The Sonic the hedgehog thread V.3-2012 Sonic 4: Episode 2

Fly as in kind of glide and he could do that.

I always ditched tails when playing Sonic 2. I hated taking him to the bonus stages and losing my rings because he couldn’t react as fast as me.

I don’t believe he could.

What is everybody’s opinion on Sonic 4? I hear some mixed feelings about it and I was wondering if it was worth playing.

I really gotta take a break from SRK’ing but lemme answer this before I forget:

I technically can’t fault SA2 for copying 00s pop since Genesis Sonic’s soundtrack was built on 90s pop (some American, some Japanese)… but SA2’s sdtk was still shit to my ears, so whatever. Even SA1’s non-theme music (that didn’t have vocals) sounds better than SA2’s. I don’t get why anyone would like SA2’s music, unless you were 7 or younger and just didn’t know any better-- same reason Transformers gets a pass from me for being a shitty excuse to sell toys-- it’s ‘part of my childhood.’

About the art and overall visuals, I can TLDR my explanation down to “personal preference,” but if you really want to know what I think, read on–
SA2’s engine was optimized to accommodate 60fps, which is great since there’s no reason Sonic shouldn’t be 60 fps, but there’s less lighting and reflections and other special effects as a compromise. All the glow, lens flares and spotlights from stages like those casino levels and the speedway in SA1 are nowhere to be found in SA2. Honestly a lot of the game looks more angular than a lot of SA1’s environments, except for some of the later levels of SA2 (the asteroid stages, the end bosses etc). Some of SA1 looks like shit but the rest has better geometry than SA2.

Also, Naoto Ohshima took off after SA1 and it shows. SA1’s art seems to have a lot in common with NiGHTS and anything else Sonic Team worked on before SA2. SA2 kind of has an industrial look with lots of bright primary colors, instead of colors you’d find in nature. The mechs in SA2 don’t look as good as SA1, Shadow and Rouge look like shit and all of you know it. The whole game looks less cartoon-y than past Sonics which ST tried to rectify in later Sonic games (except for Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic 06). Nonetheless I draw the line between Classic Sonic and Modern Sonic at SA1 and SA2 because of Ohshima’s departure.
I meant that instead of sitting through SA1 for 10 hours to beat the game, in SA2 you had to spend, what, 20+ hours replaying every level to collect every emblem (for a weaker reward than playing a Super Sonic finale stage)?

It depends on what you consider ‘beating the game.’ You’re making it sound like you have to finish the entirety of SA1 in one go, and that strikes me as disingenuous. When I played SA1 I considered the game basically done when I finished Sonic’s story. I quit SA1 and moved to another game, then went back to SA1 a week later to play the other character stages. When I finished like a month later I realized there was another epic battle up ahead which was a little surprising. It’s almost like past Sonics where you beat the game as Sonic first, then completed all the bonus stages to get the real endings… but SA1 was slightly better because you’re not just playing the same repetitive bonus stages over and over for the Super Sonic finale.

In SA2, the end of the story mode was Super Sonic/Shadow, but you replayed the game for that Green Hill remake. I guess you can look at the emblem game as extra replay value, but for completion’s sake, the emblem game was just as mandatory as Big’s fishing. So which is ‘the end of the game’ in SA2-- playing through Light and Dark fo the Super endings, or getting the Green Hill remake (which wasn’t much of a payoff anyway)?

In either case, SA1 was structured better. You say you hated Big’s fishing-- how much more would you have hated it if it was stuck in-between Sonic’s main game? That’s how I feel about Tails/Eggman in SA2. SA2 had a lot of good ideas that I liked over SA1, but overall, SA1 actually gives you the most variety, while keeping the variety in balance and minimizing the monotony. That’s just my impression.

Is there an image that shows the full structure/design of Wing Fortress?

ok, so my nephew just got in from out of town town to spend the 4th weekend with my family and he brought his Wii version of Unleashed for me to play, cause I had never seen it, and he knows how much of a fan I am of the 360 version…

wow…the Wii version of that game is sooo asssss.

none of the town hubs, limited boss fights, graphics are shitty, and the controls are very bad compared to the 360 version…

I cant believe the game sites rated the wii version good and the next gen version so poorly…

I could NOT play that game past the first level…it was painful. definitely while KNOWING the difference and how good the other version is.

I now have new pespective on people that have only played the wii version of Unleashed. yea, that game is bad…

but the next gen versions are so good.

lol I personally liked the PS2/Wii ver. of Unleashed.

really?..I cant get next to it…and I didnt like the control scheme for the nunchuck…

I like Colors nunchuck controls way better…

Flocked Sonic the Hedgehog Action Figure

SDCC 2011 Exclusive - Being sold at the Toys"R"Us booth at San Diego Comic Con and in limited supply at the Toys"R"Us online outlet from Thursday, July 21 - Sunday, July 24. I think it retails for $29.99. Looks pretty sweet, though I wish they had a Classic Sonic or a Super Sonic version. Hope everyone from SRK that wants one can get their hands on it.

