The SRK Movie Fanatic Thread (REVIEWS, QUESTIONS, RANTS, STARS...ETC.) EVERYTHING!

i <3 snopes

I dunno what you’re talking about here… regardless, it’s one of the best films ever made. I dunno what the fuck your point is.

I’m a HUGE fan of horror movies, especially early 80’s slashers.

One of my all time favorite slashers is The Burning. It has a typical plot - A group of kids at camp play a prank on the caretaker. The prank involves fire, and the caretaker ends up getting burned VERY badly, and then takes his revenge. A typical horror movie plot. It’s a bloody slasher, so if you’re a fan of gore, you’d love it.

P. Gorath would probably know about this movie. The raft scene is one of the best death sequences ever

I saw it last night. It’s really good and hyper bloody and violent. It takes place in Spain during war time and the movie doesn’t flinch showing you the horrors of war despite it’s fairy tale setting. The villain in the movie, the Captain of the military is one evil sadistic bastard. There’s fairies, a faun, a mandragora AKA mandrake and things of that nature only not exactly kid friendly in it’s depiction so to speak. It’s like the reviewers say - a fairy tale story for adults. The pacing is bit slow for my tastles but still I give it 5 out of 5 stars. It’s in spanish and is subtitled. Go see it!

yeah, i really want to see it, i just have to find a theater playing it here in san diego…

Ok, so I haven’t watched any good movies in a while(well… a few)…i’m thinking of catching up on older movies that I haven’t seen yet. Any recommendations? (obviously you don’t know what movies i’ve seen, but throw out em suggestions anyway.)

So far i’ve got on the list:

1.) Little Miss Sunshine
2.) Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Things i’ve already seen:

1.) Scoop
2.) The Departed
3.) The Prestige
4.) Borat.

And you guys can go way back… i’m a fan of the old school b&w movies too.

ummm…go to the official dvd thread and check the dvd haves and wants of me and pg on our dvdaf pages(link on the first page)…thats a good place to start…

i highly recommend ā€œspring, summer, winter, fall and springā€

Ok I saw Rushmore for the second time and was even more impressed this time around. I also like the Coen Bros stuff, natch. Will check out this thread some more.

But yeah, Rushmore… Bill Murray’s first ā€œindie-flick rebirthā€ film? Definitely the best I’ve seen (I definitely DO NOT like Lost in Translation, although it was kind of the motivation for me to plan a trip to Japan. to be like the complete opposite of how Bill Murray and Scarlet were in that film)

watch the tennenbaums if you like murray…

watch the life aquatic first, then tenenbaums

Tenenbaums is good, another one I’d like to see again. I mostly just remember that Gene Hackman rofl scene. ā€œI’m dyingā€

Ok, anybody fancy tiering the Coen Bros films?

God: The Big Lebowski
Top: Miller’s Crossing, Fargo
Upper-Middle: O Brother Where Art Thou?, The Man Who Wasnt There, Barton Fink
Lower-Middle: Intolerable Cruelty, The Ladykillers, Raising Arizona
Bottom: Blood Simple

Not that Blood Simple is bad, but you can tell it’s like their first film. Don’t think I’ve forgotten any there… and no, I havent seen Hudsucker Proxy yet, need to check that out.

ok, how is raising arizona in the same tier as intolerable cruelty?!? i mean, ask anyone here, i fucking HATE nicky cage, but arizona is fucking brilliant. and blood simple at the bottom? i dunno man…your tiers need some work…

also, they didn’t write bad santa, they produced it.

Intolerable Cruelty wasnt that great, but it had one of the most incredible slapstick gags in it that I have ever seen.

Intolerable Cruelty

Spoiler

Wheezy Joe’s death

All I remember about Raising Arizona was that showdown with the biker dude. I prolly need to see it again, one of the films I’m least familiar with.

I’ve removed Bad Santa, my bad. Blood Simple stays where it is because to me it’s like a rough-draft of Fargo. Although hey, there is that bit that inspired the Radiohead music video… it’s still a great film.

Still… you don’t have any complains about the God/Top tiers now that Bad Santa is gone? You can’t really go wrong with Leb, Millers and Fargo.

i agree, although i wouldn’t differentiate them on the coen brothers scale. all three are very different and very close to perfect examples of the coen brother’s genius.

blood simple >>> all other coen bros movies with the possible exception of miller’s crossing

if i haven’t stated this enough, christopher guest is a fucking genius. i haven’t seen consideration yet, but i watched mighty wind for like the 100th time last night and i laugh harder each time. i mean, none of the guest/levy movies compare to their first, guffman, but show and wind are still both fucking hilarious, the latter being better. i don’t put tap in with them simply because it was directed by rob reiner, but if it was to be tiered with them it would be ultimate god tier.

I havent seen Blood Simple in years and years and years, so I may be forgetting some stuff about it, but I’ll tell you why I put it bottom tier and why I think it doesnt match up to their later stuff: it doesnt have a comic edge to it.

Bottom line is I find the Coen Bros funny, and in a way that isnt really done anywhere else. They’ve got a dark humour (I’ve also got the book of short stories by Ethan Coen, called ā€˜Gates of Eden’, check it out if you can) and I can remember Blood Simple being dark (both metaphorically and literally) but not being funny.

I guess you like Miller’s Crossing because that’s the next closest to their straight film. Although of course it is sort of funny-odd, what with the insane unlimited-ammo tommy gun scene, and also the incredibly subtle homosexual love-triangle aspect…

But Lebowski obviously is my favourite. I laughed the first time I saw it in the cinema, and I still laugh now watching it drunk (white russians of course). It’s the one out of all their films that has real ā€œCultā€ status (there’s actually a Lebowski-festival that goes on every year, check out the vid of it up at Youtube )

EDIT: whew gotta be careful with the spoilers inthis thread eh. Don’t think any of the above would classify though.

perhaps you were too young at the time to get the humour, because Blood Simple is really, really funny (the cul de sac running gag alone is golden). You should watch it again. There is even a ā€œdirector’s cutā€ now that adds soem more humour too
