I’ll post the rest later…I’m too into LOST right now.
That yellow Hawk seemed to either read very well his enemies or use a particular cr.short tick which option selects typhoon or rising Hawk. Do you know who he is? He has nailed Cammy like 3-4 times in a row, with either of those moves. Around 5:30 in the video.
That Blanka (H) was solid. I noticed the Ryu (Kurahashi) was not reacting to his jump-ins, even when at the perfect distance for shoryuken. I firmly believe Ryu can only win the match-up if he is on his toes, punishing the jump-ins accordingly so that Blanka either guesses right and hits him during the recovery of a move or gets anti-aired/swept/overhead/hadouken. If his execution or reaction time is not right, Blanka will be all over him and his only hope of victory will be Blanka guessing wrong lots of times in a row and landing on/walking into too many hadoukens. Good Blankas can deal with cr.strong.
That would be Hiroyan playing gold N.Hawk. And it’s more than one option select actually. You do a safe jump with a dragon punch on the end. If your opponent blocks then you get a jumping attack that you tick off of. If they do a dragon punch (or some other reversal attack) then your dragon punch comes out after you land from the safe jump. Whoever has the better dragon punch hitboxes wins. So if Hawk tries that against O.Ken his dragon punch will lose.
The other one is tick into negative edge throw then immediately do a jab dragon punch with Hawk. If your opponent fails to reverse then you get a throw and your dragon punch never comes out. If they reverse, then you immediately get a dragon punch, and your dragon punch will come out a few frames later than your opponent’s which is very good. Here’s the full sequence:
Safe jump -> dragon punch -> hit confirm low jab -> negative edge command throw -> dragon punch -> reset
That’s the loop against Cammy, and a few other characters, and it’s probably the hardest thing to do in ST. Probably less than ten players can consistently execute it worldwide.
Starting at 5:10 he does the loop (minus the first dragon punch it seems) four times in a row. The first two times his opponent blocks the safe jump, reverses the throw, and gets hit with a dragon punch. The next two times his opponent fails to reverse at any point so he gets thrown. The last time Hiroyan fails a safe jump and eats a reversal then unfortunately gets hit with a ToD. Next round at 5:44 he starts the same sequence.
Notice how Nakamura tries to reverse as often as possible. The reason is that he’s hoping that Hiroyan messes up the throw loop so he can escape it. The second round Nakamura reverses against a failed safe jump and gets a ToD and the round out of it. Last round Nakamura reverses himself out of the corner though he ends up losing the round. The loop is so hard for Hawk to perform that the odds are that if you keep reversing you’ll be able to escape it eventually.

So, I went hunting on youtube for high level matches(SBO/EVO) of Claw vs Ryu(or Shoto). Everyone I have found is Ryu getting getting raped. Can anyone point me to some vids on how to properly play this match for Ryu? I’m sure there has to be some examples out there.
Have you looked here?
http://streetfighterdojo.com/superturbo/ryu/ryumatches.html#Vega
Matchup Difficulty Level: 7/10
I believe it’s still vega’s favor but you should be able to get some ideas of how to control the match better…
From what I see, don’t be too aggressive. If you can get on a lead, start turtling.
Only go for countering the dive when you have ample time to prepare for it.
Yes, I know who you’re trying to beat. He’s a counter picker. Get his ass lol.

