Sonic CD HD (to no surprise) is listed on XBL with screen shots and a video trailer with something everyone’s already seen before (I think). Right now, I’m in the mood for ranting about my first impressions of this game that I own on the PC.
Sonic CD was one of those games I never really dug in to. I never had a Sega CD, so it wouldn’t be until I got my hands on the PC version over a decade ago. Later, I also emulated it. I remember running through it once each time, not really understanding what I had to do as far as make a good future so I never really took my time to dig deep through the game. It wasn’t until recently that I searched a playthrough on youtube and it started to make tons of sense. I also couldn’t help but notice the level design, as there was only one level in the entire game that has a pitfall.
So, I couldn’t help but fire up the old disc on my laptop with Sonic CD fix and even though it works, it doesn’t work as good as I’d like it to. In 256 colors, there was no way to see the title bars in the windows and there was no way to configure my USB pad because it kept freezing from every attempt. The only option was the default settings on the computer which was the keyboard. (Arrows and spacebar - nothing too hard, but it did present an ever so slight challenge.)
Otherwise, the game itself ran almost okay (the anime cutscenes wouldn’t show) but it was 100% playable. Last time I played this, I just wanted to run Sonic through the stages. This time, I really wanted to do some exploring and from the first level, all I really have to say is WOW. You get a sense that these levels are vertically huge just from the getgo and it doesn’t let you down later on. The platforming in this game, or just the first few acts reminds me of other fun platformers I’ve played as a kid that were not Sonic 1 through Knuckles. It was really the biggest sense of fun I’ve received from a Sonic game in a long time. It felt… pure. It’s nice to know that once you realize what you have to do, the game encourages exploring and it’s just on the same level you get with the speed.
The thing I’ve always appreciated about CD was that it looked like Sonic 1 and not like Sonic 2/3. Those little things such as Sonic’s original slightly faded, clay-like color, his walk animation which was smoother somehow in CD compared to Sonic 1, the rough edges of the foreground and simplistic background, and I realized that the sound of his classic Sonic’s jump in Generations came from this game. Sonic is fast in this game with 3 different running animations to differentiate his speed. Sonic CD feels like a game where Sonic Team probably did everything right. For these big, little reasons, I worry I just may like this game more than Sonic 3 & Knuckles… or at least parts of it.
So yeah, I didn’t play through it all because I’d just rather wait for the HD version to do more exploring and more running through stages and earning the freedom to roam through them. In the end, I’m kind of glad that Sonic CD for me was a game that I kind of left as an unfinished journey, whereas Sega seemed to hold on to it like an ace up their sleeve with it’s limited ports.
I really hope Sega releases this game some time during the first half of December since it’s due date went from “4th quarter” to “holiday season” to “December” and December’s right around the corner. I’m SO hype for this game.
