I’m so glad we don’t have many (or any) port snobs in this thread. A nice change from most of the other shmups forums.

Nah, port snobs in the same way that parts of the fighting game community used to (and still have) the mentality that if it’s not arcade-perfect, it’s not worth buying. This most recently came up with Guwange, as the game doesn’t use the full real estate of the screen when you’re in TATE (vertical) orientation and using a 4:3 TV. That and the usual things of slowdown not being exactly the same, etc.
I mean, those are legit complaints, but from a business perspective at least 90% of your potential audience has never even SEEN the arcade cabinet, let alone played it, so they won’t care.
Haha and now that I’ve said there aren’t any port snobs here I know someone’s going to jump on my comments.
Ah. Okay. That clears it up for me. I can kinda see that, but it won’t stop me from getting shot if the choice is mine. I’ll jump on and keep on shooting. Here’s hoping nobody comes in to start trouble over this though.

Really though, I’m not horribly bothered by it, but I do wish I could use my tate’d 4:3 TV fullscreen with it. But I also have a LCD that rotates, so that works. I’ve managed to get to Stage 3 without continuing so far, but after that point, it gets crazy. Gotta figure out how to use the shikigami better.
I remember some folks in here where pretty hot and bothered over the port of Death Smiles.
I keep seeing Death smiles at GS and wanting to get it but for some reason being too embarrased over the Lolis to buy it in person which makes no fucking sense cuz i’ve never felt that way opver a game purchase before and I’ve bought some questionable shit. It’s probably my not being a very big Cave fan manifesting itself in some other emotion or something… Shrug Shits dumb i should just buy it.
Dude, Death Smiles is fun. The scoring system isn’t that complicated, and I find the mechanics to be very understandable, not just relative to Cave’s other stuff. Although I’ll admit that I keep the limited edition box in my closet, away from public viewing.
In other news, I still don’t “get” Guwange. I find controlling the shikigami and myself very difficult, and am overwhelmed with bullets after stage 2. Is the general strategy to try and slow down all the bullets from non-popcorn enemies?
Yea its not the scoring system or mechanics or anything. I just dont really like those chaotic bullet curtain type games. I like more scripted, patterned, puzzle style shmups like RSG, Ikaruga, The Touhou Series, yada yada and not that caves stuff is bad it just tends to be that beyound the impossible chaotic curtains from hell games. Just tends to not be my bag. Still I should support shmups coming out here at all and its not like Cave games suck. They just dont entertain me as long as other styles do.
Fair enough, I had a talk over the weekend with someone who shared the same view, and I can understand where you’re coming from. What do you think of Raiden IV and Raiden Fighters Aces?
Yeah, i saw that earlier today, it seems that always slowing down bullets is key, as it maintains your chain in sections where there’s nothing to shoot. I’ll have some further looks at the guides on the Shmups.com and Cave-STG forums too.
Oh yeah, is the rotatable LCD that you have a monitor or TV? I’m looking to rotate my plasma TV (42"), and am looking for recommendations on wall mounts.

Attention my fellow shooters. I ask of you this. what is a good Audio/Video setup to get shot with? I’m thinking the surround sound for PS3 is gonna solve any and all sound woes I have. What say my fellow firepower fiends upon a good screen? Size matters, but we know that those bullet patterns are all about the small details. what screen can give us what we need? Next year is gonna be nice for my little stronghold.

Anyone know if DoDonPachi Dai Fukkatsu on 360 is region free? I heard that Espgaluda II was Caves last official region free game for a while from the Shooting Festival a couple of months ago.
Cave’s gameplay and scoring mechanics are arguably the best thing that’s happened to STGs… I just think most of their games are ugly to look at. I prefer developers like Grev (and everything they co-developed like Ikaruga and Gradius V) who kind of bridge Cave’s gameplay with everything else I’ve always liked about shooters. Not trying to troll so I’ll stop here.
Unfortunately the game is region locked.

Ah that sucks to hear, may have to find some alternatives like PS2 imports…you would think that in the long run, getting an imported 360 will eventually be the smarter thing to do.
I love shmups and all but KOF Skystage is just near ridiculous IMO, it’s nearly too hard to differentiate everything on screen.

If you have the money, just getting a JP 360 is prolly the best way to go.
DFK 1.51 is amazing. Me and a couple of other guys played it for the first time yesterday, and we were hooked…until my 360 started wiggin’ out lol. We came to agreement that Scrub Style–err, I mean Strong Style is the best all-around style to use
Seeing how there are many many shmups titles appearing now(and noticing), yeah, I may look into one in the near future…Got my VLX Premium to pay for and shipping a console overseas may hurt a bit even if I use proxy/yhj/used goods though.
So typically Cave’s 1.5/Black editions are usually graphic upgrades and extras right?

i know you can download guwange and ikaruga, and deathsmiles i bought the physical copy of it. but the rest of the games you have on your list are they imports and if so can they play on american xbox’s? thanks!
