The shooter games thread returns! The Empire Of Ammo says, EVERYBODY GETS SHOT!

I was wondering what were some of the first games that got you into this genre. Finding out my dad gave away his sega master system made me wonder what did I mostly play and realized a lot of them were shmups.

Cloud master. Which one of the enemies is flying bowls of ramen that shoot at you.

R-type.

Fantasy zone II. I believe I had the first one as well but didnt play it as much.

Thunder Blade. Dont think I ever passed the part at 4 minutes.

Global Defense. Each time an enemy passes over the screen the bar fills up. When its at max your ship is destroyed.

Also played Zaxxon 3D but cant find a video. I havent played any of these games in at least 10 years.

Are they as awesome as I imagine? I plan to order a complete set from that Otaku site. I don’t need a bajillion color variants. Especially since I don’t know what they look like.

Here’s what I think should be included in the next series and beyond.

R-Type Delta: The Albatross or the Cerberus or The POW Armor. They are all fine choices but the POW armor would be the best. Or release two of them in the same volume.

19XX: One of the crafts from 19XX. Surprised that we haven’t gotten one from this series yet. They’ll have to do one since a new game is on the way. Thanks again Capcom!

DoDonPachi: Duh. Can clearly see why here.

Gallop: It’s like how image fight is apart of the R-Type mythos. So they could get away with the updated Final version of the ship.

Einhander: Astraea Mk II. I know some of these shmup fans don’t like Einhander (why!?) but this one game from Square was amazing. A replica containing four-five weapons would be cool. It could come with the vulcan cannon, wasp, blade, hedgehog, and/or cannon. They can release the red Astraea Mk II. as a variant (since it’s a secret ship in-game.) and that could include the juno, flash, riot, mosquito, and/or grenade launcher. And to top that off they could make a replica of the Die Schabe (the little police unit is a secret ship as well) and include it with the Endymion Mk. III. That ship could carry the python, spreader, juno, riot, and/or blade.

Radiant Silvergun: One red and blue Silvergun.

Ikaruga: Both ships in both black and white. So four replicas total.

In The Hunt: It’s a submarine!

Thunderforce 4: That’s the one most people are familiar with right?

Axelay: Maaaaaaaan. No fucking brainer here. Who doesn’t want this in plastic form.

Cybattler:Obscure game? Yeah. Cool ship design since it’s not a ship but a mecha? Turn it into a replica? Definitely.

Phalanx: Because it’s a decent enough game that people are familiar with around the world.

Gunstar Heroes: Remember the craft they use in the only shmup stage in the game? Yeah I do.

Lots of ships. I think they should start a spin-off project if the second series does as good as the first. Get to the shmup sub-genres like the Run n’ Guns, On The Rails shooters, etc.

Metal Slug: Slug that comes with Marco. Alternate Orange Slug that comes with Tarma. The figures don’t need a lot of articulation. They just need to be able to get into game poses convincingly. Knife slash, holding their machine gun/pistol, etc.

Contra 3: It’s Contra!

Gunstar Heroes: These can get more articulation. Should also come with the rail sliders from the cave stage.

Panzer Dragoon Orta: Orta plus the dragon in it’s normal form.

I’m not into bullet hell games (but that history video showed me how they work so that could game change) except DoDonPachi. So I’m sure you guys know of other iconic ships that need to be made in miniature plastic form.

Progear is an awesome horizontal shmup http://youtube.com/watch?v=l2Mws0cPeXY

Vasara is interesting http://youtube.com/watch?v=7nMV3wtXvBc

All of the DonPachi games are insane, here’s DDP3 http://youtube.com/watch?v=J9fCO1awJ6w

Gigawing can be fun
Raiden Fighters Jet is my favorite of that series
Aero Wings (Sonic Wings) series has a talking dolphin
Dangun Feveron is pimp if you like disco

CAN be?
gigawing is FIERCE!
gigawing 2 is the superior game but my heart lies with the original.