I’m sure that there are more. ShootingD often turtles into his own corner to avoid wall dives. Claw dizzies really easily so you can try to wallop him and play aggressively.
Thanks guys! This helps a lot. Very difficult match for RYU its seems, but not impossible. The wall drive cross-up shenanigans can drive you mad.
As VF4 has said, wall dives are exactly the reason why D tried to get his back against the wall, that is, why he corners himself as soon as he can. Actually, any time Claw can not be hit before reaching the wall or right after it, it is a good idea to do a wall dive. It makes a lot of difference how he does it, but correctly employing the move puts Ryu, wherever he is, in a situation he has to guess and it is in Claw’s favor, as not only a wall dive does more damage than any of Ryu moves but a deep fierce or strong SRK, but the timing is important in order to counter it. Say, Claw wants to do a wall dive that hits Ryu with the tip of his claw. If Ryu anticipates it and performs a rush punch followed by a SRK in order to beat it, he can get Izuna dropped if he delays the move or does it too early. If he fires a hadouken, the move can lose cleanly or trade in Claw’s favor (he will do around 50% more). So it is often a good idea to block or jump back tatsu, both actions which give Ryu problems if Claw decides to dive in a different way and end with a knock down. Furthermore, if Ryu gets knocked down in the middle of the stage, the round can end right there.
The match is in Claw’s favor and you will just have to accept that, but there are many things Ryu can do to try and steal rounds and matches. It is not an auto-loss. First of all, the wall dive is quite fast and hard to time a counter, but it is also hard for Claw to perfectly steer it and then time the attacks. Ryu can not default to a given action when wall dived. Particularly:
[]standing strong or fierce can beat some dives that aim to punish a hadouken but miss a standing character.
[]Claw has to choose if he will hit a crouching or a jumping character.
[]If Ryu is cornered, jumping back fierce, roundhouse or strong can trade or beat dives which aim to Izuna drop him.
[]well timed hadoukens will hit almost every dive that whiffs, which Claw often employs to bait a SRK or standing fierce.
[]If Claw is on top of Ryu, early standing or crouching fierce can beat a dive.
[]jumping strong is good when Ryu are below Claw; fierce or roundhouse is good if he is below.
There is a distance where forward tatsu will switch sides with him. This is a very old trick that is hard to deal with and can cause a punishing move to hit “the wrong way,” leaving the enemy wide open for a throw or simple combo. Mixing up with short tatsu, which alone may punish some random pokes such as cr.strong, is good when used sparingly, as should forward and fierce tatsus. They put Ryu in the middle of the screen, which is very risky.
Don’t try a combo into shoryuken against Claw: they often whiff against him as he thin in terms of hitboxes from the front. Also, cr.str into cr.forward is rather useless but for baiting pokes: the moves Ryu usually cancels off cr.forward from that distance whiff against Claw. Always try to combo into short tatsu or red hadouken, as Claw gets a free cr.strong after point blank cr.strong or forward into blue hadouken.
It is impossible to safe jump Claw after a sweep. Don’t try. In one of those videos, Gotoh uses an air tatsu right before the apex of the jump, which moves him forward and crosses Vega as he gets up, but is hard to time right. If you screw it up, you will eat a flip kick x2, so either one masters the trick or uses it as a desperation tactic. After a complete (non sweep) knockdown, the time for a safe jump if when Vega reaches the peak after first bouncing off the ground. If he tries a flip kick, try to use cr.strong xx shakunetsu (red) hadouken or short tatsu Or a rush punch combo if you are feeling bold. Another thing that helps is crossing him up with roundhouse, then using usual mix-ups such as throw, cr.forward xx hadouken, cr.strong and throw, etc… By using often tatsu or roundhouse, Vega may try to crouch so as to avoid a mistimed tatsu and eat a full cross-up combo, getting dizzied and then killed. By the way, the best combo to use is he gets dizzied are jumping roundhouse, fierce xx red hadouken. It is easy enough and grants you another knockdown.
Some don’ts:
[]trying to punish far rolling crystal flash with a crouching kick. It will either beat the move of trade in Claw’s favor.
[]try to punish far rolling crystal flash with fierce or strong SRK: they have vulnerable hit boxes on the body and lose cleanly.
[]throw a jab hadouken from mid range. Claw can jump and combo a cr.strong on reaction.
[]do a point blank SRK against a Claw who’s good with reversals: fli kicks beat them.

turtle but not stand up then crouch or throw some random standing strongs or jabs: Claw can react to a hadouken from the other side of the screen and hit Ryu’s arms with sky high claw or wall dives.
I don’t know what else to say, I am an amateur ST player and Claw gives me a lot of trouble, also. But learning safe jumps and imitating D’s strategy of constantly cornering yourself has helped a lot.
Edit: as for wall dive loops, a friend has given me a tip, which I have adapted and it seems to help a bit. Try to identify which side Vega is before you wake up. Try a reversal and end the joystick motion in towards direction, and only use negative edge with the 3 punch buttons. If he does not cross up and you successfully obtain the move, he gets knocked down, else, towards become backwards and you block the move.
Regarding safe jumping Claw, I believe it’s possible, but it requires earlier timing as he gets up faster than most characters (except perhaps Sagat and Dhalsim). If you use the same timing that you’d use to safe jump a waking up Ryu, odds are you would get flip kicked if the opponent has reversal execution.
The whole deal with variable wake up timings makes safe jumps inherently harder as a general tactic, but of course still very useful.
It is pretty possible, but as I have said, not after a sweep. He wakes up too fast for Ryu to recover from the move, jump and land before Claw gets back up, performs the flip kicks and have them reach the active frames. Ryu and Ken need a full knockdown so as to safe jump him, other than unsoftened throw, or knee bash. Either a special attack, Ryu’s jumping strong punch while Claw is in the air or a knockdown special attack.
Ryu can not safe jump Claw, Sagat, Blanka and Chun Li after a sweep. Blanka has problems with immediate jump + fierce from max range sweep, tough, as it beats his specials.
As for wake-up times, I believe they do not vary, unless the character reaches an object or a wall (e.g., it is cornered).

That’s a really sick T. Hawk I saw on GGPO.
I ran into a solid Hawk as well recently on GGPO. Garjal or something was his name
