Speaking of both Daigo and Nuki, NH2 posted a long series of Nuki’s Chun against a very good Ryu, whom he believes to be Sasori.* They go back and forth, and it is really impressive how well they play. You can identify countless rounds one takes from the other where the loser makes no real mistakes: it is just the other player using his character to its best potential.

Shoryu in kanji is exactly equivalent to shenglong in Chinese in this case where both are comprised of the characters ??. It basically means “Rising Dragon” (like Allen Snider’s dp name in SFEX). The alternate characters you listed are homonyms, as well as close synonyms, but they’re not the official characters used by Capcom Japan.
As for why this move was translated using the Chinese pronunciation, I agree that it appears someone in Capcom USA who knew Chinese deliberately decided to romanize the move in pinyin instead of romaji for some odd reason. It’s strange considering the only case where pinyin romanizations are used (instead of romaji) to translate words in the entirety of Street Fighter II is in Chun Li’s name (Fei Long’s name sort of fits but it’s officially written in katakana).
Speaking of Fei Long’s name, that brings up 2 additional (and admittedly pedantic) oddities. First, the announcer pronounces “Long” in a “short o” American manner (instead of going by the “long o” kana or Chinese pronunciations) even though he pronounces “Chun” based on “long u” kana (instead of going by “short u” English or the shorter Chinese variant). Fei Long’s name itself is also inconsistent since it’s based off the pinyin romanization used in mainland China rather than the Hong Kong government’s Cantonese romanization system used by the vast majority of Hong Kong residents.
