The Sonic the hedgehog thread V.3-2012 Sonic 4: Episode 2

In the 1up review, he mainly shits on modern sonic conceptually. Comparing him to “poochie” from the simpsons. I never played colors. What does he have besides a homing dash?

Man, fuck the reviewers. Most of the reviewers don’t even know how to review and I can even say that about some of the positive reviewers lol. Honestly, reviewers have gotten so bad, we need a site that reviews the reviewer’s reviews.

Modern Sonic:
-spin jumps
-has a homing attack
-boost meter to increase his speed and doubles as an attack
-has a wall jump (can be used on certain surfaces)
-a ground slam attack that’s used to break stuff beneath him.
-he can shove objects with extreme force to use as a projectile to hit enemies
-has a side-step he can use in 3D
-has a slide to crouch beneath narrow places (this also counts as an attack… at least when he’s boosting, I think)
-drifts (can be used to build boost meter)
-does tricks to build meter

There are also abilities you can purchase. Also, there are other abilities that come over time that we’re all too familiar with if you’ve played the Adventure series.

dayyyyyum this game is great! I only played like 3 stages but from what I’ve seen so far but I love these level designs and speeds get crazy. Right now I’m focusing on that Classic Sonic, man this was a good pickup I might be playing this shit all day.

He controlled really well to me. They made him easier to control than even in Colors and increased his jump arc slightly as well.

Ive pretty much raped the game in under a day…100 percent Green hill and Chemical Plant…gonna do sky sancuary and one of the dreamcast stages tomorrow

got 18 songs so far…

Speed Highway is so cool for both classic and modern. I noticed some slowdown in modern’s level.

I like collecting songs.

except for the fact that 06 is absolutely nothing like sonic adventure 1/2… esp 2. The freedom allowed in 2 was ridiculous and made the game amazing and provided unlimited play time because of all the unique stuff u could do with the freedom you had. The new sonic games end up just being holding down forward for long periods of time. I haven’t played generations yet though.

‘Freedom’ in Sonic Adventure 2? It’s easily the most linear 3D Sonic game ever released. I love the game myself, but I don’t love of because of any kind of freedom you had amidst playing it. Maybe your definition of linear is different from mine. The game is fun but it’s incredibly linear. You just cycle through speed, shooting and hunting stages repeatedly without much else in between.

There are no hubs or Adventure Fields, every optional power up is located within the stages.

You could argue that Sonic 06 is more of an ‘adventure’ game than the actual Sonic Adventure 2 is. Same with Sonic Unleashed (which was called Sonic World Adventure in Japan anyway). Adventure 2 took the entire ‘adventure’ aspect out of it and just shoehorned in a multiplayer mode to take its place.

Sonic 06 for all intents and purposes is Sonic Adventure 3.

I just got home not too long ago and just read that link Tizoc posted earlier. I had absolutely no plans to buy Sonic CD but now I’m teetering on the fence. I’ll probably end up biting.

I’m probably going to be playing this game all night. Picked this up and Shadows of the Damned finally.

‘Can’t stick around have to keep moving on. Guess what lies ahead only one way to find out!’

Edit:

If you’re talking about freedom in the action stages…all of them have that. SA2 is still relatively linear in it’s approach.

That was probably an original intention, but it just is so meh that it feels nothing like a sequel to such great games. Glitches aside, there are far too many problems and things that separate it from the other games. Sonic adventure 2/1 had their fair share of glitches as well, but atleast you had to find the damn things instead of them finding you.

Sonic Generations is absolutely the greatest Sonic game since Sonic Adventure 2.
Everything about this game is fantastic. I consider this game better than Mario Galaxy.

I really wasn’t expecting the game to be this good…

I’m not sure what a Tool Assisted Speedrun of Final Rush using countless glitches and exploits has anything to do with my point that Sonic Adventure 2 is more linear than Sonic 06 and Sonic Unleashed.

I’m not talking about alternate pathways in levels. That’s not what being non-linear means. I’m talking about the core structure of the game and how you progress through it. In Adventure 2, you go level to level to level a la the Genesis titles. Not Adventure Field, to level, to Adventure Field, to mission, to Adventure Field to level, etc etc.

