I get like this on occasion. I’ll be back to just two before you know it. It used to be three but I stopped playing Laura during Season 3 to focus on Alex and Kolin. I can’t seem to play her anymore. Not that I was every good with her but I was good enough to more than I lost in Rank at my skill before. Now…I don’t know.
I need to play 2016 again. I cant even remember when you first run into the Cyber Demon. Is that on Argent D’nur?
The what now? I ran into it at the end of Lazarus, where you need the thingy in him to open a portal to Hell, so you can chase something in there and then get brought back via Hayden’s tether, who, by the way, we know very little about at this stage.
Oh right, i forgot he was a boss fight. In Eternal he’s a normal enemy in the later game. I really should play it again. Unfortunately, I think Eternal may have ruined it for me.
Oh my God, Eternal really is insanity then. He was a pain in the ass, but then I remembered I have a chaingun and the Gauss Cannon.
Play Doom 3 and it’s expansion Resurection of Evil. Truly good games, just don’t expect the 2016 and Eternal experience.this is a different beast.
Having that said, the claustrophobic gameplay and atmosphere it has can be a thrill. I enjoy the games quite a lot.
Did you ever play a Serious Sam Game?
The Bosses are normal enemys later in the game too and they usualy come in Hordes with other Monster or in Packs at you.
No but I did play Risk of Rain 2, and other rogue likes, so the concept isn’t alien to me. I guess I just think the Cyber demon is naturally equally strong in Eternal, which might be a stretch.
No, he’s a lot more tame in eternal, and you basically have a way to one shot him if you want to skip him completely.
Eternal is insane, but for different reasons. Funny enough, i think once you know how to do the Eternal dance (which takes a few playthroughs to really get, IME) it gets easier than 2016.
I could never beat the gore neat on Resource Operations on Nightmare, whereas I’ve beat Eternal on nightmare a few times over
Yeah, i picked up Doom 3 but haven’t spent too much time with it. I took a break from all FPSs but now I’m playing Eternal again, trying to get ready for a UN run… I actually think i’m close. I just need fo refine my strats in a couple areas more.
Doom 3 would be a good change of pace after that for sure.
Platforming, weapon mods, enemy types, environments…
It’s all so cool in Eternal. Everyone says it looks better, but with YT compression it’s impossible to tell. From what I’ve seen it’s of a higher visual fidelity, but looks worse in my opinion. I can’t form a proper opinion on it though, because I haven’t played it and because YT sucks. If I can afford it someday, I’ll try getting it.
I got back into single player games big time ever since i stopped playing SFV tbh.
Playing this Star Wars game now, waiting on Cyberpunk as well and started playing more Steep ( snowboard game ).
Good times.
Still missing a FG to play though but i’m waiting on Strive.
It depends what you like. Eternal has more colour, and the enemies look a bit more cartoony, whereas 2016 is a bit darker and more serious. Personally, i find eternal to be more fun, and its brighter aesthetics compliment that, but I can see why people prefer 2016’s aesthetics.
2016 feels like bringing back Doom to modern times while Eternal is the evolution of the franchise.
I personally prefer 2016 but Eternal is tons of fun and it does have better level design than 2016. Having that said,i don’t know if conditioning the enemies with debuffs to spam armor shards and the sorts is the way to go for a Doom game.
It does force you to apply tactics but i basically just got made myself an air control build to maximize my time in the air and mobility while focusing on doing as much damage as i could via splash / aoe damage to enemies. Everything on my screen was a loot pinata.
I mean keep in mind that I know nothing about DOOM and that this is my first game. I don’t know Hayden, or Olivia. I don’t know who I am, how or why I’m locked in a tomb. I don’t know what these demons are and have no clue generally what the hell is happening. As far as I’m concerned, I’m a stone faced murdering machine, so that aspect of 2016 is really enticing. Gore on the walls of a bloody, fiery hell as I rampage through the halls of Satan’s Anus is awesome compared to broken office buildings, at least on the surface. I hope I can come to love Eternal for its visual design philosophy, because in all honesty, the people that recommended the series to me have good taste and I trust them.
I actually thought above giving Laura a spin but I didn’t because she’s one of those characters that I dupe myself into thinking I like when really I just like looking at her.
Also I’m kind of mad you like Ed because fuck I hate everything about that character.
Oh shit you about to join bonita gang?
Nah in case you haven’t noticed I suck with characters that don’t play neutral for me.
That’s basically all you need to know, lol. The rest is just filler to take you from one environment to the next.
2016’s story was better, imo, but I think eternal takes you to a lot of different environments, so the story is kind of all of the place as a result.
I can definitely get that. Eternal does have Hell areas as well (especially Nekravol part 1), but yeah, you also leap from one destroyed office tower to another in one level (edit: two actually lol), and play in Doom’s version of Heaven in another (which really isn’t very heaven-like at all lol).
But 2016 certainly had more hell type of areas and was grittier because of it.
To me, Doom 2016 was a great blend between 3 and 1+2. It had the high speed action of the classics (though with added mechanics and different tactics), but with a bit more a serious tone, moving the bar a little towards Doom 3.
To me, aesthetically (gameplay aside), Eternal leans more into the playful style of the classics, and maybe even over does it in some areas, but I think it excels as a really fun game that doesn’t take itself too seriously.
You do bring up a good point of the armor, as well as the air control stuff. I don’t really get in the air much at all. I’m basically playing 2016 but with a dash, more weapon-switching, and flame belch. I use the meathook to grab armor and sometimes help me move somewhere quicker, or to help fling me up onto a different platform, but I never use it as a catapult during a fight to allow me to fire from above. That may be because i play on controller and it’s hard to get the speed to look around so much in that little time, but yeah, the game would be very different for me if i could do that, and I have a feeling I’d get sick of it quicker.
