The Sonic the hedgehog thread V.3-2012 Sonic 4: Episode 2

The original is still in the game for Modern Sonic, but I personally love this rendetion.

I was digging it until the auto-tune:xeye:

Oh man, that auto-tune DOES kind of blow it.

It’s OK, but they went a little overboard with the pop feel.

The demo is pretty hot… this game finally has the sense of speed I was looking for in Sonic 1…

Sonic 2 is one of the only sonic game I really fell in love with… Oil Ocean Zone is dat piff…

It’s really the Sonic game I can claim to have beaten other than the Sonic Advance games…

I hope Chemical Plant makes a comeback…

This should be a definite buy… I’m sure they can’t fuck up between here and November… this game is like a love letter to old fans, sort of like third strike online…

EDIT: That autotune bullshit blew it…

Obvious troll is obvious.

no, no trolling…I’m dead ass serious. I love Sonic Unleashed.

…I think Zoolander is talking about your ’ Sonic 4 is misunderstood, Sonic 4 plays like Sonic 2 with a homing attack, etc’ comment more than anything.

I’m serious face about that too…

Sonic 4 is not as “loose” control wise as the genesis versions of 2d Sonic, but it has different physics and mechanics.

its a slower game cause Sonic takes a little bit longer to gain momentum than in other games, he’s kind of like a truck in that game, starts out kinda slow but once he gets running, he’s just as fast. Those slow few seconds that he takes to “speed up” his run animation can easily be fixed with a Sonic ball though…and the homing attack is cool, maybe cause I played so much unleashed, and I was ok with the homing attack, but you dont even have to use it if you dont want to, but it helps to stay fast when your on the move…the game does well of setting up “chains” for your homing attack to take some cool short cuts. it really ends up being the premiere way to kill enemies over jumping on thier heads…its rather rewarding IMO. But once you adjust, it really does play like old Sonic.it was a really cool love letter to the old games…its just a slightly different game.

I’m going to disagree with a few things on this but I’m tired at the moment and won’t get into it until probably tomorrow unless somebody else beats me to the punch and pretty much says everything that’s running through my mind at the moment.

Something interesting…Someone hacked the demo and put Classic Sonic in the Modern Stage and Modern Sonic in the Classic Stage

Classic in Modern:

Modern in Classic:

Edit:

lols

People are really going crazy off of this super unfinished demo. Sonic fans, man.

I like it so far, but this is coming from a guy who hasnt touched sonic since adventure battle 2

Hmm Classic Sonic seems slow, I guess that’s because his speed is to work with his stages…

This is fucking awesome. It’d be sweet if this could be done to game as an update of sorts.

Before I get into any of this I’m going to state again that my opinion on Sonic 4 is that it’s actually not bad…it’s maybe in the grand scheme of games it’s actually a slightly above average game. However the fact that this was supposed to be a return to sonic’s classic form thus even bothering to call this game ‘Sonic 4’ it just has issues that need to be addressed that I cannot just simply gloss over without at least criticizing it and hoping that Sega fixes whenever Episode 2 hits. It doesn’t come close to the 1-3K line in terms of music, some of it’s design, and the big umbrella that is ‘Sonic Physics’.

For 2D gameplay homing attack is not needed if the physics of the engine are all in place correctly. Homing attack was made for 3D to allow Sonic to be able to attack enemies on the go quickly and effieciently without bumbling in 3d space to land on them in a not so graceful manner (See the first video I posted earlier of Classic in Modern and you’ll se what I mean). Sega knew this was going to be an issue starting out during the Genesis days with Sonic 3D blast, thus where the homing attack originated. It’s not need in the 2D games because you don’t have to worry about depth and only have to worry about moving left and right to land on enemies. The chain of enemies to reach new heights could have been done in the older games without the need for the homing attack so long as the enemies were set at the right distance for the jumps because of how the physics work. When Sonic homing attacks in 4 it stops him dead in the air and he has set bounce height regardless of what angle he comes from or how high. Then there’s the issue with accidentally killing yourself when you’re trying to do an edge jump and sonic decides he wants to homing attack into the abyss.

There’s plenty more things wrong with Sonic 4 in comparison to the genesis originals that I refuse to believe you think that 4 actually plays anywhere near like them. There’s a ton of videos pointing out the things wrong with the physics alone.

Sonichuman, it’s hard to distinguish you from other members without an avatar ^_^;

I know I know…Sonic’s little breakdance will have to do for now.

It’s time to escape the city tonight and partaaaaay!

That is too pimp yo~

Yea the auto tune fucks of the really nice beat they had going. It ruins that song.

Break dancing Sonic is coo but holy shit it has nothing on your Unkarted AV. that thing is hilarious.

i get what you say, and I cant disagree with you…I am in no way the person that you should be debating with on the issue, cause I do agree that Sonic’s road lately has been bumpy to say the least…, but I feel like that the lack of “cannon” the Sonic team has when it makes games does not make Sonic 4 unenjoyable… i do feel like the homing attack is better suited for the 3d games, as you know I’m familiar with the 3d games, and like them, and it could have not been in this game, if the jump mechanics had been made to mirror the originals… but I adjusted to it, and had fun with it. its not that flawed… I never had the “homing attack into the abyss” problem you described with edge jumps.

and when I say “Sonic 4 plays like Sonic 2” I’m not talking in exacts…cause obviously the game engines are not similar…what I mean to say is once you adjust to Sonic 4…the experience is similar…

I feel like I’m playing a new Sonic that was heavily influenced by the originals…cause i still feel like Sonic 4 is not a bad game

but I am not saying “Sonic 2 = Sonic 4” cause

“Sonic 2 > Sonic 4” of course .

Yea me too I tried unleashed first stage n I was like ehh its okay but never bothered to keep going… so they need to bring back SA2 already, I can’t say it enough!
