The stagnant fighting game scene and what we as players can do about it

Lincoln frees the slaves! And Man lands on Moon!

Back to topic, this is the age old question that never seems to get anywhere…sadly.

You’re very right, but whenever company A does #1, fanboy A complains that “OMG it’s teh BUTTON MASHER!” #2 just has to be done, even if it lags. The 1p experience would be good if the companies would actually do it right. Last time I checked, Tobal 2 had an RPG-ish 1p mode that is widely considered to be the best 1p mode out there. I also really liked Edge Master Mode from Soul Blade. Individual stories for each character, not too long or too short, had it’s secrets, had it’s challenges, etc.

You’re pretty right, though, but you forgot one thing that I always consider to be major: ADVERTISING!!! You do not know how much better a game will sell if there were commercials for it. Trust me.

jcasetnl: As always it is a joy to read your well written post but…

The change I was speaking of wasn’t OG Street Fighters (the SFII’s) to the New School SF’s (Alpha and up) it was changing from Capcom in general to Non-Capcom, giving the new stuff from Sammy/Sega/SNK a shot because nowadays they are the ONLY ones still giving us NEW games (Hyper SFII does NOT count as new folks, sorry) but all in all it was a well written post - just wanted to correct you on that one aspect.

As for Old School/New School I’d like to think of myself as Young Old School, I’ve been playing SFII since I was 9 in Summer of ‘91 at some random Corner Store in Cleveland’s East Side (the fuckin’ hood!!! see “Bone Thugs & Harmony” lol) but when Alpha 1 came out - I hated it as well “Ken looks like a GIRL!!!” but I got Alpha 2 and my attitude changed BIG time, hell Alpha 2 is still my favorite SF of all time.

But years went on, Cleveland’s arcades died out one by one in the 90’s then in 1999 only ONE was left and it had the same stuff in it we had been playing for years, only new thing it had was 3s then I tried KOF 1999 DM (KOF '98) on Dreamcast and it felt good to have something “New” to play, like I touched SFII for the first time again and it felt GOOD - what I’m saying is yeah we all grew up on SF but change isn’t a bad thing, let’s give other guys a shot, that was the change I was speaking of.

I mean the “scene” has been playing the same shit for 5+ years now, I just feel it’s time to move on to newer games, just cause Capcom didn’t put them out doesn’t mean they ain’t out there.

And no gaming ain’t some religion for me lol, far from it I only do casual nowadays at best…I’d like to get back into the tourny scene soon though - I might make a return in CvS2 @ Texas Showdown 6 to see if I still got it.

Quoted for emphasis.

sf2 sucks. why play this game. it was fun when i was young and it was new, but with all the news fighting systems out. why would anyone play sf2, other than for old school kicks. that games is trash. step up at least to the alpha world, if your fully caught in the sf2 world. yuck. sf2. much offense. i hate that game now. its not even the least bit entertaing. want all your characters. go play cvs2 and master it and help out the scene. sf2(pffffffffff)

Also quoted for emphasis…

this is a good thread so far…:tup:

let me ask a question…
what is it where all these kids get so rediculously into FPS games, but street fighter is no longer an apparel? is it because people think they’re easy beacuse they’ve speant 10 minutes on trying to learn it, or do they think that thye’re too complex as soon as they start up, and therefore don’t WANT to learn?

a little off base, but WHAT THE FUCK is up with the latest DDR trend? the arcade that’s in the mall over by school has DDR and all of a sudden, people are going again… of course, it’s cheap though. 75 cents for 4 songs on DDR Extreme, but still… it’s more than when they had MvC2, 3 credits for .25… WTF

Because people prefer shooting and killin’ people>beating up people. Sure it’s easier but it’s also fun.

that’s not what i mean…

ggxx#r / slash, street fighter and mvc2 are also fun when you figure the shit out. but do you think it’s because they can accurately put a FPS game online in “real-time”, and they can’t for a fighter (even though zsnes shut that idea up)? or is it osmething else?

like i said before… when zbattle came out, a lot of kids started to get good at street fighter, playing people on there, like gumby, vintage, red-impact, fatherbrain, etc… now there’s a decent community for snes ssf2 now online… do you think mvc2 or ggxx would see a lot better attention if it could accurately be put online? i hear reload on xbl is kinda weak…

Hey what?s up everyone, I don’t post much in Fighting Game discussion, mostly in Apex: North Cali. threads But anyways I was actually going to start a thread(poll) but thought I’d post this info here first to get a reaction from you ?the community? to me and my friends proposed idea.

