I looked it up, so Under Defeat is going to be widescreen? That’s going to be weird…Im just going to stick with the dreamcast due to my tate setup…
Seems to have both widescreen and tate modes. In fact, I recall posting a video of it in tate some time ago.
Isn’t the tate mode though have borders? That’s just weird to me or was just the youtube video…
TATE mode on console games usually doesn’t have borders.
In MAME, you can just go into the game’s display properties and uncheck “enforce aspect ratio.”
Yes i know that but on the video the tate mode on this one has borders on it…Also this suppose to be a widescreen hd remix of Under Defeat…
I picked it up a couple of months ago, and I have not noticed any frame rate issues, plays rather well actually.
Greatness. One of these days, you’re gonna have to switch houses with me so that I can live the good life too. Until then…
you KNOW what I’m gonna say…

Was able to pickup Donpachi on craigslist…It was in a beatup piece of shit cab & some old dude like 55years old was trying to sell it. He sold me the PCB w/marquee for $80 without the shit cab.
I put in my Astro City, my first shmup pcb

Fuck I’m jelly.
If I had a cab I’d probably try and grab Saidaioujou asap.
^What he said. I gotta get my money in order so that I can get down like this.

i recently played Panzer Dragoon Orta. great game. but i’d like to know if you guys think it can be classified as something belonging to the shooter genre?
i mean yeah, its not a vertical or horizontal “classic” shooter…but you really, for the most part don’t control the dragon, just the aiming reticule. and it has a shooter type feel to it.
also, anyone ever played this vertical shooter known as dragon spirit? there’s a guy , a knight actually, he’s dressed in knight’s armor and like a blue cape…he holds his sword up to the sky, and a lighting bolt hits it, and he is instantaneously transformed into a flying blue dragon. anyone know if that game is anywhere on the net?
its really old. arade old. but golden.
Of course it’s shmup. You dodge bullets, shoot down missiles, and hammer out lock on lasers till your thumb wears out. It’s a 3D on rails shmup. Panzer Dragoon Forever! I’m surprised you minimized the player control so much in Orta. Changing you position is such a huge part of the gameplay (slowing down or speeding up) and you still have enough control over the dragon where moving him a little more right or left is either life or death. The first game was definitely a shooting gallery but yeah…
I think what makes a shmup a shmup regardless of dimension is the intensity and arcade feel. Like a 3D space shmup, not on-rails, could be made if someone really wanted to make it happen but I don’t think it’s happened yet. I’d love to make one though. It’s a dream of mine.

Just beat it by throwing myself wildly at all these undersea in space fish faces. I also want to preface this by saying that G Darius was the last Darius I was hardcore into so I’ve basically been waiting for a new game, the PSP game, that never came to America.
Sound: Zuntata (I don’t need to say more do I?)
Gameplay/Control: I don’t know what changes were made from the PSP game but from G-Darius you lose the ability to capture enemy crabs (and fish). However by dropping that mechanic it makes it easier to play this game on a touch only device. Won’t have to worry about an extra button or deal with the occasionally less than ideal movement (Cave is still number one when it comes to ship control). It’s not game breaking but it would be nice if it wasn’t as 1 to 1 distance wise as it currently is. Cave’s control works because with a sharp but short slide of your finger your ship will move really far in a given direction. But a slow slide will result in slow movement from the ship. Even so since DariusBurst SP mimics what your finger is doing at least your finger doesn’t have to be in the way. The Burst energy beam or giant energy ball aren’t as exciting as the Alpha and Beta beam matches in GDarius. The bosses still fire their fancy beam and you still counter with your own but it’s just not the same kind of tug-o-war match like GDarius. I kind of look at everything as being more streamlined and closer to the original Darius games than GDarius. Levels go all the way up to the letter K I believe (I chose the top path and I took me to H so I figure I J K for the rest). All the bosses have fun patterns and ramp up in difficulty nicely. Although the boss of H was easier than the E. That E boss had a ton of parts to destroy before getting to the core it and it still kept fighting. You also start with two unique ships. One is just your standard Silver Hawk
Graphics: Looks better than GDarius but the environments could have used a touch more pizazz. I still have more levels to play so I hope there are some more organic levels. The route I went was mostly space/space station based. Still there were neat touches here and there. I’m also playing on the 4S I did not run into any slowdown or crashing to speak of.
Longevity: It’s a Darius game so that means you’ll need to replay it a few times to see all the stages and bosses. There are also two more unlockable ships to add to the two that you start with. There’s an art gallery and something called a mission mode that I have not unlocked. And of course if you are really into Darius games you’ll be looking to find the best route to take for maximum points and all that jazz.
EDIT: I somehow overlooked the differences between Original and SP modes and some neat control options. First Original is the PSP original and SP is the remixed mode (thus getting us to the letter Z with number of stages). That means new/remixed music too. So lots of music to enjoy here. And the control options I was referring to? You can move the on screen buttons where ever you want but even more interesting is this: [spoilers=“Scree Size Differences”]

I took that with my phone and as you can see change the game screen down to this size and move it around and several locked locations. So remember earlier how I complained about my finger getting in the way or having trouble in trickier obstacle laden areas. Not an issue now. Yes it’s smaller but I could still see everything. This game has quickly become my second or third favorite shmup behind Infinity Gene.
Overall? I love this game. I have a pretty bad ass version of Darius in my pocket (the music is so good and I might actually like it better than GDarius’ music) but most of all, and you guys might disagree with me, but it’s about damn time we started getting more horizontal shoot em ups, anywhere, period. Hori Shmups are my personal favorities so it’s nice to see a new one.
Btw the game is $10.99 on iTunes. Yeah it’s a steep price for iTunes but if you think about it, it’s not a lame as port (Raystorm iOS), it’s not a years and years old game (a few Cave games), and the production values are higher than any other shmup on iTunes. Plus it’s Darius!
Man, spent my whole weekend up in Chicago for a local shmupmeet, was freaking incredible. Watched a dude get to 2-3 in DoDonPachi, managed to 1CC Ketsui on the actual PCB, and had a blast in the arcade venue we were at.
Also, just waiting for my copy of Under Defeat HD to arrive now
What? a whole weekend of getting shot, and you didn’t bring us any pics?
-Starhammer-
I took some pics here: http://s1239.photobucket.com/albums/ff517/drunkninja42/Chicago%20Shmupmeet/
There should be some better ones coming soon from the guy who ran the event, I’ll post them up when they’re available. That Shaq Attaq pinball machine and the 6-player X-Men game (which we did a full 6-player game on) were some the the surprises of the weekend aside from the shooting.
Much better. Damn that looked like fun. I gotta get to one at some point, which means I’m gonna have to lock down a lot of my spending. I think I should have what I need money-wise to get what I need by summer if i can control myself. Until then, I shall continue to get shot as the doctor has ordered.
