I enjoyed Sonic Adventure 2 for the most part but those stupid levels drove me insane with the bad music and the got damn dinging from the Hot/Cold sensor. Fuck me nightmares man.
Anyway I’m a lot like Specs. Incredibly critical of the Sonic series but it used to be so ace and could easily be awesome but it always fucks it up in some way. Ever since it entered 3D it’s never manged a game that was above ok.
I haven’t played Colors yet tho and i did like the day stages of Unleashed for the most part (That games a perfect example of this series always droppin the ball) so i may like Colors if i ever get around to playing it.
If the extra character levels in SA2 were set up like SA1 (pick a character at the main menu and play the story from another perspective) I’d be okay with SA2. Sonic/Shadow was decent and I really like the grading system. The Tails/Eggman stages were literally painful (which is too bad because SA1’s ED209 stages were fun to mess with). The treasure hunting levels were just ehh, not good or bad imo. But alternating stages completely destroyed the flow of the game-- blazing fast, then tedious hunting, then boring ass platforming. That’s just bad design. And the art really drew the line between classic and modern Sonic (since key Sonic Team members jumped ship after SA1). If you disagree… man, I’m just gonna blame that on me being older and playing Sonic when it first came out. I mean, people LIKE City Escape’s music… that always blows my mind.
EDIT: LOL ED209, I mean E-102 Gamma
It’s been a part of Tails breaking out of Sonic’s shadow and doing his own thing.
Edit:
I might be the only one who thinks that SA2 has actually aged better over the years than SA has. Picking a character and going through his side of the story is nice and all but instead of sitting through 10 hours of fishing and 10 hours of shooting stuff you actually get variety in one go. The Hero Story I thought actually got the ratio of stages down pretty well because Sonic was mostly the focus but with Dark Story Eggman ended up being most of the focus.
It could also be that there isn’t any fishing at all in SA2 that could be clouding my judgement on this…
City Escape infects people and is almost like Knux rap in that it sort of goes with what you’re doing at the time. Don’t tell me you didn’t catch yourself humming it at least once at some point lol.
No, SA2>SA
Sega is Making A New Storybook Game
First read about it on GAF. Lol @ ‘Sonic and the why isn’t this colors 2’ comment. If it actually comes out this year then it stands less of a chance being paid any attention at all…I’m going to suspect that this could be a title being made for Wii U and could be a launch window title.
Back in the day I had a next door neighbor who killed NSync, Backstreet Boys, Britney/Aguilera, Creed… all that dogshit early 00s pop music. So anything that sounded like that made me see red like those Kill Bill flashbacks. So maybe that clouded my judgment in a way that didn’t bother the rest of you guys.
SA1 is buggy as all hell and SA2 is easily the more polished technical engine (as it should be since it’s a sequel). It had all the pieces to be better than the last game, except for the art design/music, but I still think it missed the mark. I’m not with you on the drastic changes in the game’s pacing, and I’m guessing a lot of fans aren’t either, judging by the absence of non-Sonic segments in recent games. Also, you had to replay SA2’s levels individually anyway for extra rank and emblems. That tells me that the game’s priorities were messed up compared to SA1.
SA1’s fishing wasn’t horrible, especially if you just look at it as a semi-optional minigame… but it wasn’t missed. Although it was a fuckton more entertaining than Tails/Eggman.
Except it was about 2 hours of fishing and 6 hours of Sonic while SA2 insisted on saddling you with shit you don’t want to play through it’s entire story mode.
The only NSync I liked was their last CD before they broke up and that was mostly just the songs that were hits off of it. Anything else I hated. BSB hated period. Early Britney and Aguilera I hated. Aguilera actually has talent though. All that aside though I somewhat see what you’re saying. I didn’t think City Escape was so much poppy though as it was just cheesy goodness.
I don’t understand how SA2’s art design missed the mark in comparison to SA. Think you can provide me with some examples?
SA didn’t really have a ranking system though. You just beat whatever tasks it was they gave you for the levels to get the emblems iirc. Perhaps I’m misunderstanding this?
Big is in no way semi-optional. You had to play as all the characters to beat the game period. That’s definitely going to come down to personal opinion again cause I’d rather as many enemies as I can in lock on over and over again while platforming over fishing.
If you’re trying to beat both games then regardless you’re going to be playing through both games then you’re going to be saddling with shit you don’t want to play through regardless. That’s IF you’re trying to actually beat the game. If you want to play as just Sonic and Tails’ story then that’s cool but you have 4 other characters you gotta play through that are going to be from mediocre to bad (various opinions not exactly my own). Fishing itself’s time was probably a bit over exagerated…but that might be because of my hatred for Big probably made those segments felt longer. That or I’m lumping the entire Big campaign under ‘fishing’. Probably a bit of both.
What sega doesnt understand is that the formula for a good sonic game is simple…they just keep wanting to take the easy road out and focus on ++++gimmicks and +++++new characters rather than have a story thats good… archie comics already laid the groundwork for them with a story all they have to worry about is finding the platforming + speed formula.
I would like to thank Sonichuman for reminding me just how fucking awesome the SA2 OST is. The music for Knuckles stages are great.
I NEVER would’ve thought I find sonic fans on SHORYUKEN… wow. This … place… is … fucking… AWESOME!!!
^Duh.
Little known fact, Sonic 2 one of the greatest games ever was actually easier if you played Tails. You could skip so much shit with his ability to fly.
But Tails couldn’t fly in sonic 2… well not if you’re controlling him anyway. The computer made him fly all the time, it wasn’t until sonic 3 where you the player could make him fly. :c ( not trying to be a dick… my bad.) (( I’m just too big a sonic fan.))
Yea Tails couldn’t fly in Sonic 2.
Just read Sonic 226
Genesis Part
[details=Spoiler]Issue begins with Sonic running through…Green Hill! He notices that the animals are missing and is attacked by the GH Badniks and destroys them to free the animals. As he destroys the robots he notices that he recognizes their name, though he doesn’t know HOW he knows their names.
He eventually finds Snively near one of the big err prisons you break at the end of each Dr. Robotnik battle in the classic games.
Snively attacks him with a giant ball attached to his Egg flier, but is defeated by Sonic. Snively mentions his uncle: Dr. Eggman.
Breaking the prison, he frees not only the other animals but Sally, Antoine and Boomer.
Together they team up and head to Marble zone. There they finally meet up with Dr. Eggman in his original JP design!. The team manages to defeat him, and in his escape Dr. Eggman mentions building something…but not knowing WHY he’s building it.
The team find a passageway to Labyrinth zone and the issue ends.
Overall a very good issue IMO, and it’s really making me look forward to the next X3
The Off Panel segment was pretty funny too[/details]
Here’s the cover for Sonic Universe #30-
Prison Break zone
yea, Tails couldnt fly, but i always used to run “Tails only” in Sonic 2 just to be different. just to pick a different character. and I always liked his tail turning into a fan when he got going full speed.
My fav was picking tails only to get the chaos emeralds with ease XD. Tho sonic 3 will always be a fav. That music and a burning first stage second act. Golden
iPhones.
To this day, I still have the Stage Select/Super Sonic codes memorized for Sonic 2:
Options: 19, 65, 9, 17, back out to menu, hold A, press start, then in stage select, go to music, 4, 1, 2, 6
Why, OH WHY IN THE FUCK DO I STILL REMEMBER THIS CODE!?
