i just saw the infernal affairs trilogy cost me like 20 bucks at fye for the boxset, I liked it a whole lot more than the departed

i know at least pg can help me out with this one, what are some of the films that were based off of kurosawa films? like mag 7 was based off seven samurai. i was thinking about this while i was watching yojimbo this weekend.

A Fistfull of Dollars is based off Yojimbo, as is that 90s Bruce Willis movie Last Man Standing. I thought For A Few Dollars More was based on Sanjuro but Im not quite sure. Broad strokes of The Hidden Fortress were used by George Lucas for Star Wars (A knight leading a misplaced princess through enemy territory; the story being seen through the eyes of two peasants(droids) ). Also Rogr Corman did Battle Beyond the Stars which is 7 Samurai in space and Martin Ritt (Elon grad) remake Rashomon as The Outrage

Alot of the other stuff was based on classic literature, usually shakespeare (throne of blood, Ran), dosteyevsky(the idiot, ikiru, red beard), and even gorky (the lower depths)

Star Trek 11 stuff

February 26, 2007 - IGN Movies has learned from studio sources which actors may play the Big Three in Paramount’s Star Trek XI. By the “Big Three,” we mean, of course, Captain James T. Kirk, Mr. Spock and Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy.

Confirming rumors that have been making the rounds for some months now, IGN has learned that Oscar winner Matt Damon is indeed in talks with Paramount about playing the role of Jim Kirk, previously immortalized onscreen by Emmy winner William Shatner.

Damon brings star power and an acting pedigree to the role that should convince audiences that this is a serious reboot of the beloved franchise.

For the part of Kirk’s Vulcan first officer Mr. Spock, IGN has been told that none other than Oscar winner Adrien Brody (King Kong, The Pianist) is in talks with Paramount to play the role. If cast, Brody would succeed Leonard Nimoy in a role that forever marked Nimoy’s career. But with a Best Actor award already under his belt and an eclectic mix of films on his resume, Brody wouldn’t have as much to lose by taking on the iconic role as Nimoy had.

IGN has also been told that Oscar nominee Gary Sinise – currently seen on the small screen in CSI: NY – is in talks for the role of Dr. McCoy, the ornery and politically incorrect ship’s physician aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise. McCoy’s prickly relationship with Spock was the basis of much of the humor and humanity of the original 1960s series. The late DeForrest Kelley played “Bones” on TV.

Golden Globe and Emmy winner Sinise is no stranger to films about space flight, having previously appeared in Apollo 13 and Mission to Mars.

Those are the three actors that our studio insider advised us were the closest to being cast, with Damon’s talks said to be further along than the rest. We have also heard of an actor being eyed for the role of Enterprise helmsman Lt. Sulu: Daniel Dae Kim (“Jin Kwon” on Lost). Sulu was played on the classic TV series by George Takei, who can now be seen on Heroes. We should stress, however, that Kim’s possible casting is at a far earlier stage than that of the aforementioned three.

Lost, of course, was created and is executive produced by J.J. Abrams, who has just signed on to direct and produce Star Trek XI.

Sources also advised IGN that Scottish thesp James McAvoy may indeed be in the mix to play chief engineer Montgomery “Scotty” Scott in the film.

Neither Damon’s reps at Endeavor nor Brody and Sinise’s respective reps at CAA had responded to our inquiries for comment at time of publish.

yes, i watched it on saturday while recovering from my wisdom teeth extractions. it was very good. mitchum is one creepy ass mother fucker, but too happy of an ending for the feel of the film, imo…

i’ve heard the hidden fortress/sw comparisson before. i knew that ran and throne of blood were based off shakspeare, but i didn’t know about the others. doesn’t miller’s crossing have alot in common with yojimbo? i haven’t had a chance to watch it yet…

edit: holy shit, i just noticed the “play now” feature has been added to netflix…i knew they were planning this, but i didn’t know it went live…

Last movies I saw:

Lady Vengence**- Same director/ trilogy with Oldboy… nuff said (great movie).

Three Colors: Blue, White**, and Red (for the second time). A trilogy by one of the best directors I’ve seen - Krzysztof Kieslowski. The colors Blue, white, and Red represent the colors of the french flag which stand for liberty, equality, and justice respectively (but it’s not political). Highly reccomend these movies (mainly blue and red with Julliet Binoche and Irene Jacob).

Since I Can’t find the DVD Thread at the moment (and the link on the front page doesn’t work)

I’m gonna just post some things here:

my most recent DVD purchases are:

Fullmetal Alchemist the Movie: Conqueror of Shamballa
and
Tenacious D: In the Pick of Destiny.

POD is good, I think it was pretty much under the radar…very funny, quite sponaneous, and the music was quite good (of course, most rock musicals are good, so I’m thinking this flick will have a longer life as a rental than it ever did in theaters).

Conqueror of Shamballa is a great end to the FMA Series, I just have a problem with one thing:

when the movie starts, it kicks up the ‘camera angle’ option on my DVD Player (no matter what player I put it in), and it won’t go away.

any idea what I can do to deal with it?

i’m subscribed to both the movie fanatic and dvd thread, cuz they disappear regularly.

watched stranger than fiction last night. i enjoyed it greatly. the ending was pretty predictable, but i loved it.
