The stagnant fighting game scene and what we as players can do about it

i agree with this statement, not just younger people but people outside of the genre. me what i try to do is , when im going to a lan/halo party, i always take my xbox with sfac or kof02 in it and when i take the disk out there like, “what game is that”, i say street fighter, and they immediately come back with “oh, that shit was crazy back in the day, yo pop that in when we’re done with halo.” next thing you know they’re interested in the game and wanna play more.

they’re not hip.

people at school aren’t talking about them. there are no commercials. bottom line, there is no draw. the average person is a sheep and will play what everyone else is playing.

If you have some competition, of equal skill even, yeah… these games can be fun. but if they’re not exposed to them, and don’t know about the mindgames, they won’t care.

people don’t go to arcades to play games anymore, if anything just to kill time before a movie.

only thing I can suggest is when random joe plays you in the arcade, encourage him, teach him, and let him know about the mental part.

my 2 cents

havnt read anything yet. but keeping this marked for now.

Why 2-D and not fighters period?

SG has new games?! - WTF?!!?

Also why I never talked about MotW is because it’s well…BROKEN - Hotokomaru for the win.

Respect just went down the drain. How the fuck is MOTW broken? ESPECIALLY from the guy who claims 2K2 as highly playable (which happens to be FAR MORE BROKEN).

Broken, how?

not to say anything stupid but i was talkin to obot on aim about this situation. most fighting game enthusiasts needs to do what i was planning on doing and try to spread it around in whatever area your in. im gonna be holding tourneys by just printing out some info on it. and put them up on the sides of hood stores, and etc. im probably either gonna talk to managers of stores to host legally or im gonna hold em like they were small block parties. i really want ppl down here to get into the fg scene. i know it can be done.

Down here in G-Town these are the competitive games that are played the most
Halo 2 35%
Halo 1 20%
Smash Bros Melee 15%
DOA 12%
Street Fighter Ol School either World Warrior or Hyper Fighting/3rd Strike (my group) 8%
Guardian Heroes 5%-its spreading cuz of us. but most people say its not a real fighting game. we say it is if you play 1 on 1 with somebody.
DDR 3%
Other 2%

yup that about somes it up.
I would like to get CvS2, 3rd strike, MvC2, Guilty Gear going down here. But i think either NGT4, KOF2003, 3S, or MvC2 can make it. Because guys down here in Galveston are like capcom fighters handicap man. they cant get off a decent qcfx2 +punch properly to me thats sad. as a matter of fact they cant do a hadoken without complaning. sad indeed.

It seems like so many threads of this nature have surfaced during the past several months. I guess this means people are actually passionate about finding a solution.

My suggestion? Why not have this site promote its most marketable product? Yea, SF2. Does anyone even remember this game? Probably not because this site practically has no mention whatsoever of SF2. And don’t attempt to counter that statement with “well, we ocassionally talk about ST.” Because, ST is hardly SF2. Moving along. The only fighting game that has ever been acceptable to mainstream gamers is SF2. Yet, this site seems to have forgotten that. I’ve had numerous occurences where somone will ask me (after watching me play & some friends play SF2) where can they go to find out information about this thing called “competitive gaming.” My first thought is to mention SRK, but then it always eventually dawns on me. What’s the point, this site doesn’t even talk about SF2. Ultimately, I just end up telling them about what things were like but I don’t refer them to this site because this site has nothing to offer them because these are mainstream gamers who fondly remember SF2, not all these other post-94 Fighters. I’m not implying that all these newer fighters aren’t good, it’s just they’re not as recognizable as SF2. If you really want to get mainstream gamers to take a look at fighters, you have to start with the biggest draw. And that is, and always will be SF2. Re-introduce SF2 and all the facets of competitive of SF2, and then gradually ease these players into the new stuff. Meh, done ranting.

thnx for the advice. im gonna bring out the ancientness. that is sf2, and my snes. huhh

Seriously. Hokutomaru of alll people.

i think there are two thing that could really help out arcade fighting.

1: make the games cheaper to play. no, i dont enjoy sticking in 75 cents or a dollar to lose in a single round. at that price im likely to play for only a couple credits before i cant stand the rape on my wallet anymore. im much more inclined to pay 25 cents a game, and will even pay much more than i would pay for the more expensive games, since i will get much more gametime out of it.

2: please, stop making fighters with consoles in mind. dont get me wrong, i love when fighters come out for consoles. it allows me to practice without wasting money every time i try out a new character. the problem is that these things come out to consoles shortly after the arcade, and in some cases they will come out at the same time, or even console only. people like you and me will still go to the arcade to play against people, but most people will think ‘why go all the way to the arcade to pay to play the same game i can play at home?’

Mycah: Don’t you live in Houston? Yet, I haven’t seen you at any regionals. Hm.

This is why the scene is stagnant… no one wants to support it. Tournament in the town you live in and you don’t go? Nice.

And SNK games don’t get any respect because none of their players go to the tournaments, and if they do, they don’t actually ENTER (except the K-Force guys, they came to TS5 to play 2k2, entered, and won!). KoF 2002 had 9 entrants at TS5, Garou had 6. These tournaments were announced way ahead of time, but no one showed anyway. Which is always the case.

Excuse me…sir, I just moved here - I should be @ TS6, but if you wanna call me out on my Tourny attendance just look up Midwest Tournys (my hometown is Cleveland, OH) Since 2001 I’ve been all over the Midwest and I was active up until January 2005 (I was even @ TS2 in Austin back in 2002) - But Jan '05, that’s when I moved to Houston, didn’t go to TS5 cause I was busy getting set up in Houston…with 3 jobs it was kinda hard to go ya know lol.

Even helped run Tournys - pretty decent sized ones as well over those 4 or 5 years.

Look up Cleveland’s “Mid-Noon Mass” Tournys, most of them were around my birthday everyyear (Oct. 9th)

So how about you explain why Garou is broken?

It’s not really - I made a hasty post that I retract, sorry about that.

But lil’ ninja boy’s QCB+P is pretty damned fast lol

I thought Kevin was the top tier in Garou…

Doesn’t matter, though, as it seems to me that everyone can be good (seen a vid in which a Rock beats a Kevin, but it’s old) because it seems that everyone has something. There ARE low tiers (Freeman, I think), but they have just as much a chance as Gato. BTW, I’m a B.Jenet, Gato, and Dong Hwan player.

Garou is probably SNK’s best fighter ever. Too bad nobody played it when it was good, and I’m BARELY beginning to play it (as well as SS2). The 3s of SNK, in a good or bad way.

SSTenka is even better than Garou.

And yeah, Kevin rapes Hokutomaru in every way.

…seriously.

#1 isn’t going to happen unless arcade game manufacturers slash the prices on arcade games, which isn’t going to happen because there aren’t enough arcades left for them to recoup development costs if they do. Arcades will simply never be able to compete with consoles on costs, because of the expense of purchasing and maintaining hardware that recieves constant use and abuse. Not to mention things like rent and air conditioning. The same goes for #2 - console releases make a hell of a lot more money than the arcade releases, which is a big deal for companies like Sega and Namco that put a ton of money into their games because they can recoup all the costs by releasing tweaked console ports. Getting out of the red on a Tekken, Soul Calibur, or Virtua Fighter game probably wouldn’t be possible without console ports.

See I admit that I NEVER knew Kevin was Top Teir, I thought Ninja Boy was up there - honestly I think the game is kinda balanced now that I sit here and REALLY think about it…
