counts. This is still a learning process for the Evo staff and level|up.

Hopefully it’ll be even better next year if people possibly move away from using third party sites to put their stream out there.

Yeah homie!

Yeah

Someone said, Am I possibly Brick Tamlin, a guy with an iq worth of 48. What if I am? That would explain my false comprehension. Yeah homie!

I guess I shouldn’t rely on my own brainpower, I got it. Why don’t I mime you and next time I see someone fuck up MAJORLY, I should just pat his nuts and blow him for all the good things he did for me in the past. Then I’ll wait a YEAR, hire him again to see a MAJOR fuck up happen again, and then I’ll get my hands on his nuts again.

Talking out of ass = thinking for self

You’re making a passive-aggressive threat but the problem is that you’re not the only option EVO has. You can imply/threaten to water down the stream next year, you know, to make us all regret what we’ve said, but the problem is you don’t have that contract on lock yet and by watering it down, I doubt you’ll win any new jobs.

This.

I dont know where these noobs get the idea that people who organize major tournaments are making bank off this shit, as breaking EVEN is a very lucky scenario. A lot of money/time/manpower is put into these events, and when a stream is produced keeping in mind a stream was never standard for this, but done for anyway for the fans and is the BEST stream to date considering we’ve only streamed once before in the entire history of the EVO series, stream monster/trolls/general nobodies are still going to bitch. I can almost guarantee that the people that are bitching have never been/will never go to a major tournament in their lifetime, and generally have no idea the resources needed to run something of that caliber.

also should note that Cicada has done more for the community in the past 15 months than some of you will in your ENTIRE lifetime so shut the fuck up.

Bryan Gateb aka Cicada has been one of the most selfless members of the community for the past year and everyone in SoCal can attest to Cicada’s hospitality when it comes to the HoC events. He does it up big and strives to make sure tournament attendees have an experience they will never forget. All the while Street Fighter has become a kind of hot commodity to profit on, the man does not make anything off of his events, as he only cares about keeping the SoCal SF scene alive, which is very rare to see nowadays. Cut him some slack, all you guys should be grateful there was even a stream to watch, I cant bear to imagine what the community would be like now with IRC play by play updates.

who the fuck do you think you are? holy mothering tits of jesus christ this is some of the most ignorant shit that i’ve ever read in my life.

seriously, get the fuck out. fucking give some respect. and fucking THINK about what you talk about next time you even perceive the godforsaken idea of sharing your astoundingly selfish and factless opinions to another fucking human being.

Be that as it may, that post from Cicada was also pretty bullshit. No doubt the threat is 100% not serious but then point of saying it was ?

people in this thread have complained saying they would rather watch a video via DVD like most other EVOs so their experience wouldn’t be “ruined”.

and if you wanted the most reliable stream possible, they could only have the direct feed and the commentator audio.
