The Sonic the hedgehog thread V.3-2012 Sonic 4: Episode 2

Simply put, the older Sonics are true classics (by older, I mean the Genesis titles 1 to S&K). There really aren’t any other Sonic games after those that stand up to their overall quality. Since that era has left and Sonic jumped into 3D, the biggest issue has generally been the level of gameplay offered that players could immerse themselves in.

[details=Spoiler]You can always go back to the Genesis titles and control Sonic without worry about things such as falling through various stages, not seeing where you’re going because the camera is either trapped or is simply unable to move or having to play characters that weren’t Sonic/nothing like Sonic and playing them just to in the end reach Super Sonic instead of running him through the previous stages (essentially making him an additional character). Even though Sonic 4 offered that classic aspect, it didn’t make the game any less worse than it already was. There were so many important aspects in the classics that should have been in 4 and most of us simply want him to feel like he ran, jumped, and spin dashed like he did before. Too much to ask for?

Sega was still making a few good 2D titles such as Sonic Advance 2 (probably not a classic in my eyes, but enjoyable nonetheless). Even though it seems like recently Sega has done something wih Sonic in 3D that’s extremely right (speed stages in Sonic Unleashed/gameplay in Sonic Colors), they’re finally able to do something more right than wrong and can move forward with the right.

Sonic Generations is really looking more than just a take you back in time Sonic because we threw old and new Sonics back into your favorite classic stages (sorta like Sonic 4’s execution stage-wise). It seems to successfully offer a lot more of something new that’s enjoyablewhile reminding players of something old without the old being all those post-Genesis era annoyances.

The thing I didn’t like the most about Sonic’s gameplay in the successful Adventure series was that he felt artificially sped up - like he couldn’t go the fastest he could without hitting 500 of those speed bumpers in a row. It just felt like you weren’t controlling Sonic through the environment, rather the environment had immense control over him (all you had to do was keep him straight). Recently, I tried the Unleashed demo and the way Sonic moves presently through stages is… ridiculously satisfying. The man responsible for this deserves my second daughter. In fact, he should have everyone’s second daughter in this thread. It was like playing Spider-Man 2 for the PS2 where you can FINALLY make Spider-Man webswing for real (unfortunately, no one seemed to properly capitalize on this monumental achievement in future titles, wtf). I feel like Sonic had to run through years and years of bullshit after S&K to finally find a place where he is meant to be in 3D, and thus my hope for a great Sonic game has finally been restored.

Sega said Sonic 4 was the game we were all waiting for, but honestly… I’d rather just leave it at Sonic & Knuckles. 16 years was nothing to boast about, especially seeing that it just made them appear as if they needed another 16 to do it right. Why look back, Sega? You’ve finally been able to make Sonic move forward the way he should. If there is going to be a true Sonic 4, I hope it takes after Generations (if this game is as good as it truly seems).[/details]

I’m really hoping that those stages play out better now than they did back then. I enjoyed Speed Highway back in the day. I almost bought SA1 on XBL but the demo just reminded me why I’m done with the game. Though, if there’s anything about SA1 that was classic… mmm, the OST!

Oh, and if there was anything to be nit picky about in Sonic Generations, I did play the demo (only classic Sonic) and it just seemed like his jump was a bit weird, but in the end, I think it’ll be fine.)

Good job FFH i haven’t played any of the newer sonics except quick glances and hearing about the controls. Might have to jump atleast on sonic colors for my 3ds traveling.

I’m on Amazon.com right now looking into buying Colors LOL (I don’t own a Wii but my sister does). I watched a walkthrough of the entire game. I thought the storyline was kinda cheesy, though it looks really nice. Since it takes place in a theme park, it makes me miss some of the darker looking stage themes you’d get from a Sonic game, but I have faith that this one’s satisfying to play.

The only other 3D Sonic game I’d recommend would be Adventure 2. There are quite a few enjoyable things in that game outside of playing Sonic/Shadow that burned pleasant memories for me (like the Chao Garden ^____________________________^ - though I wish I had the game on gamecube since their Chao Garden was more comprehensive.)

Hi, my name is Zoolander and I have a problem…I think Sonic and the Secret Rings is decent.

Well it sure as heck is better than The Black Knight.

If it was viewed as anything beyond decent, then you’d have a serious problem. You are free to enjoy what you like as the problem will fully heal on it’s own - doctor’s orders.

In the grand scheme of things Secret Rings is in no way shape or form a horrible game. It has loads of flaws with it but if not for this game Sega wouldn’t have been taking the series in some steps in the correct direction. It was also the first Sonic game being done on the Wii so they were still trying to feel out what they could do with the Wiimote. Enjoyed the music in the single player too save for one certain track…actually thinking about it that’s actually my least liked stage in that game. Guitar is awesome though.

'WHO’S GONNA ROCK THE PLACE!? PLACE!? PLACE!?’

I think I actually placed Secret Rings somewhere in the mid tier of Sonic games on my list last time I posted it.

