Anyone here seen Brick? I had it recommended to me by a few friends and I didn’t like it at all. It was annoying and had me falling asleep.
I liked it. It wasn’t great, but it had a nice River’s Edge/Twin Peaks vibe.
I’m a big fan of Joseph Gordon Levitt so that helped too.
While I did find some of the scenes in Brick to be, well, nonsensical, I thought it was very refreshing to see something ORIGINAL for once. A noir film set in high school. It took me 20 minutes to realize that the whole movie was going to be like this. I also agree with Mr. Gorath that Gordon-Levittis talented. Manic is another interesting film.
I dont think Wes Craven is heralded for his proficiency as much as his originality, particularly with Last House on the Left. It was pretty groundbreaking horror at the time.
And I lost faith in Live Free or Die Hard, which I could not wait for, once they announced it would be cut for a PG-13 rating. Yeah. PG-13 John McClane. Thats exactly what I want to see. False.
Just to expand on my last post that spoke of originality (or lack thereof), I had a discussion with my friends when we went to see Spiderman 3 opening weekend. The trailers were as follows:
Shrek 3
Pirate of the Carribean 3
Jason Bourne 3
Rush Hour 3
These were the trailers when we went to see Spiderman 3
Hollywood: orig ideas plz kthnx
Everyone knows or has heard of the lack of creative and original material coming out of Hollywood these days, but I figured I would throw out this particular example in order to back my disgust. Anyone else catch this/Have other examples/Have any comments?
Thank God, there’s no way Vinnie could have played that roll.
And  at Fox having them pull the pics (on the link)
I saw The Good Sheperd and i thought it was a good movie. Not great but good. I really enjoyed Damons characterization and of course Alec Baldwin always acts great. Didnt really felt that long (160 mins).
Just saw Casino Royale… and I liked it. I figured there would be no happy ending, of course.
I like how the movie shows Bond as a cold killer (IIRC that’s basically what he is), but shows emotion for someone, only to bottle it up again in the end.
i thought brick was actually REALLY good…anyway this weekend i saw a movie called…
glengarry glenross…
do yourself a favor and fucking see this…priceless shit in this movie…it has al pacino, jack lemmon, alec baldwin, ed harris, and kevin spacey…amazing performances all around…

Roberth
Just finished up participating in Fangoria’s Weekend of Horrors convention in Los Angeles. Here’s some inside scoop:
Eli Roth:
Someone from the audience jokingly asked if he was going to make ‘Thanksgiving’ (Grindhouse Faux Trailer) into a movie. He responded seriously that he had spoke with Edgar Wright (shaun of the dead, hot fuzz writer/director) about it. So far nothing is in process, but there is a small possibility that it might go somewhere later. Don’t hold your breath for it though. He says Thanksgiving was an idea he had since he was a young teenager. He showed a clip of hostel 2. It didn’t show much. Just had Bijou Philips running scared and screaming - teaser. The lighting and production was very nice.
Masters of Horror:
Will have season 3. They don’t have a list of the directors involved in the season yet. In the future, they will have popular modern directors like Eli Roth, Neil Marshall (?), etc.
The Descent 2
Neil Marshall (the descent director) had a panel promoting his new movie Domsday. Audience asked about Descent sequel. He says there will be one, but he won’t be a part of it. He’ll only oversee it to make sure that they “don’t fuck it up.” (in his own words).
Resident Evil : Extinction
They showed a trailer for it along with a never before seen clip. It has fast zombies. To be honest, I didn’t expect much from this movie - thinking it would just be another hollywood mainstream cash flick, but the scenes that they showed were actually quite entertaining. They showed a scene in which zombies attack people with guns, and in summary, the death gags were quite nice. A few nice head shots, some knife sticking in the head, and a big’o hole in the head gag - nice a bloody. The move might not be half bad after all - at least for the effects. The plot will probably be another story. The director’s intention was to make a scary movie in the day light (desert); they were tired of using the darkness of the night to create fright.
