Seems okay I guess. It’s just basic commentary of wtf is going on, instead of anything more detailed or specific like Ultra David/James Chen do.

Maybe you should try picking one match and then doing a very very thorough analysis of one of your matches, or a guest’s match, and then have that person explain everything that was going on in his/her mind throughout the entire match. Something like the Daigo Exposed panel at Evo 2011:

Preferable if you can get both players from the match to talk. You’ll probably have to find a match with two players of very high level and who both know the matchup inside and out, so that you don’t get responses like “well I did that random neckbreaker because I wanted to start vortexing.”

I’ve considered this myself too and I believe it has more to do with experience and also knowledge of what to expect. When you’ve got two players going back and forth feeling each other out waiting for an opportunity you need something to talk about, but I don’t think that from the point of view of being a commentator should you “try” to say something. Ultra David and James Chen are able to talk about things such as who people are, and what it’s like to be playing at a certain location or whatever, and these are things that I couldn’t emulate with online matches (nor do I want to).

I realise that for myself, I see things in hindsight a lot of the time. I think about what should/could have happened and that’s my personality when it comes to commentary. With experience I’ll become better at that, but there are other ways to improve this series too. Street Fighter is a difficult game to commentate on because it’s not easy to point out what to expect, and you don’t have time to explain things mid-match because at any given moment something new may happen.

My biggest mistake was to have more than two people commentating at the same time. That is something I can fix immediately, but if I am to become better I would have to know a few more things:

  • Knowledge about players (so I have something to talk about during down-times)
  • Recognise more match-ups outside of Ibuki vs. (so I can comment on what to expect)
  • Use time between loading replays to explain mechanics

Another thing is that it’s okay not to know every match-up in the game because I can have someone else to commentate with, which helps make sure there’s always someone who knows what’s going or has something interesting to say every now and then. Both FoRE GoD and SevenDaggers don’t watch this game as much is needed, and the only other person I know who would be interested is this guy called MingoDynasty.

In terms of doing a video similar to the one you posted, I don’t think that’s a good concept. People would like to hear what certain players think, but I believe that it’s more to do with how interesting the player is. After all, Umehara could bake a cupcake and everyone at SRK would click to see it.

Though I could be wrong, maybe it’s something a lot of people would like to see. How about doing an analysis on your match as I ask you questions during it? =)

More than two people is fine, though I would say 3 is probably the max. It’s just that you were basically the only one doing any sort of meaningful commentating, as that Daggers guy seemed just clueless to just the game in general, and Fore god sounded like a 12 year old kid (who also didn’t really contribute anything). Reminded me of my CSS days where I had these two 16 year olds on my team who were annoying as fuck.

A primary reason why I recommended the thorough analysis idea was because as you said, SF games are fast and there usually isn’t enough time to commentate on everything that happens, especially with a rushdown character on the screen (or worse, two), which can be unfortunate if there is actually a lot of footsies/reading/etc. going on which has to be overlooked due to time. With a thorough analysis, you’re allowed to rewind the replay and rewatch parts as many times as you’d like to make sure you completely 100% understand what happened.

For example, one time you said I messed up a safe jump and accidentally did option select throw, but actually I went for a j.LK safe jump (instead of j.HP safe jump) for the lesser hitstun, into instant throw (probably a bad idea since this Abel guy was clearly mashing wakeup throw literally every game). In another example when I mashed EX kazegiri and Abel blocked it and did a late FA to “punish”, you recommended that Ibukis in this situation should just mash another EX kazegiri. If you looked (or had time to look at them) at my inputs, that was actually exactly what I was going for, but I reacted to his FA too late (I also blame lag; stupid 2 bar connection).

I think it’s a good concept. I don’t think it’s good just because it’s about Daigo. Even doing the same thing with another top player like JWong, and then maybe with a mid level player and then comparing the two thought processes would be a great benefit. Especially with the lesser known characters such as Ibuki, it would greatly help newcomers learn how a good or solid Ibuki player thinks. I don’t know what noob Ibukis think when they play, maybe something along the lines of “let’s do a neckbreaker. Oh it hit, okay now let’s vortex. Oh nvm it got blocked, I’m dead gg.”

Then they can go on and watch any seasoned Ibuki player (again, doesn’t necessarily have to be the best Ibuki, just as long as they have a good grasp on their character and general mechanics) and compare with what they might be thinking. Maybe something like “well I noticed my opponent loves to backdash after getting antiaired with b+MP, so next time I’ll do a neckbreaker to catch this. Considering that if I land the vortex setup afterward I’ll win the round, I think this is worth the risk.”

Not only this, but it can benefit the player by forcing him/her to re-evaluate his/her decisions, in fear of just saying “well, I wasn’t really on point with that mash ultra. I was on autopilot.”

I’d be willing to do it, but again, I hate my voice. And I’m an introvert.

If anything, I would just do the same sort of text analysis like back in the day (super SF4?) when I played my Ryu vs RedCaliburn’s Ibuki, and I did an extensive write up of everything I was thinking, for just the first round. Can’t seem to find the thread/post anymore, since that Ken baffoon guy or whatever merged the older critique thread with some random thread.

The Commentary Series is presented by Ibuki PLAYER GUIDE so including Ibuki matches is a must, and I do have the opportunity to watch these matches over to make sure I note every bit of relevant advice I can. The more of this sort of thing I do the better the initial commentary will be, so great idea!

It’s too bad you guys don’t understand French. I swear the best Street Fighter commentator ever is Ken Bogard, the most popular French one. He’s able to explain everything, speak fast, clearly, and make the match living just as a football commentator would do.

If you want to punish a mashing Ryu, it’s easy:

1 - Unblockable (although it can loose to tatsu EX)
2 - Neckbreaker - whiffed st.LP - SJ LP Kunai -> THIS stuffs every shoryus and you can combo afterwards
