what are the general moves that knocks you down that you cannot quick stand from?
Throws and sweeps
i decided to get the madcatz SE edition mainly because of cost and how easy it is 2 mod (or so i read). i havent used a fight stick since i was a kid in the arcade and now i find myself struggling to pull off ultras and other simple moves where b4 it was a cake walk 4 me using a fight pad. mainly quater circle moves. would moding my stick to octogan instead of the current square make it easier to pull off moves? also im interested in learning about different hand positions and general tips and strategies for using a fight stick. im very new to this so any help is greatly appreciated.
^There is no shortcut to using a stick other than playing a crapload of games, sorry. But I was in your same boat a few years ago when I got my first arcade stick, after a couple months you will never be able to play on pad again and it will be second nature, just keep at it.
And IMO you should stick to a square gate because a octo on a japanese stick is pretty much the worst of both worlds.
i would go with sagat…he’s more advance then ken and ryu
Damn I was afraid u were gonna say that lol. Well thanx 4 the encouragment. So wat makes the square gate better than the octo?
Been lurking the SRK forums now for a few months since sf4 showed up on the scene.
Fell in love with the game when I came over to my friend’s house to session. Unfortunately I’m a PC gamer and I don’t own either a 360 or a Ps3, but due to my addiction to this game I almost broke down and bought a 360 just to get SF4 until I found out there was a release slated for the PC on july 7th. A few painstaking months have passed by and my patience has almost come to fruition
Also I am by no means a veteran of fighting games. So here’s to me getting my feet wet in something new…CHEERS.
Going to try and learn Akuma, just something about a badass walking around with sandals appeals to me.
I think you need to read this:
http://slagcoin.com/joystick/restrictors.html
It’ll help your understanding of the different between all of the different restrictors.
Good luck with the stick. Had mine two months and haven’t looked back.
Apologies in advance if this is old; I searched and did not find this mentioned. I thought the newbie thread might be a decent place to mention it. Has anyone tried any of the training offered by people for pay on sites like progamertraining.com? I heard about it on the iPlayWinner podcast (Ep. 2): http://www.iplaywinner.com/news/2009/6/18/iplaywinnercom-podcast-episode-02-feat-gootecks-and-oichi.html
I’m not a total newbie, but I’m certainly stuck at a plateau. All special moves, super moves, ultras, some maneuvering with FA, and the most basic chains come out like second nature. But links, FADC and other more advanced techniques are either over my head or beyond my execution skills. Wondering if anyone has given this stuff a shot, and might want to report in this thread (or elsewhere if appropriate) on their opinion.
Dezertg, I would not recommend paying to learn how to play…if you really are at a plateau there’s two things you can do:
-
Focus one learning one new thing and only that thing until you get it. Whether it be a link or a fadc combo or just breaking a bad habit, just focus on that until you are comfortable with it. Reading too much srk.com can inundate you with strats and tacts to the point where you think you can’t do everything.
-
Find someone either online or a friend in person to practice these things with so you have someone to show you what the combos/techniques look like.
And now I have a question - what is yomi? I feel like this is some term that I missed over the years…like pringles.
Wow i had no idea it was so technical i learned alot. thanx
Yomi is just predicting what your opponent is going to do - using psychic attacks etc.
Mmm …pringles.
Hi,I am a nobody that started to plat SF4 on PC recently.I have alway loved fighting game but there one small problem…I am a total scrub.Well…not exactly,i am kind of decent. The thing is I want to make fighting game my hobby and my passion, but I do not know what it take to become a pro.I have a couple of question I want to ask:
Do you need a natural talent to become a really good player?
How I am supposed to train to get better?
It wrong to pick a character for the physical appearance(and not entirelly on the gameplay)?
Thank for helping me,help really mean to me.
Let’s see. First off if you want to become a pro read Sirlin’s book.
http://www.sirlin.net/ptw/
The book will also answer your question on natural talent.
As for training, EmblemLord recently created an interesting post on the subject.

SF3rdStrike Player
Hey all, I was a huge 3rd strike guy and I picked up SF4 recently but have been falling behind my friends in overall progression from n00b to Daigo. Basically, my mains in 3rd strike were Chun and Akuma. I tried both and akuma has been somewhat successful but I am really looking for a character that plays like chun-li did in 3rd. Does anyone have any advice on a char and if so what things should I really solidify with in order to hold my own? Also, what do they have in common with 3rd strike chun? Thanks!
In the fighting game community, a “scrub” is not someone who sucks, it’s someone who sucks who refuses to do what they need to do to get better at the game, and bitches and refuses to play “cheap” etc to win. Just by your post, you are definitely not a scrub. By definition, people who try to learn more about their games are not scrubs.
how does i get unparanoid when isee my opponents red ultra meter with big flames?
apparently I’m supposed to post here first cause i’m new here, so yeah
new here, bought the streetfighter about 3 weeks ago, tryna get better signed up last month or so.
Sup, bought SF4 on PC with a fightpad a few days ago after all the hype it’s been receiving, I’ve fell under Sims spell, lub playing him <3
I’m trying to do the challenges though and I’m getting infuriated by a challenge, i know it probably is real straight forward, but the penny just hasnt dropped for me yet -_-
**- Medium Kick
- Light Yoga flame**
I thought that to pull off this specific challenge you need to cancel? Cause I’ve threw a MK and YF at Dan but it didn’t complete, but i have no idea how to cancel a move, I’ve read multiple pages @ this site and googled canceling a ton of times, I get the deal with FADC, but i’m just totally lost and this challenge just doesnt seem like one where you are meant to FADC (thats if you even can :x), pressing the focus buttons after the MK does nothing, the move has hit, what is there to cancel? :x
Anyway I hope I’m totally wrong with the way I’m approaching this, and thought posting here instead of making a thread would be a better idea so if anyone could lay this out for me i’d be supah grateful :wgrin:
I have read the Sirlin book, very interresting and I recommend it to anyone who have not read it yet.But there something that still bother me.People say Play to Win.Whe I hear that,I see a angry player that would become batshit insane when he lose.PtW mean to be merciless in a fight, but being friendly outside a match, right?
