The "Stickless Arcade Stick" Thread

Thanks for clearing that up. So the 8 buttons on my stock Hori RAP VX are 30mm, and the start 24mm?

Yes sir the real arcade pro vx sa will be 30mms and the start 24mms

Hey guys, I am a complete noob when it comes to all things to technology so I just had a few question regarding dual modding my existing TE-S into a hitbox type stick.

Anyways, the things I have bought are the blklightning plate and full cover, as well as all the seimitsu buttons I need. My next concern is the PCB I take it. First of all I want to allow for the same directional inputs (I do not want left and right at the same time to mean neutral, I see this creating a problem in some games) Ideally in say…SSF4 I’d like it to recognize the last input made, so if im doing a sonic boom in sf4, i could hold left press forward and right and just release right to go back to charge. Anyways I know Toodles has made it so all his stuff makes left+right neutral so I am staying away from those, would the Dual Strike on ArcadeForce be a good thing for me to buy?

Also since I am trying to get this stick up and running ASAP is there anything else I would need to buy? I have a friend who has done dual modding before helping me so I assume all the tools and standard things one need for this would be covered, I am just wondering if I am missing anything major that someone who is in the business of doing this might not have stocked.

I took some time and mine looks good. Just too much time invested in regular training with stick.

I’m just shocked no one wants to buy it.

I think your confused according to Toodles causing a roll over issue is a “feature”. If you need console support I’d snag the PCB out of one of the current low end sticks they are roll over free and I’d check around and see what PCB’s are popular in the MAME scene.

Updated the final pics of my custom hit box clone over in this thread. The tech I used was MadCatz X360 PCB (Round 1 Rev B) + Teasy Strike. The rest of the internals were stuff I had sitting around + the wiring, barrier strip, and ribbon cables I bought from a fellow SRK’er. The Japanese characters are the Furinkazan battle standard, relief carved

I see big issues on SOCD on this and hitbox threads and I would like to ask a couple of stuff and explain the way I see it. (Toodles just quoting you I the questions are directed to anyone)

First thing first is SOCD illegal in Street fighter 4 AE tournaments? Do they for some reason (unknown to me) require SOCD cleaning?

*I play charge characters and I like to do my charge moves by holding the charge button and pressing opposite direction + Punch / kick
*I believe It’s my right to play like this if I want to since capcom allows it on their games (me nor anyone besides capcom can decide what is a bug on their games and what is not)
*If I come down in the tournament with my KB witch allows SOCD and lets the game (sf4) decide what to do with opposing directions will there be a problem? As far as I know some players play with Kb on tournaments so why would it be legal for a kb and illegal for an all button controller is beyond me.

Can anyone answers these simple questions without the (ridiculous imho) argument that “a walking sonic boom will make you a top 10 grand master and win you the next EVO”. (I get that double blocking in MVC3 is a big thing but I don’t play that game and I am not asking about that game)

If the answer to the above is yes SOCD is illegal would a firmware that sends the last pressed direction when LEFT and RIght are pressed illegal too ?
(meaning Left pressed then right = always right by firmware not application controlled , Right pressed then left = always left again by firmware)
I don’t think this would allow double blocking and it still allows me to play charge characters the way I want to.

Note: I understand the point that “you should only do with an all button controller only what you can do with a stick”. That argument is valid, however an all button controller is not a stick and should not be forced to play like one. (pressing left (keep pressed) then right + p for a blanka roll is natural to do on an all button controller instead of releasing left. Releasing left is natural for a stick because ITS A STICK :stuck_out_tongue:

So now I have a hit stick in my TE. But wait… what if one of my friends does not want to play hit stick style?
SHAPOW!!!
Plugable tops!!

i still have a bit more work ahead of me. While I can play hit stick style just fine (it is an amazing change from joystick btw) I need to carve out some of the extra plastic guts on the inside. This was my first joystick mod and the wire I used was rather heavy gauge. I need to clear out some of the extra plastic to make room for the electronics. Fortunately I can just take it to the machine shop at work.

I keep telling folks the absolute easiest way to make swappable panels is to use a db15 connector.
Not only is it easily plug and play with one plug but there is not alot of space taken up by the wires.

my wiring is messy in the tutorial but there is no problem closing the case because the db15 is small and the wiring is minimal.

Knock yourself out. All button controllers are legal at Evo, and you can wire it however you might like. Good luck.

Toodles is right. Long before the last Evo the debate on Hit Boxes was raged on for months, but Mr Wizard and the rest of the Evo committee ruled that there is nothing illegal about hitboxes can’t can’t be duplicated on a game pad or arcade stick. Yes it is dead easy to pull off the same Double block move on a standard game pad or arcade stick. It isn’t as obvious but it is just as easy. On a Game bad you just have to hit 1 direction on the Left analog and the other on the d-pad, and on a Arcade stick, its too easy to set a push button to be a 2nd left or right directional input. Hell with a little “electronic wizardry” Left and Right can be set to the SAME BUTTON.
Making the whole legality issue with Hit boxes a moot point. You go ahead and do that mod on your controller, just do not get caught then come back crying to us.

That specifically was stated as not legal by MrWiz, equivalent to a hard wired macro button.

thanks a lot Toodles and darksakul . I dont want to cheat or take advantage of the system in anyway (like assigning 2 buttons on the same action). I just have the execution style I mentioned above and I dont want to feel like I am cheating or my opponents to validly accuse me of cheating.

Well I did not have a soldering iron handy. I did however have crimping tools, wire crimping sleeves, and the molex plugs were very inexpensive. While it’s true that my set up is a bit more cramped, it is easy to plug in and out, and I did not have to remove boards or anything.
Do I think your set up is easier? No they are probably just different paths to the same destination. Yours is much more compact, but mine is solder free.
Likewise this is also my first mod.

I feel like the Hitbox is small for a reason but I’ll stick it out on a te until the initial rush is over/they get more xbox guts

Just curious if you guys use your first 3 fingers for the directionals, or just your index and middle. I find it a lot easier to just use my index and middle as my ring finger seems to suck. I can see the benefit of being able to use all 3 fingers as you’d never have to move them, but I can barely dash cancel using my ring finger. It could be partly due to the fact that my panel is really ghetto and I put the left directional too high up, but I don’t know.

Here’s mine.

Very unique design Robo! I like it!

I dig it, how did you have the plexi fabricated?

Laser cutting.
