THE SF4 BEGINNERS Thread! NEW? POST HERE FIRST!

I am new to Street Fighter 4 and Street Fighter in general. So, I am posting in this thread because the title tells me in all caps to do so.

Here is a weepinbell.

I have been playing SF4 for a few weeks now, so far only been practicing on arcade, training and trial. One thing that’s starting to become increasingly annoying is my inability to FADC into anything. I can cancel into a FA maybe 10% of the time, and many hours of training hasn’t improved this sorry number one bit. It’s still blind luck whenever I manage to cancel into a FA.

I’m playing on the 360, using an arcade controller that I built myself (Seimitsu LS-32 stick, and Seimitsu buttons), so I’m sure the problem is me, not the controller. I’m starting to worry that I’m just not physically fast enough to pull off many of the techniques in this game. For those of you that are able to FADC, how long did you have to train to do it consistently?

Championship mode is a grind even if you win consistently; it’s effectiveness at bracketing people of similar skill is therefore pretty poor. Given the sort of competition you’ll go up against, and the (in my opinion) huge difference lag makes on the game, you probably won’t learn a whole lot playing there. Offline gaming with skilled players is an ideal that a lot of us can’t swing for any number of reasons; failing that, I’d find a good community on your platform of choice (like the one here in the appropriate console section or a more casual crew like the one at Gaming Age) and get involved.

I know it isn’t too helpful, and pretty clich, but the only real way to improve is to play. And the best way to play is against quality opponents who can spot your deficiencies and will point them out to you so you can fix them. Won’t get a whole lot of that from random matches against flowcharts. But if champ mode is your thing, rest assured: if you keep playing, and make the effort to understand why you lost in a given match, eventually you’ll win. The road to success is paved with a seemingly endless number of ‘learning experiences’.

Are you trying to FA out of moves that you can’t FA out of? If not, and it isn’t the stick, the only thing I can say is that you have to make sure you’re inputting everything you want to input in a single continuous motion. I have all sorts of problems with even minimally complex combos, but none with FADCing, so I wouldn’t worry about being too slow.

And hello to all my fellow SF4 (or at least SRK) newbies. Kawaii Synth, have an Appa: http://sokkagetsnorespect.com/wp-content/uploads/anim/book2/216/appa_circles_extralarge.gif

Strange. I’m trying to do Sagat’s hard trial #3:
j.hk ? c.mp ? cancel into heavy TU ? FADC ? f.hk ? ultra

If there were no FADC in this, it would be easy. I can do f.hk ? ultra easily, and j.hk ? c.mp ? cancel into heavy TU is no problem either.

What I do is to input the heavy TU, and as fast as I possibly can, release the hp and hit mp+mk. Sometimes it works, but usually nothing happens. Is it possible to input the FA command too early?

Went back to try it again now, and as if by magic, I can suddenly FA out of moves almost every time. Can’t believe why - I haven’t learned anything new since earlier today. Looks like whining at this forum helped. :wonder:

I have a question.

Can someone please tell me how to play as the second player when someone challenges me in Arcade mode?

I think I read it someone in this thread but I can’t find it. Search feature didn’t help me much.

Hi all.

I’ve been lurking here for about 5 months lol so I though it was about time I signed up.

How does the Counter Attack bonus factor into Level 2 FAs? Does it tack on the bonus frame advantage before a character can be hit in stun and not bounce off the ground, after their knees hit the ground or does it not add anything at all to a focus crumple.

so i was just wondering,

anybody think it is still worth tryiong to mash out of dizzy in sf4?
(or better just to save your stick parts ,than wear them out)

in old sf2 if you gout outta dizzy it would usually just in time to bust out a dp or something.

in sf4 everyone fa’s dizzy people.
so any point trying to mash out?

Dizzy and Focus attack crumple are two different things. Dizzies are when there are stars around your character from getting hit too much too fast and you ran out of stun points. You can mash out of those. (in ST the best way to mash was to go from d/b staight to u/f and you got credit for a half circle motion, dunno if this is true in SFIV though, dizzies are way more rare in this game.)

You cannot mash out of Focus attack crumple at all, it is a set time of vulnerability after getting hit by one.

That’s not what he was asking.

Yes it’s definitely worth mashing out. I’ve seen someone decide too late to do a FA against a dizzy opponent and eat a DP. It was at a tournament too, so it’s definitely worth trying to mash out if you care about the outcome.

…of course I’ve only seen it once. :razzy:

how do you defend against vega’s wall dives? i don’t play him and have no idea what his moves do :frowning:

i’d guess for xboxlive matches i’d rather have the extra life span on the parts.

Mystery solved - after seemingly having lost my FADC ability again, I suddenly remembered that you actually need a couple of EX bars to FADC. That’s why I could only do it about 10% of the time - I needed about 9 failed attempts to sufficiently fill my super meter. Can’t believe I didn’t make the connection before - probably because 2 EX bars seems unbelievably expensive for a simple FADC. At least at my current skill level, 2 EX tiger shots seem more useful.

Right.
To do an EX Focus, it requires two EX Bars.
Laugh.

First off people really need to try and take some character specific questions to those respective forums, or the character you play with. You’ll get more informed answers from people who actually play said characters. Blanka’s electricity is a good answer, so is Ryu’s DP, but if you don’t play them that doesn’t do you much good does it? The game is too dynamic for good catch all answers to questions about specific characters.

That said I’ll tell you two things.

#1 Focusing can be good. Absorb the attack and dash to whatever side he lands on. You’ll have to watch for EX claw strikes and getting thrown however. Your chances of getting thrown decrease if you aren’t at fullscreen as the Vega player will have to deal with the change of spacing.

#2 If you get hit from blocking incorrectly (online) it isn’t necessarily your fault. Those few extra frames of online lag are enough to kill your blocking timing. All you can do for stuff like this is shrug your shoulders and shrug it off. Moves like this become more dangerous online. (see: lag tactics).

Wow I need to build my arcade stick asap. My thumb hurts only playing 30 mins

great game. Paid $25

Depending who u use, u can use your focus attack to counter most of those moves…

True, True i like using dan.

I like using Dan but he does suck in this game. If you have projectiles you can zone him right out of the match.