Just letting you know…you’re wrong about not having to worry about falling through stages in the original trilogy. Even my personal fave 3K isn’t completely immune to stuff. Granted a lot of things you may have to go out of your way to stumble over but I’ve had my fair share of accidentally falling through a floor or glitching into a wall that I wasn’t supposed to be able to go through. Watching some of the glitch vids on youtube is a serious eye opener (if not entertaining).

Sooo a PR guy during a Gamespot plays just said that there’s actually going to be some kind of multiplayer in Sonic Generations but it hasn’t been announced. He mentions it between 10:20 - 11:05.

Could be interesting…or it could be minigames. I also wouldn’t reccommend watching too much of that vid otherwise you might find yourself cringing…

Just make it like Sonic Adventure 2 and Genesis-era Sonic’s 2-player mode and you’ll be fine

Oh, I remember you could fall through the ice cap zone one down the very first area where you go sliding down after the first super ring in Sonic 3 (I think it happened more often as Super Sonic, but probably never mattered… I don’t remember it happening to Tails, though). It was seemingly fixed in Sonic 3 + Knuckles. In S&K, you can get pushed into a wall by one of those moving platforms that roll over the floors of electricity in the death egg zone. Sonic 2… cycles through memory OH! There were areas where you could fall through the stage when you went down those narrow vertical paths to reach the lower parts of the level of the metropolis zone (forgot which act, maybe 2?). Also, I recall being trapped in the walls of the Casino Zone by some of the moving platforms and even getting stuck just from running with Super Sonic lol. Sonic 1… I may have encountered something in the Scrap Brain Zone, but I can’t remember. That’s all I can remember based on my experience, but I’ll check out some glitch videos after I type this. Maybe something will refresh my memory lol.

Oh, 3K is my favorite Sonic as well. Flaws included, it was perfect.

3 Was by far the most ambitious 2d sonic but for all it’s changes big and small it didn’t add anything that made you say “the sonic series is so much better with this why didn’t they think of it for 2?”. I think it boils down to music and visuals and with that said 2 is my favorite game ever because it has oil zone.

Any time I finish a game my main complaint is it doesn’t have enough cowb…I mean oil zone:rofl:

Dust hill zone looks really cool.

I know the desert gets cold at night…but goodness :stuck_out_tongue:
I kinda like the idea of changing seasons and weather…adds that feel of 3K. That wood level reminds of of Banjo Kazooie for some reason.

Sky Sanctuary direct feed HD footage

I reeeeally want the soundtrack for this game…

You can’t call yourself a sonic fan if you didn’t cum to that link at least 8 times. I don’t know what’s more shocking that a modern sonic game has as much platforming as a genesis title or that I’m hyped for a sonic team game despite being trolled countless times by them before.

Man i found all my old school sonic the hedgehog comics man those bring back memories i wonder where they left off at…i think i stopped somewhere when Dr Robotnik died and a new eggman came in.

The jump still looks like it doesn’t go high enough but fuck it, that feels so minor at this point. This game actually looks really fun. Got the platforming an shit, the Rush stages, but with more platforming sections in them…it’s like a Platforming come back for Sonic…Like damn.

I was hearing a lot of this and I was thinking the same when I played the Green Hill demo. But seeing it in the Sky Sanctuary vid, I think it really does look normal, especially when the camera is close up enough to him within the first 15 or so secs. The real difference seems to be the sheer size of the platforms in the levels today (which are quite large) which makes Sonic seem overall smaller in his atmosphere.

Aside from that, from playing the demo, his jump seems to come down faster than the old games. But like you said, it’s probably going to be minor. Heck, it might even be a good thing. Why? It keeps the older titles feeling unique.

I wish I was able to play modern Sonic in the demo but I was on vacation. Man… 25 days left until Sonic Generations. There haven’t been any footage on the special stages yet, eh? Just Sonic 3 that shit!

I have one word to describe that Sky Sanctuary vid: Heavenly.

lol, that must’ve been around issue 100 or whereabouts. If anything the series has been great for the past 5 years IMO, the current Writer, Ian Flynn has yet to disappoint.

Question. I own a 360 and want to get Unleashed. Should I just get it on 360 or is the Wii version just that much better? (I have access to a Wii.)

Personally I find Unleashed HD to be a better game than Unleashed Wii. The way how boost is used is used as a whole bar instead of segments where you can do just a continuous burst of speed instead of waiting for one burst before beginning another. Better way to manage the meter as well. There are more day time stages in Unleashed HD where as you have to go through more Werehog on Unleashed Wii. Werehog also controls better on 360 so if I wanted to ‘suffer’ through werehog I’d rather do it on the HD versions.

The only thing that Unleashed Wii arguably does better is in terms of layout. With Unleashed Wii you don’t have to go around the stages searching for the day and night coins to unlock the later levels…you just have to do the levels better and you get more coins accordingly. Then there’s also the hub world. If hub worlds are not your things Unleashed Wii’s is simplified to almost being non existant. You won’t have to search for so and so over here in a big town area…you’ll just move the cursor over to select where that person is to talk to them.
