I picked up the 3DS version of Sonic Generations recently. Putting some time into and I love this version of the game as I did with the PC version. PC game felt me with wanting more and that’s what the 3DS version provides
since it features different stages than the console version. It was great playing through a proper Casino Night (fuck the pinball DLC), Emerald Coast and Mushroom Hill again. I found it odd that the modern Sonic levels are just the 2D transmissions done as the full stages without it ever going into 3D. Don’t mind it too much. As much as I’m loving this version of the game I have a couple of gripes with it.
Classic Sonic having the homing attack. No, just no. Classic Sonic has no business having this move and designing his stages around it is crap. I want the feel of Genesis games when playing classic Sonic. Leave the homing attack to the modern version.
Boss battle against Metal Sonic. I like that this boss is an actual race in this version instead of a conventional boss fight with a race element like the console version. What’s disappointing is that the race happens on Casino Night zone instead of the bad future of Stardust Speedway. The race uses the music of Stardust making it worse.
Radical Highway being the Sonic Adventure 2 stage for the game. Radical Highway was Shadow’s stage for that game and Sonic was never there canonically. Wish they had chosen Metal Harbor instead.
Not correcting the console version’s mistake and adding a stage from Sonic CD.
Give Radical Highway a pass. It was either that or Final Rush. The top three Sonic/Shadow stages from SA2 are City Escape/Radical Highway/Final Rush in terms of notability. MAYBE Crazy Gadget as well, but I don’t think they wanted to kill people. Metal Harbor was wack.
Metal Harbor was dope, lot of cool routes, time shave tricks, lots of ways to do that stage, and stylishly to. Rocket was icing on the cake. Good music to.
Personaly i think Final Rush is over rated. The majority of the stage is riding rails and the rails where cool, but as stage flavor, not the focus of a stage. they compliment stages well but as a focus they are boring. Final Rush would have been extra boring in one of the newer games cuz switching rails is balls easy, and there is no Rail Balance mechanic.
No mention of Pyramid Cave? That stage could have been pretty unique to the lineup that they picked for Generations. Otherwise my vote would have went to Green Forest. This is if I had to choose anything other than City Escape as an SA2 rep for Sonic.
I’m really, really sad we didn’t get a new Flying Battery Zone. That would have been infinitely cooler than sky sanctuary, and you know that soundtrack remix would have been godlike.
Imagine blasting through the clouds, jumping between HUNDREDS of eggman’s carriers thousands of miles above the sky.
Sonic Generations demanded my attention for months just from the content it came with. Hell, I still play it quite often actually. I really can’t believe, of all games, they didn’t release DLC for that game. Imagine what they could do with some of those boss battles’ like the ultimate weapon boss at the end of SA2B, or fucking OIL OCEAN ZONE. That was a huge missed opportunity to make an incredibly expansive Sonic game. Really hope another Generations gets made some day.
My record for modern Sonic on Green Hill Zone is only 3 seconds away from the world’s best on YouTube…shit is so frustrating.
I was listening to Pumpkin Hill the other day. I hope that in future games if they still do character specific stages that they give knuckles another soundtrack like that