Yup, on Gradius Collection for the PSP. Not quite good at it. I guess the Revive options on the Gokujou Parodius and Sexy Parodius kinda spoiled me. Keep dying on the Moai boss. Wish they kept the 2 Player option for it.

Also found something interesting about Jikkyou Oshaberi Parodius. On the SNES version, Lord British’s Laser is just like Vic’s Laser. But on the PS1/PSP version, its a Cyclone Laser. Not just the look of it, like the arcade version of Gokujou Parodius and Sexy Parodius, but its exactly like the Cyclone Laser on arcade Gradius 3. Meaning, it will keep drilling a target until its destroyed. Sue also has this Laser.

Well as soon as I wake up, I’ll think I’ll download Ikaruga on XBox Live.

furry, yes they’re dope as hell IMO.

yo, new shooters!!

“Ketsui: Those Bound to Hell X” (my translation) and “Dodonpachi Black Label X” both on 360!

Shade don’t forget to pickup gradius collection for psp:tup:

I have been playing g-darius and gunstar heroes advance lately. Also i want suggestions for good rail shooters, and yes i know about the panzer series and rez.

Fo’sho. Just need to rebuy a PSP, first. =(

Weren’t those both canceled/denied by MS for the 360, or are they back on?

Hmmm. Must be back on since that news was posted today. Both say 2008 releases, although when is not announced.

ikaruga is apparently up on XBL. confirm anybody?

edit: confirmed.

also, just found an interesting page in japanese where they rate all the shooters in terms of difficulty. most difficult ones at top.

man this thread is so informative :china:

I loved G-Darius. I also love how my first night playing it I would fall asleep while playing and would find myself waking up moments later still alive. Is the game easy? Not necessarily. I think I just got really lucky over and over again as I managed to beat the game before running out of continues. Loved G-Darius. I’d like to see a high res version with more bosses one day. BRING IT BACK TAITO!

Gunstar Heroes Advance. Hmmm. It was enjoyable. Still not as fun as the original since they took out throwing and zoomed in on the action.

As far as on the rails shooters. Panzer Dragoon is the pinacle of the sub-genre. With Orta being the best of the series period. People who say otherwise blow chunks. Only other good on the rails shooter that I can think of is Omega Boost for PS1. Rumor has it that it’s coming to the PSN/PSP so you keep your eyes peeled. It wasn’t on the rails though. It played out in a very large 3D space (unless you were in a tunnel stage) and you locked on to clusters of enemies and attacked from there. Polyphony Digital was behind this game and it shows when you watch your replays. It looks really sick to see you firing off salvos of homing lasers on a giant spider boss as you fall down a tunnel shaft. Or when you take on a fleet of battle cruisers in space with robotech missiles all around. Game just needed better enemy design/level design.

Hey guys here’s a translation of that shooter difficulty ranking they put together on 2ch. Keep in mind, this is a 2005 list! Also know that where it says final boss it means last, true boss, and that “first/second section” probably means there’s a portion of the game unlockable only by clearing the first section with certain conditions. I think

Hope the names and everything are accurate. It’s not the greatest list but is kinda interesting.

Speaking of Ikaruga. Shoot the Core’s latest review

Never heard of that prototype mode before. Sounds cool.

BTW, dodonpachi daifukkatsu is doing loctest in Kobe, Fukuoka and Tokyo right now. Man if I had the time I’d head out to Kobe to check it out

For anyone who missed the video of DDP daifukkatsu the first time, you can see it here if you can manage to register for nico nico douga.

I downloaded Soldier Blade for my wii.
god that game is awesome, but whats hard about it is how fast your ship moves. after playing Ikaruga and Shikigami 2, I found myself thinking “whooooa! slow down! what? Im on the slow speed!?”. while its not a bullet hell game I still found myself wildly sliding around the screen at times. This seems to be a trend with Hudson shmups on the PC Engine.
its a really fun game and its definitely worth the purchase/rom download
