The Sonic the hedgehog thread V.7 2017 its been generations since the last good sonic game

The second half of Sonic Boom’s first season has started…loved both of the last 2 episodes especially the last one. Specifically because of the whole Knux dream sequence.

Yo guys. So i was given some advice a while back on this, but never followed up with actually reading lol.

So I’m gonna finally dive into the Sonic comics. I just ordered this hard cover Sonic Genesis comic to get some entry. But there’s a lot of verses in the whole Sonic comics. And from what I see is the “Sonic The Hedgehog” series is the ongoing shit. While Sonic Universe is side character focused right?

So is the “Sonic The Hedgehog” series one giant contiuous story. Or is it in very distinct arcs? I guess like how Final Fantasy is in that you know each game is it’s own thing? Because I was thinking of getting the Knuckles series next since it’s done/cancelled before i dive into the actual ongoing shit

I hope the Sonic Boom rebounds from the negative reception of the Wii U game. The TV show is genuinely funny and great. I feel it would be a bigger success if it had a better time slot.

Archie Sonic is hilariously OP(compared to his game form)

Infinite Speed, and he’s powerful enough to destroy a universe

I’ve been slacking on the show. But I feel that if they let the show ride out a bit, and use that time to actually polish the game. That Boom could’ve been good(the game). because the show really is nice, and it’s exactly what you need as a solid 2 short ep style series

.

Sonic the Hedgehog is the main book and is like one continuous thing, but its been rebooted so many times you can pretty much start at Sonic:Genesis to current. In fact if you want you can just do the MM and Sonic Crossover and start from there since it reboots after it aswell.

Sonic the Hedgehog is the main story and mostly centers around Sonic unless the story calls for it. Sonic Universe are the events that take place outside of the main story and usually either fly parallel or intersect with the main book and usually center around the side characters. Genesis is an ok place to start and the Worlds Collide crossover with Megaman is even better. Genesis was the first soft reboot and ended up erasing some characters existences and Worlds Collide was a much harder reboot that pretty much wiped out everything that happened before it. Most of the characters that are still in remember what happened in the past timeline but it’s rarely ever referenced. You actually find out the influences for Sally’s forearm plasma blades from the events that took place between Genesis and Worlds Collide but its inconsequential.

Pretty much when World’s Collide happens just about every mainline Sonic game before Unleashed (they’re adapting Unleashed right now) becomes canon and you have to assume that the stuff that happens in those games is what transpired in the new timeline. I think all of the characters have shown back up after World’s Collide save for Blaze and Silver I think…Supposedly I believe Ian Flynn is going to try to bring those 2 back in at some point which is going to be interesting considering that 2006 both happened and didn’t.

Edit:

On the topic of the games now…I’m curious to know what exactly is Sega going to do with the franchise since supposedly they’re going to be focusing more on mobile and PC now. Supposedly PSO2 is still coming out over in the west at some point as far as we know and they just announced Yakuza 5 is coming over…is that gonna be it for console games from them now? I’ll be quite the sad panda…but they kinda brought it on themselves at this point. Maybe Nintendo can buy some stake in the IP like they did Fatal Frame and have a bit more control of it to keep it afloat? Probably not…

Nintendo needs to get in on that Yakuza IP so I can get all the games without having to wait 10 years after release >=o

@Sonichuman Ahh OK i see. Because I after getting the Knuckles comics I was gonna get the Worlds Collide, but I wasn’t sure if Collide was in teh continuity, or one of those “it really did happen, but it can be read as a standalone” situations.

Hmm and i seen that early Sonic comics were more or less just short stories. And that at a certain point it actually did become story focused.

But I’m guessing due to reboots, you could say the comics are giant arcs, and then reboots. So there’s always an entry point but you’re getting a different story?

Damn western comics be too difficult lol. I may swing by my comic shop after work, because I believe they do have the worlds collide shit in there.

But yeah since it seems the series has a bunch of reboots. It seems I can just find a plot that interests me and read from there, and then just skip around like that. Unless the reboots actually do matter in the overall continuity

The only reboot that matters is Worlds Collide because like I said…everything that happens prior to that doesn’t really matter and isn’t really referenced.

Ahh I see. So it’s safe for me to start at Worlds Collide, and then just read on from everything that happens after that?

Also how is the tone of the comics? It is typical fun sonic stuff, or does at time does it get dark/serious and what not?

A mix. Ian Flynn who’s the current writer (and also is writing the Megaman comics) has been trying to clean the comic free of one of the previous writer’s stuff (main reason behind the reboots). Generally it’s going to be Sonic and co either dealing with whatever scheme Eggman is doing or with a new threat that maybe be lesser or more important than Eggman. Characters can and have died in the series and things can get serious but Ian’s been doing a fairly good job of not going over the top in the dramatic imo.

Ahh ok sounds good. Welp. If i don’t do anything after work i’ll slide by the comic shop to see if they got Worlds Collide in there still. Thanks for all the info!

You can just buy the whole thing in a trade, or if you want just go on comixology and grab the entire thing from there.

Yeah that’s what I’m gonna do. Whenever I purchase comics I try to get in collected volumes. I don’t like getting “issues” I just know they got a small section where i always see some archie comics. I just haven’t been in there in a few months.

Hey so I’m having a bit of dilemma as I do wanna also read the pre-reboot sonic comics.

Now they have these Sonic Legacy reprints which are like 16 issue per book, but they are Black&White the most recent one came out in Dec. but it was digital only and it seems unsure on if this reprint series is gonna conintue.

And then there’s Sonic Archives which is 4 issues per book, and it’s in color. I heavily prefer color. But I was thinking of getting the 3 legacy books which would put me around issue 50-something, and then continue on from Archives. But I hate not having the a consistent collection of books.

So which move should i make. I’m leaning towards the 3 legacies, and then continuing off archives as it would save me money and space. but the inconsistency in books in terms of how it’d look on a shelf and etc is gonna kill me. as well as the black n white. But i may just bite the bullet and go ahead

Archives if you want the colors.

Legacies if you just wanna catch up really bad.

Go with the legacy books if you really want to catch up. Being in black and white should be the least of your concern. If it’s anything like Marvel’s essentials line the books will be softcover with newsprint pages. No color and cheap material is how they can collect so many issues for cheap.

It sucks there isn’t an omnibus for the series.

Hmm I do wanna catch up. ahh like i said the 3 legacies will put me up to like the 50s and i heard thats around when shit starts to get series for the comics in general.

And yeah I know black n white shouldn’t be an issue but it’d be so weird seeing Sonic like that. Shiiiiit. I gotta choose man. On archies store, a legacy book and an archive are the same price. And i’ve seen reviews for the legacy it seems that the stuff is good quality. I’m trying to see. Because here’s a coupon for 30% off the entire order. So i could get alot of Archive volumes and knock off a chunk of the price if i do that.

EDIT: So I was able to sample a few pages of a legacy comic. Yeah going to go with archives. I can’t take it in black n white

Interesting that a Gaf thread popped up talking about the dealing of Ken Penders and the comics

All I can tell you Drelly is that the comics before Ian will have their ups and downs.

Also Sonic Boom is the worst selling Sonic in history

To the surprise of no one really…You really did bring that on yourselves Sega by not caring.
