The "Stickless Arcade Stick" Thread

Just ran across this thread while looking for another old post, and realized I never uploaded pictures of my keyboard-stick hybrid. The WASD layout being a little uneven may look like I just put the holes in the wrong places, but it was heavily planned and is actually really comfortable.

I was also into experimenting with control schemes at the time I made this, so the switch on the back is connected to a PCB that lets switches between the button layout

Another TEKCase stickless stick:

I also wanted to get a nice wooden case but a seller didn’t reply. And I’m actually glad that it happened since it saved me $$ for another TEKCase lol
TEKCases are totally solid.

Dude, your wiring looks so clean. I’m jealous. One of the issues I have with mine is I used a terminal block instead of going straight from the PCB. The result is a serious clusterfuck of wires. Maybe I’ll remove the terminal block entirely when I switch to the correct wire.

General question: Does anyone know where to buy hitbox replacement panels for arcade sticks? It doesn’t look like tek-innovations sells them, and all of the links on the first page either aren’t working, or don’t seem to sell them anymore.

It depends what kind of enclosure you have.

Any enclosure. I can’t find a single hitbox replacement panel for any arcade stick.

Disagree with the statement about Tek Innovations.

Although they lack a preset hitbox layout, if you order there plexy panel replacement, you can customize your panel layout anyway you want. I know, I did a[dual-stick configuration](Dual-stick / Twin Stick Guide and Work Log from Art before.
There just no preset Hitbox option, so you have to place the button holes by hand in there panel builder.

Here is a screen shot from Tek innovation’s website where I played with the panel builder for like 5 minuets.
I took a regular layout, deleted the joystick, replace the 30mm buttons with 24mm, and added 4 buttons for the directionals which includes the 30mm down/thumb button.

I have a TE one, V3 sa one, and a Q4 replacement panel that I am selling in the trading outlet as well as really cheap plexis.

I was thinking about just buying a cheap stick and then adding a hitbox replacement panel, which is why I asked that, but I didn’t realize my options for usable sticks would be so limited. Doesn’t really make much sense to buy a TE and use that, since they cost so much.

So now I’m thinking, I’ll just find a suitable case and drill some 24mm holes in it. I see that people have used cigar boxes, tupperware, and Xbox 360s for this. Does anyone have any more suggestions? I have an extra 360 case lying around, but I can’t find the side of it at the moment, so I’m seeing what else is an option. I considered using a plexiglass display case, but they don’t seem to be very cheap. I’m really just looking for something that’s going to be sturdy, but won’t look ghetto. And I’m definitely not interested in building a case from scratch, just drilling out some holes.

Building a custom with anything but a shoe box may end up costing you as much as a used TE.

even the project box route?

i think they look outstanding

I’ll need to buy a PS360+ and 24mm Sanwa buttons no matter what I do, so buying a used TE for the case makes little sense. I’d actually better better off just buying a custom case from tek-innovations if I were to go that route.

I’m just looking for cheap and reliable alternatives, nothing custom quality.

After crunching some numbers I think that it would actually be about the same to do a Tek case as it would be to use a TE+Cerberus+Tek panel. If this is true I would go with a Tek case. You will still be looking at $180-$200.

Exactly, except I doubt I’d be able to do that for under $200. If I can find the side to my 360 case, I’m looking at about $135. But I think it might be gone forever :frowning:

Another option is to try to find a sturdy wooden box at around the right dimensions somewhere. But aside from scouring the local thrift stores and yard sales, I don’t know where to find one for cheap.

Quick question:

I have an old xbox TE and the USB cable is trash. I have cut the cord from the PCB but kept the internals, all boards are functional. If I bought a cthulu PS3/PC board would I be able to dual mod it using the xbox te pcb and have everything function from one usb cable?

Also where are people buying the actual cable that goes to the console? I see a lot of those small USB to USB cables in sticks here that go out to a plug which connects to a different cable to go to the system. I can’t find any of these cables or that plug on the outside of the stick itself anywhere.

Yes

You mean this

I think it’s different like this one here:

Where can I get the cord in red and I’m guessing the yellow is a USB -> RJ-45 pass through plug.

The cord (from here) looks like a USB A to USB B cord.

And DarkSakul was right about the USB Passthrough, but it might be a different model than the image he posted. No reason for it to be RJ-45 -> USB A.

The former you could get at a number of places dealing with electronics (Focusattack specifically has an 18" USB A to B). As for the latter, Focusattack does have a Neutrik USB A to B passthrough, but then you would need a different cable to attach to your pcb (unless you have a USB A plug on the opposite side of the PCB… too lazy to check Cthulhu specs atm).

Ah ok. I just assumed everyone used the RJ-45 passthroughs because of what is sold on GodlikeControls with the cthulu boards.

I’m pretty sure the pic I used has a cthulu board in it, looks like the usb B goes into the board, so the plug Darksakul posted wouldn’t work for me because I’d need USB A inside the case to USB B outside.

That middle section is held by 2 nice sized screws, just remove the screws rotate the middle section so the USB B side faces outwards, then place back in the screws.

(posted this in the newbie forum, but I guess it would make sense to post it in here)

So, I have an Mad Catz TE-S arcade stick that was modded by Gummowned. He added MC Cthulhu to it so I could use the stick on all of my old consoles. But I want to convert it to a “hitbox” (yeah, I know it’s a brand name and all) style keyboard stick. But with a twist, I want to have to “up” inputs. Here’s a mockup that I made on tek-innovations:

basically it’s a hitbox with a WASD keyboard layout. the “thumb” button and the top button ("W) are both up inputs.

can someone explain to me how to convert my stick into something like that? I have pretty much zero experience with modding (aside from reconnecting the wires to the buttons that have fallen off over time), so please explain it to me like I’m a baby haha. is it possible to do it without any soldering tools/experience? I’ve heard about a daisy chain movement adapter that focusattack.com used to sell that would make it easier, but I can’t find it anymore =/ and how can I wire two up inputs to the two buttons?

if it’s as easy as plugging in all of the cords into buttons, then i’m all for it. and does tek-innovations do custom plexi glass layouts? I would like to have artwork as well… sorry for the general noobness when it comes to stick modding, haha.
