THE SF4 BEGINNERS Thread! NEW? POST HERE FIRST!

I have a noob question: sometimes I see Boxer players refering to “SA2” --> what does it stand for in SF4?

Saving attack
which means Focus attack

Saving attack two means a level 2 focus attack

Any use for an FADC with Blanka?

Told by friend

Hi, I’m not sure where to post this but I think here will do in the noob thread.

By friend who I beat with Zangief, Ken and Cammy (got a perfect on him with Cammy) claims that Zangief, Ken and Cammy are considered to be ‘cheap’ by the Street Fighter IV elite. Is this true at all?? and if so isn’t it unbalanced to have cheap fighters in the games?

Cheapness is a relative feeling one associates with characters or moves that they can’t fathom how to beat, or lack the necessary knowledge to develop their skills to beat them… Though even that is generalizing…

Read that link, see if it helps.

Thank you very much!

So basically no fighter is considered ‘cheap’? My friend said I would be and I quote ‘torn to shreds on shoryken’ for asking such a question.

Well, I personally don’t consider any tactic in the game as cheap. If you spam moves, you get predictable. If you get predictable, you get punished. That’s how fighting games work, from Street Fighter to Soul Calibur to Smash Bros.

There comes a time when the community deems a character or a move “broken”, and you’ll usually hear about it. So far, Street Fighter IV’s been tweaked enough that nothing horribly broken has made it’s way in to warrant a ban. It is imbalanced enough that character weakness and strengths become apparent at high-level play when looked at in depth, but it’s really nothing to worry about at your level.

I can’t really give you any advice, aside from “play who you enjoy”. On the other hand, Zangeif and Ken are considered by a large number of players as “noob-friendly”, which is likely why your friend feels decimated.

If you were a real good sport, I would point him in the direction of the character forums and have him ask how to beat your own characters. This game is far more balanced then a large number of games on the market. XD

XD haha, nice thanks! I’ve been practicing at it for a while it seemed pretty low for him to suggest Cammy for me and then go on after I beat him that Cammy was cheap. Thanks hope I was in the right thread!

For the competitive scene, do you think I should learn to press all 3 punch buttons on my stick or go for the 3P button? I find I’m quite decent at the stick just using the 3P instead of doing all 3 punches, but of course I haven’t practiced it that much either.

Am I allowed to use 3p or 3k button at tourneys?
Do you consider those buttons cheating?
Benefits of doing all 3 rather than a single button?

All constructive input appreciated, thanks. Or you can direct me to a link that talks about this, couldn’t find one.

3p/3k buttons arent as cool as actually doing all three punches. if you want to feel like more of a badass, dont use the 3p/3k buttons. i personally do not know of any strategical benefactors regarding these two strategies though…

Rehd: A well known player in our scene was using virtua fighter macros because they were in game and he claimed they were tournament legal at evo for VF5 ( I dunno whether this is true or not). Even though this guy is a WELL KNOWN player in the fighting game community, everyone in Seattle clowned on him hella bad for using any shortcuts.

The general rule of thumb is that most people will think you are lame as hell for using any setup that isn’t available on the arcade cabinet. Stick/dpad+6buttons+start is all you should use.

Plus you are going to handicap yourself down the line if you are going to try to play a game where you can’t have your scrub button.

Hi guys. I have some problems with SF4. First time i’m used offline profile. Game worked fine(60 fps).
Later i’m registered on Live, entered my key. But there was a trouble. When i’m using this account, i have very low fps(10-20), except training mode. If i’m switch to offline mode, it’s fine and i have my 60 fps again.
What i should to do?

What would be the best character for a complete newbie (to SF and any fighting games) to main?

Ryu, Ken or Sagat?

Hey guys, I’m new here, I’m from Canada around Montral. I’m mainly a KoF player and it’s my first serious attempt to SF (I did play SF2 when I was young but ultra uber casually). I didn’t fought online so far, I’m waiting for the PC release. I’m planning to main Dictator, it’s the first charged motion character that I plan to use seriously. I can’t wait to get my ass kicked.

Alex Valle uses 3P and 3K macros on his stick. And yes, they’re legal at Evo.

I happen to prefer having 6 buttons on my stick instead of 8, but that’s just me.

A new Warrior has entered the Ring!

Hey everybody, another new player here! Last time I played a version of SF was on the SNES. When I learned that SFIV was coming to the PC, flashbacks of the good old times came back to me, and so I just had to buy this! :lovin:

I’ve been playing for a few days now. I still lose a lot but I’m having fun. Cool thing is I could get right back into it because Ryu/Ken/Akuma’s special moves are still the same as what, 15 years ago? So yeah, I was the typical Ken scrub for the first day. Until I unlocked Akuma and had fun spamming fireballs from above. It felt a little cheap however, so I wanted to learn another character. Saw a video on Youtube of a fantastically aggressive Guile (some guy named Fuson909), so I’m messing around with him now.

I’m having some problems executing his super or ultra though, with my el-cheapo 15 euro pad. My thumbs are killing after a few hours of play. So I ordered a FightStick TE yesterday, should arrive tomorrow!

I’m a very competitive person, and have played other games (Unreal Tournament) at a competitive level. So even tho I’m a scrub at the moment, be prepared to face me somewhere down the line… :nunchuck:

New here (kind of) - hey

Looking forward to some matches - I definitely won’t be disconnecting or whining when losing - hah, more than likely I’ll feel bad for whoever my opponent will be since I haven’t been interested or played a fighting game in over 10+ years; however, I’ll put my FPS prowess (long, long time q3, warsow, etc) to good use learning this game.

Also, I’m still trying to decide whether or not keeping this mad catz SF4 TE stick makes sense for me…or just settle with the fight pad (bought for my friend but have used it a bit to try out before giving it to him - seems good enough)

Hey guys.
Im new here to, so ill just write a short text about myself.
I’ve never played any Fighting games on a competative level so far, my only beat em up experience would be buttonsmashing in soul calibur with some friends :wgrin:
But now that SF4 is out on PC i’ve decided to play it since i really like it and the way of competition is something i really enjoy.
Ive played WARCRAFT 3 for years on a high level and was one of the best players in germany during those years…but now ive quit that for about a year or so.
Im trying to improve in SF4 as fast as possible, but its pretty hard when you dont know anything about how fighting games like this really work

Ive decied to use Bison as my main char and so far im having fun with him. I guess ill just keep reading here and if theres something i cant figure out ill ask.

bye

ty very nice thread for me

hey. i was wondering about which chars are in SF4 arcade. watching some videos i saw on the char selection screen only the “regular” characters, no unlockables, but then i think in some denjin arcade video someone was playing akuma. is it like different versions of the machine or what?
