Yes and yes. The answer is silencers. It hunk they’re made of foam, but I can’t account for them. I know people who can and do, though. They aren’t all that special.
Damn, you seem really obsessed with Doom lol! Feels good to know I’m not the only one
There are “silent” JLF levers and while i haven’t seen one in person, they do seem to quiet it down a bit from what I’ve seen in comparison videos
I had “silent” sanwa buttons though and they didn’t make a lot of difference. The “clack” sound was replaced with something more like a “thud” but I don’t know if it was much quieter (but the sound was less distracting).
To be honest, I think a lot of it has to do with the case. My Qanba Drone, with “silent” buttons was louder than my Obsidian Hitbox without them… If you think about it, most of the sound being made is in the case, so it can either mute the sound, or get a nice echo and make it louder. I’m sure just the plastic shell (and its orientation) makes a difference, but gluing something like felt around the walls or something may help a bit more if it’s really an issue.
I just started playing DOOM 2 on GzDOOM and it’s so awkward haha. And very poorly lit too. There’s no proper way to increase brightness in dark areas, only light. Also, somehow the par times make me sad, because I always go over them.
Also, what is Ultimate DOOM? Is it DOOM 1?
They have tons of options to make them quieter. Silent sticks, analog sticks, “silent” buttons etc.
My hitbox is pretty quiet. It has silent buttons (the plungers are a softer plastic to deaden the noise) and I added a foam pad inside to absorb sound.
Plus buttons that use mechanical switches like gamer fingers are really quiet.
And if you aren’t the type to really slap the shit out your set-up, it can stay pretty quiet.
I think it’s kinda supposed to be poorly lit, like they want to make it hard to see.
The controls are a bit awkward. You may have to adjust your sensitivity to help and I also liked playing with “always run” on.
Also make sure strafe is your left and right (or A and D) keys - because they made the game playable with a keyboard only, those may even be defaulted to turn.
I also like turning off the crosshair because it kinda messes with me and the whole “no vertical aiming” bit.
It’ll get really awkward later when you realize you have to speed-run off of cliffs and ledges to hit some crazy hard to catch ledge for a secret, which would be utterly simple with a jump button.
Oh yeah, and Ultimate Doom is Doom 1 but with an additional episode.
Yeah the poorly lit sections are a no go. Gonna try and speed through DOOM 1 and get the blessed 8 time on Hangar.
Oh yeah, those par times are like speed runs basically. Not the world record by any means, but I think calling it “par” was misleading. If you are trying to kill most demons and get a secret or two, you won’t hit that par. And you certainly won’t do it on your first couple of runs.
Doom 1 has some poorly lit sections too, but maybe it’s not that bad. Is the brightness cranked?
Yeah, but that ruins the light areas. I’ll try and fix it later in the .ini files, if there’s something holding it back there.
Maybe, but i suspect it would be part of the map design itself.
I used to make levels for Duke Nukem 3D, which had a very similar level editor, and if you increased the brightness too much, it would do as you’re describing (make non-dark areas too bright, while barely effecting the dark areas).
Damn. If that’s the case, this is going to be rough, because I have really bad eyes, and what I suspect is possibly CoVId now is really ruining my patience for inconveniences.
Damn. Are you okay?
Say what now?
I’m like 5 years old, I think I’m ok. And possibly immortal. You know I was thrown off a motorcycle at 7? Not a scratch. I’m convinced God has to ask me for repentance.
A washing machine fell on me from the second floor of a house when I was helping my friend move out. Barely had a scratch.
You ain’t shit, get your ass to a doctor.
