yo i am really into shooters. i have played progear (the last boss just seems like he won’t die), and Ikaruga (i can’t seem to get part the 3rd stage on hard), and others like Touhou (8 i straight beast). but my question is how long did it take you guys to get really good? i seem to get beasted by the normal enemies, currently i am addicted to Touhou 8, and can make to the true final boss without losing too many lives (like 2 or 3) but i just seem to get overwhelmed by the bullets or, mezmerized by the bullet pattern. if you have any tips please hook me up.
hey hyper. welcome to the thread. the main way to play a shooter game is…
PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE.
some of the oldschool games like contra, sky shark, U.N. squadron, etc. were a little easier to get into because they didn’t have a thousand bullets per second on the screen. some games are pattern based and once you learn the pattern, you can do it blindfolded. some? pure speed. E.S.P. Ra De? It’s a mix of the two. You’ll need brains and reflexs to get around that one. if you wanna go hardcore, go for psikyo and cave shooters. that’ll get you shot up REAL quick.
Sounds like a problem with your display, not the game. The ports are about 95-99% arcade perfect, and there is no problem with the PS2 keeping up with the game. In fact, the PS2 runs Ibara and Mushihime-sama too fast (IE not enough slowdown). What kind of display are you playing on? That is what makes the most difference.
Also the Ibara port is shitty because it uses an interlaced resolution (480i) and filtered graphics, which pretty much ruins the graphics quality of the game. It also doesn’t slow down enough, which makes it a lot harder than the PCB version. The upside is that it has Arrange mode, which is very good.
ESPGaluda’s PS2 port is actually a lot better than the Arcade version of the game as well. It fixes the sprite static glitch (which is a huge problem on that PCB), actually saves high scores, can save replays, has practice mode (which is a huge advantage), and has a very good Arrange mode.
hey guys. just checking in to see what’s been going down in the shooter world. once my cashflow situation is straightened out I’ll be looking to get some stuff. just keep on giving me targets to find and I’ll keep getting shot.
Another GREAT arcade shooter to add to your lists: Guardian Force!
I first played this game as an import back on the Sega Saturn, but it was originally an arcade release(emued). Kinda innovative in that instead of flying a ship, your in a tank, but the special part about it is you can rotate the cannon 360 degrees, aim and shoot at anything.
In many games you’re kinda screwed if an enemy drifts behind, and you can no longer attack because the firing direction is permanently set straight ahead. In this one it did not matter where the enemy was. It was a 3 button shooter, left/right to control direction of the cannon and one to fire.
Pretty sweet graphics too being a 1998 game. Also instead of power-ups, you’d get modules that would let the player change into a different kind of tank with its own special abilities. This one was an above average shooter from the norm, really fun, cool graphics, and worth your attention fellas.
IMO, Mushihimesama Futari is definitely worth a trip down for an extended playing session. Black label is my favorite version, but Futari 1.5 is a sick game. Check it out!!
BTW, dunno if people have been following at all, but it looks there’s a big problem with the new Dodonpachi game. Basically, if a player continuously chains all 5 stages, the counter will stop at 99bil towards the end of Stage 5, making the second loop basically meaningless. This is a pretty big deal for hardcore score players, and will probably cause Cave to release a revision of the game. Bad move Cave…wasted money.
Otomedius is a pretty classic Gradius style side scroller that has done OK at arcades here. There will be a 360 version this year, but it will probably be region-locked because Microsoft are suicidal.
G already covered it, but no. the only possibility of any sort of return is when a lot of older gamers are with their kids around the computer and the kid(s) might get hooked.
Grrr… having a few difficulties with resistance: fall of man right now. looks like I tend to run out of bullets before I run out of enemies. sometimes, I just need a little mindless violence, sometimes I need to run and gun.
damn 360s. They won’t quit until I’m forced to buy one. When I do, let the enemies in my crosshairs tremble with a fear unlike any they have ever felt before!
Just make sure you buy a Japanese 360 if you are going to get one, a US one won’t play any of the import shooters. Although the quality of the Ketsui port is still questionable and it’s almost certain the Daioujou port won’t be as good as the PS2 one.
Raiden Fighters Aces I recall has a number of lock-up glitches in it. Don’t really recall much else, but the game has a ton of display options and hey, it’s all 3 Raiden Fighters games.
The Ikaruga port is completely worthless as it’s got bugs and problems with a few stages. Trigger Heart port is actually really good, but they changes the scoring system completely for it (it’s actually better in my opinion though).
Res port is pretty damn good, HD graphics are very nice.
And Shikigami 3 … It’s a pretty good game but I’ve heard nothing about the 360 version yet.
