THE SF4 BEGINNERS Thread! NEW? POST HERE FIRST!

Bait projectiles or other moves, not moving backwards while holding charge, etc

I press random buttons to keep my mind sharp and to keep my opponet guessing as to what im doing, also jabs are really good

hi im new here an i play Abel im hoping to get better at SF4 i used to play a lil bit of SF2T and MvC2 but i dont play fighting games that much

ok, been playing HDR a lot but i’m new to IV. I mained Ken in HDR but I’m trying to main Akuma in IV due to Ken’s lower tier status (and costume 10 makes Akuma look like a super saiyan lol). I couldn’t buy a win on live for the past week and i finally started getting sporadic wins by doing a crude imitation of HDR-Akuma-style rushdown. Most of my game in HDR revolved around kneebash mixups, and i find myself missing those in IV. Any advice would be appreciated.

hey guys i am new here and thought id say um hello!

totally just discovering the depth of sf 4. Must have been a total noob back in the day on the megadrive / genises for you yanks.

liking the challenge

hi just joined
although I really hate how you have to have 50 posts before you can create your own topic!

oh well…

Took a break and came back to the game… suddenly i’m winning matches. Turns out frustration really screws with your SF play lol.

how come sometimes when i mash option select throw, i still get tossed? am i not doing it fast enough?

Well don’t forget that if you do the option select before you’ve actually been grabbed then cr.LK will come out, so depending on who you’re playing it’ll have about 4 frames of startup during which you can be thrown.

For the option select to work you have to press LP+LK in the 7 frame window after you’ve been grabbed. If you’re getting thrown you’re either too early or too late.

so mashing it doesn’t work?

I always seem to have trouble executing things outside of training mode. I’ve been using a stick for about 2 weeks now and while I practice on executing just my character’s special moves, I find it a lot harder to do them in a match. Maybe it’s the pressure of suffering a humiliating loss or the fear of getting punished for not doing the right move at the exact right time, but when it comes to a match I usually end up turtling since whatever I tried doing failed to even a flowchart ken or something.
I know it sounds stupid, but what should I do to overcome this? I’ve tried just doing matches over and over and playing against different people on Xbox Live but the above gets to me and I feel like putting the game down. Should I keep trying to do the moves in training mode to build up muscle memory? Is it just me being unfamiliar with the stick? This ordeal feels like a giant brick wall seperating me from being the slightest bit competitive and I don’t have any fun playing the game at all anymore.

It can take quite a while to get used a stick if you’ve never had one before. If you’re a beginner on stick and a beginner at SF in general then you’ve got a ways to go. If you’re not having fun, then don’t play, but you can’t expect to be as good as people with more experience.

Muscle memory plays a huge roll in being able to do things in the heat of a match, that’s for sure.

Yes and no.

Most of the time when you mash it out it probably works right? It’s just not a perfect fool-proof solution. It’s also safer for some characters than others if their cr.LK comes out quicker.

Does anyone have a video tutorial on how to double tap?

any toronto sf-er?

Thanks man. Greatly appreciated.

just grinding

Hey all, any recommendations for someone who feels like he is reached a suck plateau? I have recently entered G2 and now the wins are few and far between, when I do win a couple games from 7000CP I end up getting some measly 20 something GP. It seems like such a grind from this point…perhaps I should go back to playing ranked matches with 30 second flow chart Kens?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
