Kotaka was throwing normals between his fireballs which gave Anikenā€™s Ken enough frames to win the fireball war. At other instances, Aniken was too close to him for him to finish charging.
But that seemed to work really well for Kotaka as it threw Anikenā€™s flow off, causing him to lose by a landslide.

Was he preemptively whiffing buttons so if Aniken jumped heā€™d get AAā€™d while also using the backwards movement of that hop kick to gain distance?

Ibuki fHK is easy to whiff punish for me

I am not quite sure. The hop kick would at best trade with Kenā€™s jump kick or at worst get hit cleanly and leave him open to a very painful combo.
For AA, he would likely use the backfist to trade and win on damage. And some instances he just used a normal kick instead. Tough to know exactly what he was going for there without asking him.
But whatever it was, it worked. 10-1 against Aniken is a huge upset.

Yeah thatā€™s the hop kick. They nerfed the recovery on it in Season 2 so itā€™s dumb easy to whiff punish now. Iā€™m assuming the Season 3 nerf is that itā€™s minus 4 on block now.

3S: 9 frame start up, 21 recovery, minus 2 on block (shorter characters can crouch IIRC)

F+HK (Bonsho Kick/Bonshou Geri)

SFV : 14 frame start up, 4 active, 19 frame recovery (16 in Season 1), minus 3 on block
3S: 12 frame start up, 20 recovery, minus 1 on block
