Same issue I can had when Tekken 5 hit console.
I remember people being all “IM SO AWESOME AT THIS GAME” but when I played them, they stopped.

dont’cha luv scrubs?
It’s like me and DBZ tenkaichi. I was having tons of fun running away building super then supering. Then a couple guys who knew what they were doing kicked my ass. Now I refuse to touch it. It lost it’s fun. I mean some of us here love mvc2. We love low tiers, and crazy team combinations. I’ll play Charlie/Guile/Cammy and call it team white military and play like that. Or people will play shit like team green or team russia. Sure we want to win. But if you broke out some shit like MSP on us we’d all fucking quit. Competition can kill the game for new players more than it encourages it.
i think the real problem with this state of things is that it may be true that some of us love low tiers and playing randomly just for the fun of casuals, the fun of competing at a high level where both players are on an equally high level is even better. think about how much fun it must be for sanford and justin in Marvel, or in VF for Chibita and Itabashi, or in #R for RF and Daigo. it’s the same feeling two grandmasters must have in chess or Go when they play each other in a riveting competition. it’s what SF is all about; mastery of your own potential and bringing it into the arena of powerful opponents. the real problem here is that most new players don’t have the dedication to MASTERING the art to the point where both players will be crazily good and impressive and also the fact that no one likes to take losses to improve their game. everyone seems to just want instant gratification from their gaming.
which of course, is fine by me. i’d rather master a select amount of titles and be a big fish in a small pond, i guess.
Forgive me if anything that I say has been said already but… I didn’t read every post.
The scene needs more (humble) leaders/teachers… the type to play against a lesser player, who pulls off something that takes obvious practice, and acknowledge it. That gives players confidence to want to dig deeper and compete with the big dogs and knock them off the throne (if possible). Some people need that… there are few that get there ass kicked and want to improve. Too many folks give up too easily. We need to pull more people into the scene (who can take it seriously) and welcome them with open arms (not literally) and teach them each and every aspect of the competitive fighting game scene.
In the long run, your only helping yourself. Bringing more competition elevates everyone’s game, it makes everyone that much more serious (without getting paid on a bi-weekly basis) and should ultimately help the scene grow. I think online gaming will help a lot since arcades ain’t poppin’ everywhere.
So stop making fun of scrubs and school them. Those who are willing to learn, will.
We’ve already been thru that
What makes it difficult for fresh blood in this genre is because it is 2d. A gift and a curse. 3S had the greatest character models I had ever seen. But when my Halo friends come over, they say it’s ugly because it’s 2d. Frustrating…:annoy:
That’s cool and all, but it’s not necessary for you to roll your eyes like a female. Exactly what I meant in my post, you want to put down another person cuz you feel like you’re above them or you know something that they don’t. If it’s been said, then it’s been said. I stated in the beginning of my post, that if it had been spoken already, I wasn’t sure. Just trying to contribute.
So… are you coming on to me?
Ultimately, the only certain things we can do about the fighting game scene here in America is put info and videos about games on the internet.
On the other side, it would really help if, somehow, the developers made a training mode that was actually fun, and/or worthwhile rewards that encourage learning the game.
Maybe we can suggest rewards and modes like that. This board seems to have some respect in the FG community. Maybe great suggestions will go up to people who will listen.
No… just pointing out your feminine qualities. Not that anything is wrong with that.:wonder:
3s IS ugly. What are you talking about?
Shit, I like basketball. I know I’m not the best but it’s fun talking
shit to my freinds that aren’t better than me. Do I want some super
street ballin, half court leaping, cross you up and bounce it off your
forehead pimpin, playing since he had feet, uber negro of death coming
around and whoring me and my buds on the court?
No.
Would I keep playing when he makes the teams uneven by just BEING on
the other team?
No.
Would I want him to coach me?
No.
Call me a scrub, but eh I don’t like the game THAT much
to dedicate time to it. Rising to the level of someone that’s
already much better than you is a daunting task. Frankly I
see teaching casual players to be hardcore is pointless. If
someone wants to dedicate themselves to a game to be
hardcore they will seek the truth behind the game. Otherwise
ignorance is bliss.
Well SNK when they release NGBC and Tenka many will see they have come into their own…the sad thing is the US of A wont see any of those for a while…SSVP many feel got it right…
Then came NGBC and Tenka…very very good games…SSV I thought was okay…but doesnt remotely compare to Tenka…REMOTELY…IMO.
didn’t you know? guilty gear is too
If the fighting game community was relying on Tenka to attract
new players, then they might as well be relying on budweiser. Only
someone who’s drunk would even consider that a reliable option.
Lol. In comes UnCauzi with the random Tenka hate. Seriously, unless you’re really hardcore in to SSVSP, Tenka is marvellous. I couldn’t care less that they nerfed a few chars. The new/reborn chars are make up for it tenfold.
If tenka were to come out in the US, with serious marketing behind it, I think it could do very well. It has a large cast (around 45 chars) 6 grooves, pretty good balance (well, at least compared to games like 3S, CvS2, and MvC2,) great bg’s and music, good control (it feels very good. i remember the loke testers commenting that it felt very “CvS2-ish” and that’s not a bad way to describe it (thankfully it doesn’t look CvS2-ish!) and is pretty noob-friendly. All around, It’s a great game for casual players and for hardcore players. [Insert screaming “Tenka for EVO!” t-shirt joke here]
Plus, they brought back the fucking bombs. How can you hate on that?
…seriously.
Well…SNK I don’t even think would do all that advertising in the US for a 2d fighting game. I mean the game looks decent but…it doesn’t look like anything that would wow the majority of US gamers today. It’s a fun game no doubt…but I wouldn’t totally stop playing 3S or Guilty Gear and just play the game for a week straight or nothing.
CvS2’ish? Yeah and we all know just know how CvS2 drew in the masses.
This thread is more about what to do to improve the scene not to attract
people to that POS. Trying to get people to play it will probably push even
more people away from the scene than anything else.
“So this is what people are playing? Maybe I’m in the wrong genre.”
This game has been in the Philly arcade for months now and the only
person who seems to humor it is me. This is an arcade where people
DO play SNK games. So it’s not about favoritism it’s because the game
does NOT have what it takes to attract even passerbys to it’s fold.
Jcas,
Gotta give you kudos for pimping Zbattle:tup: Why half of this site is not on that is ridiculous. As if we were all too cool to play the Snes versions when it came out…
If you’re trying to get players who primarily play MVC,3S, CVS2, etc to give a look into other games like Rumblefish, Tenka, and other random games, I guess some of you have the right approach. HOWEVER, if you are trying to get mainstream gamers to look at these games, don’t even bother. The casual gamers sees fighting games in 4 categories:
For the most part, 1 & 2 come to the forefront for most casual gamers. This is why you will never see casuals playing Tenka, Rumle, etc. If you leave this site and head out and actually ask casual “video game” players on the street if they have even heard of most of the fighting games that are discussed in these threads, they would just give you a puzzled look. Sure, I know everyone on this site is heralding 3S as the future, but if you were to ask a regular gamer to name a character on the “Third Installment/Incarnation” of SF3 (mind you, they probably didn’t even know a SF3 existed) they would not be able to answer.
Want to convert SRK players to give other titles a chance? Keep doing what you’re doing by making threads and offering vids. Eventually, some people just might nip at it. Want to get casual gamers to give fighting games a hard look?
Simple. INTRODUCE THEM TO THE WOLRD OF COMPETITIVE FIGHTING GAMES BY STARTING WITH THE GAME THAT RESONATES THE MOST WITH THEM. YES, SF2.
