The "Stickless Arcade Stick" Thread

I noticed something funny with hitbox equipped with MC Cthulu v1.7 and an inpin converter (xbox360 or ps3, both behave the same). If you use that setup on SSF4:AE2012, it seems to not do any SOCD cleaning, but the game does it itself. Up overrides down and forward overrides back. So this is dependent on wich side you are on. It doesn’t do this when I use it without the converter. This is much better than the standard SOCD cleaning imo. I’m happy I didn’t ugrade the firmware right away. ^^

Nevertheless I went back to fightstick with SSF4. The learningcurve seems to steep and not worth it altogether. I’m actually suprised people can play with it. It’s perfect for MK, but I use it for that game only.

I have found that it pays off if you stick with it. When you get to higher levels of play every mili-second of speed increase becomes crucial.

@GLORYBE26OD, How much time have you spent playing with it before you noticed the advantage over stick/pad? I’ve been playing SSF4 for about 2 months now and I notice some progress but it’s nowhere near my stick-level. Even links that I can do on stick pretty consistent drop a lot more often on hitbox. And specials like cammy’s hooligan move and ex-ICS hardly come out when I need it. Plus, I don’t feel I can respond faster on hitbox… I still have to think and plan certain execution patterns.

I might pick up hitbox later but I’m going to try and replace the face-plate to have bigger buttons. The current ones are too small for me. It seems like a waste of money to stop using it altogether. I won’t be playing MK much after SFxT comes out…

Hey guys,

I’m in a dilemma, I really want to try a hitbox style stick but I’m not sure if I should mod it myself or buy an actual one.

Should I go the modding route, I will be getting the metal replacement covers & wire harness from Lighting Label Customs. Which should be pretty straight forward right? What sort of things should I look for when modding my HRAP V3 SA?

I live in Singapore, so I’m not sure if after getting all the parts, is it worth the hassle to mod 1 myself or will it be more cost effective to buy an actual hitbox?

Apprecaite any views or suggestions, thks!

I’d suggest trying first before spending money on converting or the official Hitbox controller. You can get a rough approximation with your keyboard and SF4 PC. Make the spacebar the stickless “Up” and map the other keys around it. The keyboard keys are obviously not round, different size, spaced differently, etc., but it should be enough to give you a rough idea of how playing on a stickless controller would feel.

If you have enough 24mm buttons laying around, you can always put them in a cardboard box. Even better if you have a Chimp or Cthulhu lying around since you can wire everything up without soldering and plug it into the PC or PS3.

I’ve been practising SSF4 PC with the keyboard and have gotten used with space as up, to the point where I cant play properly if I switch back to WASD.
Well, I dont really have any spare parts or PCBs lying around as this will be the first mod I’m attempting to do myself.

The friends I play with and myself all notice my playing level gain. I’ve been on my all button controller(ABC) for about 3 months now. I’m loving it. After you get the hang of the ABC try using other characters. You might find that now your better with other characters that you were not as good with before with the stick or the pad. My teams have changed up quite a bit. As I get better with the ABC I am able to use more technical type fighters.

I had the pleasure of testing out arcadeforge.de 's new metal faceplates and clear faceplates.
They are conservative layout, 8 buttons and for right handed people. Assembled this stick for a friend of mine.

We decided against artwork, or rather my friend didn’t have time to pick one. It does look badass even without artwork tho, has a kinda urban feel to it. Arcadeforge’s bencao told me there are other finishing options such as paint available, might check that out for another project.

Overall the parts are a very tight fit, so no worries about moisture or dust entering. German precision work after all

I use a different layout for myself tho. Might have to order a custom one…

Finally get to join the stickless community after far too long of a wait!

Light up jump button for that SWAG. :sunglasses:

i have a retarded question, how the hell do you use a stick like this? what buttons on the left side control movement and is it more effective/practical than a stick?

you can execute perfect diagonals and you can execute them faster. sometimes people find bugs in a game when you press U&D at the same time (also B&F). you can wavedash in whatever game they do that. some people say they can do circles or half circles faster but I’m not interested in circles really.

it just seems that there aren’t enough buttons to cover each input on an 8-way stick, maybe i’m missing something…

? There are four direction buttons. You can press more than one button at a time.

To expand on Toodles post, a joystick only has four inputs, the cardinal directions, diagonals are achieved by activating the microswitches of two directions together see image below (notably this is an older style joystick but the prinicple of only having four microswitches is the same).

See below

The incorrect “back charge forward” illustration is kind of tweaking me. I probably shouldn’t post about it.

Looking to get into contact with someone who can build me a dual modded hitbox. It seems like its going to be a really long wait till hitbox actually has a large enough amount of the dual modded ones that I can snag one (not being on any sort of waiting list)

If anyone has info of someone I can talk to it would be great!

try arcadeforge.de (germany, western europe)

went from 4 stars on stick to this on a stickless:

I thought there was supposed to be a learning curve with these.

With practice, all things are possible.