At first I was a bit skeptical about this game, but when I saw DAT CITY FUCKING ESCAPE, I was sold… IMO Sega started goin’ downhill a bit after Sonic Adventure 2, (Or after Sonic heroes, I kinda liked that game…) but Sonic Generations might be there big comeback…

This is really the issue here. Imagine being forced to do bigs fishing after having blasted through Speed highway as Sonic.

I’ll respond when I get a chance but I do understand where Taito is coming from.

Also Wii version mostly got higher scores because things were more streamlined in comparison to it’s HD bretheren. I personally thought Unleashed HD was better and felt better gameplay wise but I get what most of the reviewers were saying in pertaining to collecting the medals in the stages to unlock more stages. Then there’s the hub world hate that started since the last generation. I like hub worlds…when they’re done correctly. I didn’t have a problem with Unleashed HD’s besides the camera being an issue every so often and I enjoyed running around SA’s hub world freely.

I thought it was poop. But I only tried the demo, seemed to be enough for me.

Hmm has this been posted yet?

I hate spoilers…that is all…

I wish I didnt read that list of stages

God dammit…I had my response halfway typed up and left the computer up and it suddenly vanished. WTF?

Music is going to be a definite opinion thing between SA and SA2 so I can’t get into too much on that… (I like the music for SA and SA2 pretty much equally since I personally don’t mind guitars wailing in the background when I’m running through a volcano, running through a pyramid base, blasting robots, or taking a stroll around a city.)

My response to your art though is that I felt the texturing job for SA2 was done better than in SA especially on Shadow. Rouge eh…I can give you that but Shadow actually looks nice in the game. I’ve actually taken the time to stare at the character model in the chao gardens along with some of the other character models. The angular look you’re speaking of probably has to do more with the locales than anything since most of the time the stages took place in manmade environments more so than in nature unlike SA1. White Jungleand Green Forest don’t look as angular to me in comparison to the other environments but that’s just me.

I personally didn’t have too much of a problem with the artstyle as coincidentally my least liked style for the sonic series was during the Sonic Heroes/Shadow the Hedgehog period. They looked entirely too plastic to me and I actually put that style at or just slightly below 2006’s models for the characters. That’s going to preferences again though.

To explain my definition of ‘beating the game’, I also have to explain ‘completing the game’. ‘Completing a game’ for me means you’ve pretty much done everything you can get out of the game outside of doing any unnecessary achievement hunting that doesn’t add anything else to the game. You’ve gotten all the weapons, all the endings, visited every stage, etc. ‘Beating the game’ is just basically bare minimum to get to the full end of a game’s story. In the older sonic games beating and completing the game went hand in hand since in order to get the true ending of the game you had to collect emeralds. With SA for me to have considered a game to have been beaten means that all characters’ stories would have to be played to get to the final conclusion. ‘Completing the game’ would consist of getting all the emblems and finishing off anything else that didn’t stop you from reaching the true ending of the game. Thus that’s how my logic is on the manner and that’s why I’m saying Big isn’t at all optional since you MUST play through his story in order to reach the final conclusion of the game. You can play through Sonic’s stages and get through that but that’s not getting to the end of the story. This could also fall under personal preference as well because hey maybe people would prefer just a straight shot of fishing, treasure hunting, shooting for over 10 hours instead of breaking it up. Or maybe that’s the difference in that I’m seeing this as breaking up that stuff with the fast and speedyness of Sonic/Shadow sections versus breaking up the Sonic/Shadow sections with the other stuff? Glass half empty…Glass half full.

Hopefully that clears that up.

That was a pretty defensive and narrow response. Preferences preferences preferences. Oh and preferences. Anyway, you asked me what parts of SA2’s game design or art direction I didn’t like, and I gave an explanation (whether you read it or not). It’s G though.

I didn’t mean it to be that way cause I’m not trying to attack you. The thing I mostly just can’t agree with on is pacing and how you consider Big to be optional since for me that’s like going through DMC 4 with just Nero and then saying Dante was optional or playing Heavy Rain and just going through it wth the first character and saying you were done.

How do people here like Sonic and Sega All-Star Racing? I saw it new at a pharmacy bargain bin for $15 and I’m thinking about it. Big Sega-Head over here, but I was wondering whether the actual racing was worth a damn. I haven’t played a cart racer since MK64, was wondering how it compares.
