Who’s been on Dat Ikaruga?! I can’t get passed stage 3 goddamnit. This game is so fucking hard…bullet grazing indeed with a fucking vengeance.
So is Ikaruga the end all of japanese shooters? I saw that clip with ONE arcade of 24+ ikaruga machines, good god.
Whats the deal? why is this game such a masterpeice?
Fixed.
G.O.T - Yea, I’ve been stuck on 3 for… too embarrassed to even mention it.
No, but it is fucking good. There’s still plenty other of incredibly awesome shooters out there.
^ what are some other titles? I want to youtube some crazy examples of japanese skills that make me go WTF WOW!!
mushihime sama, gradius V if you don’t know about it, and actually I’m not really sure what else that’s out recently aside from the plethora of Cave-made shooters like the aforementioned mushihime sama, esp galuda, the mushihime sama sequal which I forget the title to, dodonpachi daioujou, etc.
check out Ketsui and Mushihimesama Futari
TBH, I don’t like Ikaruga as much as I thought I would. It has a tight presentation and I like the music and design of the enemies but I think the chain system is stupidly designed. Why put a four-enemy cap on it before you can switch colors? Just makes things stupidly complicated IMO.
it might seem overly complex if you’re trying to chain the wrong number of enemies lolol
i’m sure you knew it was 3
ikaruga is a blast, but for me it doesn’t compare to straight up shooters, it’s more like a puzzle’m’up for me
Er, yeah I mean that you hit 3 of the same color then have to change to the next color.
Ive only beaten the 3rd level once, I like that game, but its not OMG BEST GAME EBAAAR!!
I admire them for putting a unique spin on it though.
every day I fall in love with the PC-Engine more and more :lovin:
I agree with this actually. Ikaruga’s cool and all, but I like plenty others more.
I think my favorites are Einhander still, and for whatever inexplicable reason, Progear. I think the art design in Progear is a big portion of that reason though. I really like the backgrounds, music, character art, etc. etc. Mushihime-sama too.
That’s also kidna the reason I have a love/hate with R-type, some of the level design is so downright creepy like the crystal level in R-type Delta or the “2 shillouettes of people fucking in the background” level in R-type Final, or even any of the other alternate weird as hell final levels in Final. Some of it is rather unsettling in 3D(I’m easily supceptable to suggestion) so I don’t play it alot because of that.
I’m a big fan of ESPGaluda, Dodonpachi Daioujou and Mushihimesama. These are games that may seem really challenging at first, but there is a logic to the bullet pattern (danmaku). I didn’t find that in Shikigami no Shiro 3, in fact I’ve read Japanese players complaining about how stupidly hard that game is and how hard the last couple of bosses are without bombs. But being essentially a shooter noob I can’t really speak on which games are good and bad.
R-type can get pretty fucking creepy can’t it. LOL
Fixed.
Got the games mixed up. That’s one of the main draws for me is the creepy/gross atmosphere.
The 2nd Stage in Delta was/is so damn cool. With the bydo growths just taking over the lab. The two people fucking was really strange but I think the stage with the shit in the glass tubes was weirder. Final? Final was so clean that it didn’t creep me out except for the Final stage when you become a bydo. Not only was that fucking clever as hell but it was creepy to see you as the enemy now and wrecking other R-Types in the process something fierce. Then there is no explanation as to what happens next.
And that’s another thing I like about Final. I’m sure that Command will illuminate some more history about the series but I doubt that they’ll wrap up things with Final using that game. You go to the future to warn humanity that creating the Bydo is a bad idea. You stop some crazy version of the Bydo. And you become the Bydo. And with the human fleet being as big as it is in Final, all three endings are possible.
Wait what? I’m positive the people fucking stage is in Final, like absolutely positive, the stage is completely covered in like some weird ass bronze liquid and there’s no details just the liquid and the shillouettes. Also all the enemies look like blocks that are different colors.
But yeah the turning to bydo stage was probably even creepyier actually. Everything just felt futile at that point. Definitely looking forward to command though, even though it’ll probably creep me out too =(
WOOHOO!
I finally beat Soldier Blade, the laser reflecting mirrors in the final level are a pain in the ass.
now I gotta 1cc that shit.
epic failure edit
I made it to the final boss without dying a single time. now, I had maxed out my lives (only 9) and was pretty confident.
laser reflecting boss kills me…again…and again…and again until all my lives are gone and I had to continue.
fuck.
took me about 6 continues before I could beat the game again.
Einhander and progear will make it into schoolbooks in the future. schoolbooks, or whatever kids will be using by then.
I KNEW IT!! I KNEW I WASN’T THE ONLY ONE WHO CAUGHT THAT SHIT!!! I tried to show that part to a friend of mine without getting killed, but he just couldn’t see it. the japanese will do ANYTHING to make the game hard, and that includes screwing with the background…Litterally!!!
-Starhammer-
So what the fuck was in Delta? OH! I think I remember. The last stage in Delta was with the thing that you were ‘chasing’ and you seeing the history of humanity up until that point. I hated the ending for the Cerberus in Delta. Shit was so fucked up. “Wheee whee I’m escaping I’m escaping. Oh wait. Hold on. The portal is closing?! Oh god it closed. Why is it getting darker. OMG THE MUSIC! FUCK WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS SHIT.” Yeah. At least you get to find out what happened to it in Final.
It’s funny how no one has really attempted to replicate the experience that is found in Einhander yet. I think that Ether Vapor is the only one.
Yeah so the fucking was in Final.
This might be a given, but seeing as it hasn’t really been mentioned, if you haven’t played psyvariar 2, you need to go out and acquire it now. Far and away my favorite shmup. It’s a great change of pace from the cave shmups. The grazing system is fun, and the boss bullet patterns are great. And visually, its the best looking shmup IMO, esp. with the DC vga box. Check this vid out:

That defnintely is not me playing
I still need to play Psyvariar and Psyvariar 2 myself. I really want to. The game looks dope as hell. There’s also games like Border Down I MUST acquire at some point.
ESPGaluda IS awesome as fuck, too. Still need to get ahold of that last DoDonPachi released.