The location: Is a website we?re creating www.doubleko.net

The idea: Is to bring the fighting community the news and coverage of the tournaments being held (starting off with tournament coverage held on the west coast and maybe east coast in the future?). We?d like to create a online type show (think of the 1up.com show but focused on the fighting game scene) featuring match video?s of the top 10 matches from each respected game (with a few random matches here and there), possible interviews of the top or known players (to share strategies, or build up rivalries?) and coverage of that said tournament in general. We?d include specials on strategies for beginners relating to specific characters (just like the few that have been made already for 3s). It would be basically trying to get more exposure to the fighting game scene and hopefully expand the community by showing it to others.

How: Through our web site www.doubleko.net shows will be broken into segments and streamed off the site. We?ll also have it available for download (higher quality) to watch on your comp, ipod video or psp.

But seeing how our/this community is somewhat critical I ask you guys ?the community? if you feel like you?d want or like to see something of this type? I?m sure we won?t get it right the first time. I?m more curious to see if you guys would like to see this happen. Plans are already in the works, the ball is rolling. Anyone with any thoughts? Opinions? Am I crazy for thinking this? Hahaha, hopefully I won?t be bashed. But as a player and someone that?s a part of this community I personally would love to see this pan out, which is why I?m working on making this happen. So the question is does any of you?

don’t shit on this thread that’s going good. make a new thread where you can be all the salesman you want.

m1x4h: Read the title of this thread " The stagnant fighting game scene and what we as players can do about it."

I’m a player, I proposed a idea I have to help that. Also the site would be free! So I’m not selling anything…

the way you presented the website as if you’re some kind of self proclaimed fighting game superhero… besides, this site’s doing a shit load of good along with the video sites that are around. having another site wouldn’t do shit.

Well I’m not some damn super hero hahaha. I just had a idea that I make site for FREE on my own time, that would expand upon on what current video sites are doing. Combovideos.com for example has match videos up? But not alot I don’t see orth cali regionals up there or many tournys for that matter. I don’t see interviews on there? There charact specific guides yes they do have a lot. I’m just again trying to expand on something that out there and make more show based to appeal to a larger audience… and show more frequent tournys… :arazz:

there’s several sites

video-opera for example has tracking on most of the videos up

srk has interviews that we post up in this forum (interviews of top players, because in reality, unless you’re bas, developers don’t count for shit)

for almost all the rest of the OLDER videos of anything, there’s several hubs on direct connect, not to mention mIRC channels that SRKers go to…

there are several ways that we already get everything we need, and most of us (which is a LOT of the US 2D fighting game community) wont change to a new site… what’s out ther eis already relatively easy to get.

I get what your saying I was just posing an idea for bring new people in. something more easier to access. reading a interview is cool, i personally would rather see a vid. yes there are other sites, mirc(which a lot people don’t use) the direct connect(again a lot don’t use). I’m not talking about the hardcore i’m talking about new comers having easy access to view what our cmmunity is doing and how we do it and visually see that top ranked player. but if theres not a need fine. it was gonna be for fun. but thanks for your feed back. :wgrin:

And ladies and gentleman, here is another reason why the community is falling.

What reason is that?

the only reason talked about thus far, and i admit it, is there’s people like me who is a complete asshole. other than that, i see no reason, because there’s people here having a decent conversation about what SHOULD be happening in the fighting game world today

just too bad, developers of capcom don’t read here… but on the other hand, sammy and namco aren’t doing half bad…

Like I hate that I cant find anybody to play me in 3s in Nebraska other than 3 guys that “might” play me for a lil while until they start losing. Then what??

Try to get some random guy on the bus to get into the game?
Then u travel out of state happy to get some good casual and hope somebody plays a solid Chun so u can figure out what to do in that match up.

Its hell out here trying to play stuff and stay serious at it.
