I’ll definitely see it because I love The Spirit and I’m interested in seeing what Frank Miller is up to. Whatever it is, it should at least be worth seeing, but my confidence has not been inspired yet.

Oh, THANK YOU, Frank Miller. Phew.

For a while, I was very worried that Miller was taking it in an overly serious direction. I’m not too sure about the first clip, which is a little too Looney Tunes-esque, but the second clip hits right on the mark.

First clip was removed from Youtube. :frowning:

So, is there any sort of reading I should do to hype me up for this movie?

DC’s Spirit collections are very nice, but sort of heavy on the wallet. Your best bet is probably The Best of The Spirit, which serves as a decent sampler for The Spirit comics. The post-WWII stuff is marvelous, especially when you take into account how far ahead of its time it was. Eisner really believed in the medium as a vehicle for strong stories, and was constantly trying out new techniques that are taken for granted by today’s readers.

Haha. Nice. I liked that YouTube clip.

The Best of the Spirit TRADE, BABY is a good buy and a great read. It’s just fine to introduce new readers. The hardcovers are hardcore, though. I would hope that DC is smart and releases more affordable paperback editions of those to coincide with the movie. (But I highly doubt DC will be smart when it comes to their TRADES, BABY.)

The new Spirit series is also probably pretty good. Haven’t read it yet (because DC only released an overpriced hardcover for a handful of issues - those things are worse than Marvel’s Premiere Editions, I swear), but the first few issues are by COOKE, so I can’t imagine it being anything worse than well above average. And I think Evanier and Aragones are currently working on it, so that’s good, too.

I bet the Batman/The Spirit one-shot crossover sucks, though. Jeph Loeb wrote that. He’s the only guy who could possibly make COOKE look bad.

Well, $10 is easily within my price range. I’ll probably get around to it this weekend, thanks.

I trust Jeph Loeb to write The Spirit like I trust a chimpanzee to drive my car, which is not very much. Not very much at all.

Just about all the advance word I’ve seen is that this movie is really, really bad.

So there’s that.

I’m not surprised. I really don’t understand why they went with the stylized sin city look for this. It could have been a great film noir without all the frills.

My sentiments exactly.

A friend of mine wants to see it so I will probably go, not on Christmas day or anything. I’m not looking forward to it. Old Man Frank Miller scares me…

There’s been talk of Frank Miller making a Buck Rogers movie. I haven’t seen Buck Rogers since I was about 5 years old so I don’t have strong opinions on that either way.

By all accounts, it’s the writing, not the visual style, that is the film’s biggest weakness.

I am going to make a prediction: if you go to this movie expecting anything remotely like Will Eisner’s The Spirit, you’re in for a disappointment. If you go into it expecting the over-the-top battles of 300, the hyper-real noir of Sin City, and the satire of Dark Knight (in other words, a mishmash of Frank Miller’s favorite stuff), you’ll probably be a lot better off.

Personally, and I may have said this before, I’m prepared to see this movie purely out of good will towards Frank Miller. He’s done a lot for comics, so seeing his debut film seems like the least people could do.

Yeah. I don’t care how this movie turns out. Frank Miller’s got lifetime diplomatic immunity as far as I’m concerned.

Wow, I just saw this and it was not what I expected at all.

yeah this movie wasnt that great i seen it a few hours ago

it had its good parts
but it wasnt worth $10.50