Uwe Boll : Postal
Boll had a panel about him, but didn’t not personally appear. Instead, two of the actors from his new movie postal appeared. It was funny, no one was really asking any questions, so there was a lot of awkward silence. They also were the only panel to have technical difficulties in showing their clips and trailers - almost like they were being set up. It was fun to watch. Even the actors were talking about Boll’s movie like they were shit. haha. Apparently Uwe is pronounced “oo - vah” not “u-wee” or “u-weh.” Postal is supposed to be a comedy - they showed a clip of two plane hijackers (middle eastern) arguing about how many virgins they will get after crashing the plane into the twin towers. They call up Binladen to confirm the number of virgins. It’s supposed to be funny and controversial. The actors on the panel admitted that Boll has a shitty form of German humor (as their experience with him as a director).
The Third Mother
Screenwriter of Dario Argento’s new movie had panel discussing the movie and showed a clip. It was intense and horrifying. I can’t wait to see it.
Max Brooks (and other Zombies)
writer of the Zombie Survival Guide (book) was there with a panel with other zombie movie production crew members. Discussing new movies and overall zombie topics such as trends, style, and vision. One topic was about each member’s view of how zombies came to be. Each had a reason such as virus, infection, etc. George Romero never has and never will explain how his zombies came to be.
Day of the Dead (remake)
Saw a clip of the new movie. It has fast zombies like Dawn of the Dead. I love the original, but I gotta say the clip was pretty weak. Showed some people running through the city, avoiding zombies. Pretty weak. I’m hoping it was just a weak clip (a lot of finger crossing).
Heather Langenkamp:
She played Nancy from the Nightmare on Elm Street series. She’s nothing but a washed up whinny little bitch. End of story.
Manhunt 2:
Playstation 2 game made by Rockstar. Plays just like the first one. The representative there didn’t let anyone else play. Goddamn hogging the game. And on top of that, she was playing it all wrong. Also available for wii.
That’s all I remember for now.
I didn’t sit in on the Rob Zombie or Shawnee Smith panels.
nightmare. c’mon! i don’t even like horror and i know that…
Just picked up:
Art of the Devil 1
Art of the Devil 2
The Vengeance Trilogy
Devil May Cry anime
Doh !, major typo. I’m still exhausted from the 3 day shinanagan.
Thanks for the correction
hung out on the film set for a movie my friend wrote all day saturday and did a little extras work. Saturday night I went to the dvd shelf and popped in The Wire season 1 and proceeded to watch all 13 episodes…so I didn’t watch any movies this weekend
Holy shit a movie fanatic thread, why was I not informed?
I’m currently training to be a screenplay writer/director, probably watched over 1000 movies in the last 6 months, written an absolutely obscene amount of material, read 5 books on screenplays, and am about to start deconstructing successful scripts to learn how to apply some lessons first-hand.
So, pretty much every second I’m not at work or school I’m doing something related to movies :o
Or browsing a dumb forum.
Anyway, anyone else trying to break into the industry as well? In it? etc. Stories, gogogo.
Yeah I’ve been working various positions in the industry for almost 4 years now, since I graduated. Currently working at a mid-major studio. Not an easy biz to tackle…little money involved combined with high cost of living in L.A. There are perks, though.
Exactly.
K-bomb, have to see it
post up here what you think after you have seen it…i cant believe i had not heard about this movie untill like 2 weeks ago…

haha Glengary Glenross is awesome. Watching Jack Lemmon whine about the good leads is so convincing. I saw the movie years ago, it really is kind of a hidden gem. My buddy is on top of all that stuff so I just get my recommendations from him. I am ridiculously jealous of the dude that went to the horror convention. That is awesome, sucks about Descent 2, the first one should have been a stand alone horror flick, since its the scariest movie I’ve seen in years, and I hate the thought of a series tainting the original. That new Dario Argento flick looked real creepy you said? Now THAT is something to get excited about.
