Sorry for being blur about Jamestown talk in this thread, I just posted here asking about it before rushing off to work.
THE FINAL LEVEL IS KICKING MY ASS. Seriously, I’m so bad at games that ask me to dodge obstacles. 
I normally reach the final boss with one life to spare. Meaning yes, I used 2 credits trying to maneuver.
For the same reason, I’m shit at Gradius.
^I hate Gradius. And keep trying. I did it with a friend (haven’t done it alone yet).
And to anyone who reads this post and is a shoot em’ up fan that doesn’t own Jamestown.

Copy pasting my description of Jamestown here that I wrote for a friend:
The most interesting thing about the game is the Vaunt system. You fill your Vaunt bar by collecting the medals that enemies drop. Once full, you can activate it for a 2 second shield of invincibility and a power + points boost to your shots, which lasts as long as your bar hasn’t depleted (you can collect more medals during this time to extend the length of your powerups). Additionally, press the Vaunt button again after you’ve activated and it’ll produce a much smaller, briefer shield for those moments where you need to avoid death.
Other interesting things are the ships, which are very varied. All of them play radically different, the first one is pretty standard, the second has aimable shots, the third shoots slow fireballs of death, the fourth has bombs that detonate when you want them to.
Also, the level design is really odd. It’s a vertical SHMUP, but the screen is displayed horizontally, so you ha ve lots more room to work with. Similarly, this means enemies spawn a lot from areas where you can’t really attack, making this feel quite different and I think will promote “best path” kinds of runs throughout levels.
The game and music are both gorgeous, and the story is brief but semi-interesting but these are extras.
Also has unlockables, and a multiplier system for scores (higher difficulties = higher multiplier)
The game is surprisingly easy on the default difficulty, probably to loosen people up. Legendary and above are the difficulties to SHMUP connoisseurs will probably want to play, which is good, as later levels are only selectable on higher difficulties anyway.
I’ve got it as well (the second one too), but i feel the touchscreen is the superior form of control in shooters, so I’ll happily repurchase it for a new experience.
Been out of the shooter loop for the last few weeks, but I did get my PC setup with the hacked Type X games (except for Raiden IV, I absolutely cannot get that to run at all no matter what I do). Gigawing Generations is pretty sweeet. And since I have a 27" CRT PC monitor, it’s just that much better 
I got it to run by doing the following:
Open both of the “game” and “loader” bat files in notepad and add “pause” to the second line. When you get done, they should read:
typex_loader game.exe
pause
and
typex_loader launcher.exe
pause
After that, right-click the “game.exe” file (the one with the space ship icon), go to the “compatibility” tab and underneath “Run in compatibility mode with ________” check all the boxes for the various display settings. Next, to run the game, don’t click the .exe file but instead click the bat file. Also, it helps if you minimize or close all of the windows except for the Raiden IV folder.
So, playing Jamestown has reinvigorated my love for cave shooters and shmups.
What other games are this style, preferably available on Steam?
There is zeit² on Steam, but it’s really lame IMO. Other than that, there’s not really anything I’m aware of. Your best bet is to simply get MAME and check out a bunch of shmups that way.
what the hell, i didnt even know steam had shootemups like jamestown. totally added it to my wish list and will be purchasing it soon.

^You didn’t know because they really didn’t but best believe that this release can start something new. I see no reason why Cave or anyone else for that matter can’t port shmups to the PC.
I can’t wait to have the “Shmup Bundle!” on Steam.

Really, $10 was more than fair for this game. $5 is just insane. GO BUY IT!
i dont see how you are supposed to beat gauntlet on judgement difficulty without taking a single hit. that’s way more intense than just 1CC that’s NO DEATHS…like what? no surprising now one has that achievement yet. they should do a patch or update to include online multiplayer, that would be awesome.
