Hold on, the spacing that he’s talking about? It can happen, but it’s very difficult to land without getting Gief to commit to the lariat option instead of choosing to do something else. Like crouching EX Green Hand, for instance.
The Bison/Gief match up requires a lot more calculation than “just do a move.” Which is what bothered me about the comment in the first place. It helps to not be scared, but we all know that Devil’s Reverse fucking sucks, and that Gief can turtle just as well as Bison can in that fight. The better question is “what’s more likely to happen?” I’ve seen lariat stuffing DR in more matches than not, and then I’ve just seen it barely used at all. It’s just not a black and white situation.

Corrosive, I don’t believe we have ever played, but I don’t doubt that you may be the better player. That doesn’t give you carte blance to post like a fuckhead though, which you are apparently S-tier at.

I find it really bothersome to have folks just run in like they’ve got some messianic answer to the Gief/Bison match up when a lot of top players have shown that sometimes you just outright lose this match on a bad guess.
And why is that? If he’s never played him then he has no real idea of how good he is. You should never underestimate another player. It’s best to consider an unknown opponent to at least be as good as you are.
yeah in order for DR to snuff lariat the lariat must already be out, so bison will beat it on reaction. but against good geifs they are not going to just spam lariats. that only works on idiots who don’t know how to play. a good geif will be very aware of spacing and distance and only deploy lariat when you are right on top of him where DR will either be snuffed mid frame or not deploy and get hit anyway. and since lariat snuffs HS also air game pretty much sucks. all bison really have against geif is FA’s, kicks and knee press. it’s a pretty gay match up lets just be honest about that.

all i want for christmas is a dive punch/kick, saaayyy… Alpha-style skull crusher performed by df. lp anytime in midair, ala Rufus. i wouldn’t care if it did just 1 damage, as long as i have a better option against guile’s zoning compared to now. i’m not saying this would or wouldn’t be overpowered, but… a man can wish, lol.
Bison vs Gief sucks a lot and it’s hard to not make mistakes when there’s a lot of coin tossing going around.
DR’s not gonna hit Gief more than once if they are good, hell, or not at all if they know how much Bison can do in the match up. DR can be beat by air headbutt on reaction and nobody’s gonna lariat a DR if they’re smart.
yeah your right about head but. it’s safe, snuffs both DR and HS on reaction which completely shuts down bison’s air game against Geif. you might be able to sneak an EX HS in there somewhere up close but that’s risky and that’s about it.
that leaves pokes, SK’s and FA’s. not much of a tool chest and not much mixup variety. very predictable. but hey that’s what high level SF4 is about anyway. capcom wants to make like everything punishable on reaction.
jeez you guys are vicious. if youre in a situation where gief is lariating and you are already on your way down of course you can hit him, but that situation isn’t going to arise in any high level play. Gief can shut down your air game with headbutt and then with a few pokes you’re dizzied and basically dead, so playing HS/DR mindgames to try and bait a lariat is just not going to work. i dont know exactly what parabellum meant, but DR does ‘beat’ lariat in the situation when lariat is activated and you’re basically on the way down with a DR. I never got the impression he was trying to offer ‘messianic’ wisdom. i think thats the end of the story.
this all stemmed from the discussion on nj. strong, so hopefully someone can throw in their two cents. from what i understand my good man Master Bigode suggested that nj. strong does indeed have a legitimate use. I often nj. on Gief’s wakeup and I thought it was pretty reliable but that late lariat of doom always trades with other moves and then you eat a green hand (trades into x move is one of the worst things about this game imo by adding more incentive for defense and punishes offense). however, if you use nj. strong ( requiring some fairly strict spacing) you do hit and can even combo off of it.
so in the end I think this move should stay the same even if it has use against only one character in a fairly reliable way. this matchup ain’t fun and trading sucks so thanks for the tip. definitely going to try this out.
Whats nj? Knee junks? The move where he does knee press but thrusts his junks at the opponent and instant kills them because of his overwhelming psycho power? Thats my favorite move too but the notation for it is kj
DR isn’t THAT bad vs Gief, but still hella easy to punish (I’ve played some Giefs that will FA that shit nicely). Mixed in with proper spacing and HS, and it is still a valuable tool in the fight. Still easy to punish though, if you fuck up.

Look, if you want to stop the pissing contest, then asking me this is pretty stupid. Mr Rep Groove himself has tried talking about Bison in the past, and he’s been mistaken and it’s irritating when folks seem to think he has the clout to talk about this character he only dabbles in.
I’ve posted in this thread before, try looking through the history. As for how you feel about me talking about parabellum. How about you look up what he has to say about Bison and chalk up what was well informed and what just doesn’t hold any water. I can tell you right now, you’re gonna find at least a few instances where shit doesn’t make sense.