Sonic ‘Adventure’ 2 has none of that outside of the Chao Garden. Sonic 06 does. Sonic Unleashed does. They follow the Adventure formula better than Adventure 2 ever did. That’s why I say Sonic 06 is basically Sonic Adventure 3 in everything but name.

Just look at it! The entire game’s structure is basically a carbon copy of the original Adventure’s!

Oh no most of us understand that 06 is one of if not the shittiest game in the series. Just because it is doesn’t mean that it’s automatically excused from it being an adventure title. The layout, the story telling, and the hub…all adventure.

If it’s not labeled Sonic Adventure 3 than it isn’t Sonic Adventure 3.

People don’t say Sonic Advance 1, 2 & 3 is Sonic 4, 5 & 6.
The way you move in Sonic The Hedgehog and how everything is handled is completely different than a Sonic Adventure title.

It’s like also calling Mario Galaxy, Mario 64 2 or something.

In that sense, you are definitely correct, but I was talking about the actual game play of the levels. Don’t get me wrong. Sonic 06 had the potential to be a good game as a seperate thing, but it falls into the category of new sonic games where the levels don’t allow you as many options as 1/2, and that is honestly why I cannot say its sonic adventure 3. Maybe you didn’t play levels in SA 1/2 religiously like me but after doing so, you realize how insane the mechanics for the game are made to allow you to do ridiculous things. As a marvel 3 player, you will probably understand me making this comparison. If they were to remove a lot of the gameplay mechanics that defined the insanity of marvel 3, you would end up with a different game. It might still be a good game or a game with good potential (06), and it might still have similar mechanics enough to be called marvel 4, but in itself it would not feel like marvel 4… it would feel more like a game like SF4. I just dislike how in the newer sonic 3d games, a lot of your freedom is removed, and you are constantly forced to have no options but simply run forward and mash out SPEED UP SPEED UP SPEED UP. There are times where I try to jump off the ledge in hopes of finding something neat but only to find an invisible wall.

06 has pretty amazing music tho

The level design in Sonic Adventure 2 is non-linear, sure, but I feel like you aren’t giving Sonic 06 and Sonic Unleashed enough credit. Sonic 06’s levels for Sonic most certainly did have branching pathways and such that did give you a lot of the ‘freedom’ that you praise the Adventure games for. The same with Sonic Unleashed.

Just because something isn’t named it doesnt mean that it isn’t what it is. Mario Galaxy has a slightly similiar layout in the fact that it has a hubworld but the way you go about accomplishing your goals is far more linear than Mario 64. 06 was pretty much doing the same thing that SA did…just doing it far worse. Were there hub worlds to run around in in both games? Were there npc’s to interact with even though most of them did NOTHING for the game? Did you collect powerup items for the characters in both games? TBH I don’t even know why this point is even being contested that 06 is or isn’t basically SA3. Sure they can can come out with a game years from now and dub it SA3 and that would be SA3 but all Sega really did was take a syringe and pull out the formula and ideas from SA and try to inject it into 06.

I get what you’re saying. I’m not gna lie. There were a lot of parts about Sonic 06 that I really liked such as Aquatic Base with the gigantic metal balls u had to control yourself on and in that, there were shortcuts on the side if you were feeling really brave. They definitely tried to incorporate some freedom in there, but a lot of it was the kind that made me kinda facepalm like shadow riding in a warthog like he be thinkin he masterchief. I can see 06 with the possibility of being a good game (I didnt play unleashed much,) but to call 06 a sequel would just be kind of silly because of how different the mechanics actually feel. Just with the huge difference between the spindashes, 06 makes the levels feel completely different from a SA game.
There were some cool things involving things that made it feel like SA though… some come to mind:
Aquatic Base Giant Metal Spheres
Silver Water hopping with good timing
I liked the idea of the leaping thing with sonic where you could chuck something and leap 500000 feet, but it felt really unstable in a bad way.

Modern Speedhighway = face blown backwards. Love the fact that Sonic looked at the camera and gave a thumbs up at the beginning of the stage as if to give me a hint of what was to come ahead of time.

Also was not expecting ‘proper’ Espio.
