The stagnant fighting game scene and what we as players can do about it

SRK could do it, sure. Or someone could start a site to do it. I just don’t think a major gaming company would do it. It’s a good idea, though.

This is a really, really good idea.

Something like that could even exist in a stickied, regularly updated thread somewhere on Shoryuken. Wouldn’t be that hard at all, and it’d be an invaluable resource. Someone could create the thread, and then go to the individual division forums asking posters to update the thread with information on their area. It would practically create itself. And yeah, there would be upkeep involved, but that would require 10 minutes a week to take the new data and put it into the original thread.

…someone get on that. :stuck_out_tongue:

It would better better to have a graphical map or something… you click on it, and then you zoom in and get a listing.

Hrm. What is that free map thing where you can put in locations? there’s little tabs and you can zoom in and stuff? Anyone know what I mean? There was one in GD where people put in their locations and stuff. DAMN, the name eludes me…
that would be perfect right? and ANYONE can add to it.

So we all vibe on the problem: we need new fighting game fans.

I agree with what others have been saying about the videos. Pump more videos out.
Also, SRK just opened up a Wiki. Maybe compiling info from the forums into there will help newbies learn on a small scale. The forums aren’t exactly the best places for accessing info.
Make it easy to read too. I was just reading on the news page that people were using NumPad notation for games other than SC (236P instead of HCF + P). Even newbies are familiar with the classic notations.

im a big 3s fan-but i ask u al this question.in the yr 2006,is there any interest in a 2d game,let alone a 2d fighter?

SFA3: Max…

2d games are doing just fine on portable systems, it’s not dead.

It’s just that these games aren’t backed with as much cash from the industry as they aren’t always profitable

Gues what? I just screwed Eva Mendes, and now, Karla Hamolka is getting the Noble Prize for Peace.

Sorry. I had to laugh today. Ak and jcasetnl, I love the way you two think. Actually, all the ideas are great. Funding is also very important. Maybe ninja girl scouts would work out.

How about we all try to get SRK a television channel by using the power of public cable television…or just a television show on public cable that gives out the highlights of tournaments in the local areas, as well as casuals. I hear it would be not too difficult to request time.

Also, some advice on fighting, game reviews, articles, and HOT DICKINGS for the ladies. Run by the SRK through the use of those who are the big guys in that particular region. Example: Negata Lock II would be an ideal candidate to run the Ontario scene version of the show, with casual information and upcoming tourneys. If it really takes off and gets the attention of a local television station that broadcasts nationwide, we could broaden the range to, probably, a national setting. Who knows?

or…we could just make episodes and post them online through the usual means.

Something similar to Gamepro, or Electric Playground minus the emos and a high emphasis on the fight.

As for the google results, I noticed that the website doesn’t abuse the power of meta-tags. Street Fighter, King of FIghters, Capcom, SNK, and the like are hardly even mentioned in the keywords. A modification to that could possibly boost the results.

Man to me heres my take on it and I ve spoken it to some people as well (that way people know I am not one to just talk behind peoples back…I will say stuff to them also)

Theres no problem with people playing 3s…not at all…its just the fact that people are not evolving and are stubborn are holding the community back(as well as the new FPS generation but thats another take). There is a particular gathering in my area that I dont really go to much primarily because only the top three are played there…its like they are saying “We are stubborn, and we are gonna die that way.”

And to me just playing 3 games is limiting myself, I LOVE fighting games period…I do not want to limit myself to just 2-3 games…hell maybe 4(the big four). I’d rather be the jack of all trades than just put all my eggs in one basket and if that basket breaks I’m screwed.(Just my philosophy)

Now dont get me wrong, playing the top three is not bad, but many of these people are very close-minded.

I am not close-minded. I may not necessarily like a game but I will still play it enough to be on a high level. Many won’t even give some of these new games a try.

I personally am gonna find it sad that in a decade Street Fighter III 3s as good as a game it is is still gonna be played majorly at EVO…in a decade folks…I dont see the major games changing…it’ll be Marvel, 3s, CVS2, GG, And Some Tekken.

I mean geez even if Capcom did some sort of upgrade to Street Fighter 3(Not capcom figh EVO) it would be better IMO than playing the same game for like 50 years. You can have the same sprites like KOF and stuff but add different moves and stuff and that essentially makes it a new game. Geez Look at Alpha 1-3…same sprites.but new different games!!

I find it funny the major tournament in the States is called EVOLUTION…though I see no signs of such evolving…none…

That should be easy, you just have to be willing to compromise. Take a tourney like Evo and include games you normally wouldn’t that still have a following. SSBM, older MK’s, DoA, the Def Jam Vendetta series, even wrestling games. Just throw any shit out there we can and see what sticks.

I Posted a few threads back but we are currently making something simlar to this for the west coast fighting scene. It will cover major tonrys, have video interviews, basic gameplay stuff thats gonna be on wiki but we will show it in video form. Look for it soon!

is it me, or does it seem that the new generation of fighting game players fall into playing mashers… eg. DoA 3-, MK, etc… and then they proceed to take their mashing habits to soul calibur, mvc2, guilty gear, etc…

THE FUCKING TRUTH

n3ss that is a good idea, all fighting games need is exposure. even if you have to film the tourneys and edit them yourself and then put them on tv.
Look at poker, ive been playing poker since i was 13 years old(20 now) back then if you said you played poker you were looked at like some kinda hustla/degenerate. barely anybody knew how to play texas holdem five years ago, now look at it, there is a poker tourney on espn everyday. and it all started from people getting together and filming the tourneys(worst editing ever) from the 80’s-early 90’s and getting them on tv, and showing the public how much skill is involved and that poker players arent low life scum.
imo thats all we need to do, show the public that gamers arent geek/nerds/children, and show how much skill is involved and the people will come.
also i second what dark geese said, if the players were to open their minds to something other than capcom, the community would grow. just this year so far(feb) snk has released TWO great fighters, so pick em up and open your horizens.

Exactly how I feel. I love “classics,” but I want new fighting games on a more consistent basis.

Amen so I aint the only one that feels this…good to know…because this is what I see and many others are seeing the same thing…I totally agree.SNK has released 2 DAMN GOOD FIGHTERS…esp. Tenka OMFG…see what else there is to offer…not saying you have to give it up guys…

I still play 3s for tournaments myself…but also see what else is out there…support the scene.

And yes…the new generation of fighters is mostly button mashers…they dont know what mindgames are and all those other things we have grown accustomed too…

What if the company releasing the game created a forum and gave an address right in the instruction booklet? More experienced fighters could post strats and newbies who bought the game over time could check it out and look over strategies and such. Would be easier than finding a site like SRK which covers a LOT of games.

but in teh same respect, it could be like gamefaqs where every retard in gods creation signs up and posts their 1337 strats with the worst possible characters because they look FREAKIN COOL, or OMG, THEY’RE SOOO COOL IN THE MOVIES (eg, spiderman and wolverine scrubs in mvc2)

That’s very true, but at least it would give folks a place to start as opposed to never finding out more advanced strats and just giving up you know.

that’s true, but you also have to take into consideration that a lot of people would be unwilling to learn more. there’s a few dudes down here by my school that played mvc2, until they played me. i heard nonstop how they played for years… and now they quit cold turkey beacuse i brought some NY mvc2 skill to northeast PA, and scraped them. they wouldn’t even bother letting me teach them. wtf is up with that? laziness i assume.

SNK releasing games in Japan isn’t doing much good for the American fighting scene. If any of the hot new SNK games ever make it to the states it would be great. But as long as they want to keep barfing up old KOF games and crap like SSV, SNK is doing the US fighting scene more harm than good.
