THE SF4 BEGINNERS Thread! NEW? POST HERE FIRST!

Sirlin actually talks about this too but only talks about the pros and cons of being an asshole or the nice guy that teaches stuff.
Using Your Power

I’m not the greatest SF4 player but I can understand why I lose. I also understand I can pick the same character and use the same moves as my opponent. I’ve seen scrubs throw tantrums like hitting the cabinet and yelling profusely. They shouldn’t be playing competitive games. They should be in some self help class. I always go all out. If the player is a beginner, he’ll more likely learn a thing or two which would be better for them in the long run.

Just joined Xbox Live today, looking for a good learning experience after having trained solo for a few weeks. The results were unexpected, and now I’m wondering how well my opponents represent the typical Live player:

Almost everyone I played seemed capable of setting up unblockable ultras with Daigo-like precision while, at the same time, failing to do even the most basic defense. My execution is so bad under pressure that attempting to use the ultra, even with my main character, is suicide, but still I won almost every match using nothing fancier than EX moves. (There were, of course, exceptions; two guys really knew what they were doing; I think I had a 14 round losing streak against one of them, at which point he tired of the one-sided learning experience )

They’ve just been practicing against humans, while you haven’t. When you go live, you just have to accept to you will lose tons of times, before you start winning and get long win streaks yourself. People who’ve played for months already are used to the stress and don’t start panicking when they’re pressured, which means tighter execution. Comboing into ultra is something you can learn on the many sub-forums here, and go practice until you can pull off the moves yourself. Noone can teach it to you except yourself :stuck_out_tongue:

But you can read all the right moves and setups in these forums. Practicing against the CPU when you don’t try to improve on something specific is kind of pointless.

Re: playing to win, I believe someone that “plays to win” also plays to learn from their mistakes to improve. That means they’ll not go batshit rage on you, but find out what they did wrong, and stop doing it and move on.

Why was my topic closed? I don’t see that I violated any rules. It wasn’t profane, or attacking anyone. It was a valid discussion. This place has some GEY ass mods. Which is why I hardly come here. So much rudeness here, it’s a dam shame that actual discussions get close for no reason. SMH

If a mod closed your thread he would have written the last post in it as well. If you have questions about why it was closed, or would like it re-opened then you should send that mod a PM and discuss it. Crying here won’t get you any results.

^You could have sent me a PM to say that, so you are just as guilty as me. (Assuming speaking your mind is a crime) If the last word spoken came from a mod, why did he/she/it have to be a smart ass instead of explaining why it was closed, so I (and others) will know next time? (seeing that I READ the rules and found no violation) I shouldn’t have to chase around a MOD for explanations. Seems to me he was just annoyed by my topic, and closed it just cause. Is that how business is done here? If so, I have no problems with that, but remember. Professionalism starts from the top down. So if mods are closing shit with no valid reason other than their own gratification, why in the fuck would/should a n00b go through the proper channels to handle said situation properly? Do as I say, not as I do? Don’t think so. I have no problem hauling ass out of here before I tolerate disrespect from some punk ass mod who probably has to take out his moms garbage in between handing out mass infractions. Believe it!

Questions:

What are some good tips for execution? I think my biggest hurdle right now is trying to execute combos properly - can’t even get through the level 4 normal challenges. Is there some outside resources I should consult? Using a TE stick but still having problems with my timing and stuff.

What’s “riding the gate” and why is it bad?

Why in videos do people sometimes just spam QP in the air for seemingly no reason considering the other player is an entire screen away?

Thank you

I’ve been away from fighting games for a while. I picked up sf4 yesterday (pc). I was wondering when I’m in the corner and have only a sliver of health left and my opponent does a super attack as I’m getting up is there anything I can do to avoid dying from chip dammage?

If it’s a properly timed meaty super then your only real hope is to pull out a reversal that has invincible frames on startup. Which move is best will be character specific, but usually it’ll be your ultra or an EX move.

The frame data on the wiki or the character specific sub-forums will be able to tell you which is best. :pleased:

Sorry to break it to you, but mods are mods for a reason. And calling them egocentric sneaky thread-closing-for-no-reason bastards won’t help you.

A return to Street Fighter after… 13 years!

Hi all!

First, let me just say that you have a great place here! And with really interesting people it seems.

When I was about 15 years old, my favorite game was by far Street Fighter 2. I had it for the Genesis and I can still remember all the fun I had doing Hadoukens, Flash Kicks and Yoga Fires! At the time, I had no knowledge of big combos or anything; I was just mashing the controller, doing special moves and, well, just having fun as a kid. The last SF game I played was Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo for the Genesis (with new characters Cammy, Dee Jay, T. Hawk and Fei Long!)

And now, some 13 years or so later, I decided to give Street Fighter 4 a go. I bought a good arcade stick and got the PS3 version of the game. And boy does it bring back memories!

But I didn’t remembered the game to be that hard! I’m not a kid anymore and of course I want to be competitive and learn how the game system really works. Learn the big combos and how to properly play. But I have a hard time to get started it seems.

The first character I though of learning was Sakura. She has great moves and seemed an ok character. But after reading a bit about her in this here forum and also talking to some people, everybody was saying how she has so little tools to make her a good character and how learning to play with her is an uphill battle. So I moved along.

The next character I though of learning was Fei Long. I remember having fun playing with him a long time ago. But again, the comments about him were how bad a character he is, how he doesn’t have any range and how little damage he is dealing. So I moved along.

I also though about Guile but everybody is saying he’s a really bad character in SF4. Same thing for Vega.

So huh… Is only Sagat good now? haha!

So yeah, apparently I have a hard time to start. Any insight appreciated. Is there only a few characters that are really competitive in SF4?

Thanks!

I just got street fighter 4 for pc and was wondering what I can do to get better with Sagat. When should I do tiger shots? After I do a tiger shot it seems like they always go for a jump in. Is tiger uppercut the strategy if they go for a jump in or should I do something else?

The abbreviations guide absolutely need to be updated, because there are lots of new abbreviations( which I cannot understand).

try mix-ups with high/low fireballs with slow/fast variation, that’d teach them.

Go to the Sagat section in the character section. Then read. Don’t make a new post immediately. Everything you’ll ever need is there.

Which abbreviations do you need help with?

CS.RH, for example.
But there are lots of abbreviations in this thread which aren’t in the list.

CS is no abbreviation. C is crouching, S is standing. Can’t do both at the same time

C.RH would probably be crouching roundhouse = c.hk
S.RH is standing roundhouse = hk

CS.RH is close standing roundhouse. A lot of characters have different standing moves up close. I haven’t really seen “SC” used that much, but it means “Standing Close”, which is the same thing.

You might see several other variations, but they either mean “close” or “crouching”, and it should be relatively easy to determine the meaning from the context.

+1 thx
