Norm was no nonsense back in the day with chun. I was at a team tourney were norm took out watson, shirts, valle, and afro legends by him self. It was an AE tourney, but norm played ST chun. It was the SBO that the wolf brothers won but just barely. norm was a 1 man team. Norm’s partner was an OG geif player, but I think he was so OG that he never played anything after hyper edition. He had no idea about the new characters and moves so he was pretty much free to everyone. that was a sight to see. 1 man wrecking team. mad props.
Doesn’t “Beef Bowl” main Ryu? I always remember him having a really good Ryu.
It wasn’t my first tourney against them but maybe one of the first.
I’m glad people are enjoying the videos. I may I have another video somewhere of a World’s Finest tournament from around the same time (94-95). If I can find it, I will definitely upload it but it might have been erased. =/
upload it. I might have been there as a spectator like at 14 years old or so. lol
Kuroppi :Do you have any footage HF or SSF2 tourney with Tomo Ohira playing?
No. I never met Tomo.
I don’t have much stuff. The only other old stuff I might have is the World’s Finest tournament that I mentioned and the Alpha 3 , which is already all over YouTube.
I do have some brief video from Japan the week before SBO 2003 but I don’t remember how much stuff is on there. I’ll have to check the video again to see if it’s worth uploading. But I do remember that I filmed some cool stuff from Otochun showing us Chun’s stored super while jumping all over the screen. :karate:
what you meant to say was “hey kuroppi, you have the holy grail of street fighter?”
Well actually other sources have informed me that Beef Bowl’s real name is in fact; “Norm” who lived in so cal and was known to have the best Chun Li on ggpo back in 08 (much better than tech monkey and Janus, he may have played ryu also, but was known for his deadly chun li)
that being said Norm aka Beef Bowl from So Cali is most likely the O.G. Norm Ho.
On a side note Kurropi, I gotta say with all sincerity that your ST Honda was a head of its time especially since the game was brand new and there was no you tube, etc.
Its funny you can hear Jeff in the background say “I am gonna pick up honda now” and “Honda does big damage” after you beat Watson in your regular tourney match.
I would definetly like it if you can put up the Worlds Finest tourney vid.

Haha yeah thats what i meant to say
Capcom Japan states that X was released sometime in March 1994 (SFII History) and Usenet postings indicate that ST first appeared on these shores in 3/23. Now, there’s the beta version, which debuted no later than 2/16 and was featured on the 3/26 videos for Midwest Championships 1, but AFAIK, no tourneys were held for ST beta.
Consequently, one thing I’ve grown more curious is: was this the first ever ST tourney in the world? Were there any known tourneys before this one? There are no internet records of earlier tourneys. The Gamest Cup for X was on 5/3/94 so this UCLA tourney on 5/1/94 is not only the oldest US ST tourney I’m aware of, but possibly the oldest ST tourney ever. If that’s true, then this footage is invaluable.
In the footage, it’s pretty clear there was quite a bit of knowledge and experience from past SF2s with tight links, aerial overheads, solid fireball zoning, tight Zangief traps, and attempts to incorporate the new moves. On the other hand, there seems to be some unfamiliarity with the depths of the mechanics with no knowledge of stored moves, an inconsistent reversal rate, no comboing into supers or follow-ups afterward, and trouble with claw’s flipkick juggling. From the tourney, we can see Free Select speed used (mostly on 3 but sometimes 2), a head-to-head cabinet setup, plenty of counter picking, the vast majority characters used, acceptance of ticking, and a good deal of hype. Given a month to try out a new game, that seems about right.
It’s interesting to compare the play styles from the Gamest Cup to this UCLA tourney, both held around the same amount of time and featuring some of the best historical players from each side of the Pacific.
Uh, are you explaining this to the Euro folks here or something? If I wrote that the game was first released in 3/23 and there’s no such thing as a 23rd month and you can’t have a tourney for a game that hasn’t come out yet, then it’s difficult to see how anyone would accidentally assume these dates are in little-endian form instead of middle-endian as intended.
Wow, that’s great info Ganelon. It’s been so long I didn’t realize how early this tournament was in the ST era. I thought it took place later on but I’m positive my dates are correct.
I think he means X Mania took place before Gamest Cup. Anyway, by today’s internet/communication standards, by 94 Japan was not only in another continent, but another planet. Whatever took place first, it does not matter.
Edit: why isn’t the footage on the front page yet? More nominations, please!
Xmania started in 2000 (X-MANIA History), over 6 years after release, so that doesn’t make sense either. And it’s not entirely the case that Japan was unknown to the US at the time. TZW combo vids were already being marveled at, folks like Jesse Howard had already stayed in Japan, and we already had the Gamest tiers on hand for NC (with the then-inconceivable notion that Hawk was top tier).
The importance of being first isn’t a big deal, simply the pleasure of knowing that you’re viewing the earliest competitive play available. How many times have you seen Neil Armstrong uttering his famous words upon becoming the 1st man on the moon? And how often does that compare to seeing Buzz Aldrin become 2nd on the moon? It’s all about compiling and understanding the history of the game. If anyone knows of earlier tourneys, I’d be happy to hear. But as is, it’s amazing Kuroppi uncovered the most historical piece of ST footage that we could’ve hoped for.
Ha, I bet in those days, a month seemed like forever. After all, only 5 months before ST’s debut, NC was released.
I fucked up. It should read “I think he means Gamest Cup took place before the UCLA tournament.”
If he meant that, then that’s inaccurate as well since every source for the Gamest X nationals mentions it taking place on “1994???” (i.e. 5/3/94). 5/1 is of course earlier than 5/3.
The nomination system is disabled and has been for many months now. So hitting that button sends a message to a bottomless pit. That being said, this should be on the front page soon, along with the XSPR interview.
Very cool. All this time and I never knew that was Norm. I do remember Beef’s Chun Li now that you and DANGR have mentioned it but I also do remember Ryu so I wonder if some other OGs might have been playing on his account. And the stuff about him playing AE, wow. I thought he was long retired since the old ST days. But Eggo (George Ngo) came out of “retirement” for HDR for a while too. Good stuff!
Anyone know where I can watch the SBO2003 ST Top 4? I remember someone posted it before but I can’t find it anymore (the non-French commentary one).

The original uploads of the SBO2003 ST DVD are gone from YouTube. I don’t see them uploaded anywhere else. All you’ll find now are the ones with French commentary over them. DandyJ has a few matches uploaded, including the famous Daigo serial killer face match, but not the full thing.
