It’s typically an judgment call from the top pros who analyze each character’s move set and use tournament/match experience to judge the overall difficulty of the match. Everyone will have a different opinion on the match, though, and even then, the numbers are only meaningful if the character is played to the full capability known to them. If you’re playing scrubby people and you have a really good handle on your character and know the matchup, the numbers aren’t too meaningful. Oh, and the matchup numbers often change as new tactics are discovered.
For example, Abel vs. Zangief is 3-7. But if the Zangief has no idea what to do, a skilled Abel will win way more than 3 out of every 10 matches.
Typically, a 7-3 matchup is considered “really bad”. You’d have to have significant reason to push it to 8-2, which is a match that is considered nigh unwinnable. 6-4 and 5-5 are common numbers in SF4.
The 360 controller is fine in my honest opinion. There have been few instances where moves I want to come out dont, and more often than not its my fault and not the controller’s. Dont buy into what everyone says that “if you want to play seriously and competitively, you need a stick” Its simply not true. Some people just like blaming the equipment instead of themselves when shit doesnt pan out for them in a fight. More often than not its a matter of them needing to spend more time in Training Mode practicing than wasting money on a stick
And for the record, Ive tried a stick (square gate) and I absolutely hated it. I prefer the 360 controller.
^ There’s really nothing to practice about it, I believe. Mashing two buttons need no practice at all. The difficult part is to know when your opponent is going to try to throw you, and the only way to know is play, play a lot.
I play with the regular 360 pad, I’m just not used to sticks even though I bought a FightStick for SFIV just to get used to them. And even if the d-pad is horrible which, well, really is, I don’t have much trouble with execution, BUT I believe it’s the buttons, and not the sticks, where the difference really shines.
Sometimes I can’t mash the 360 buttons fast enough because of their recoil being so much slower than that of the stick. Things like Chun’s legs or Blanka’s electricity are so much easier -at least to me- to do with a stick.
My first post here, as requested, to introduce myself.
I’ve been playing Street Fighter IV for about a month. Although I can win a lot of the time when I play against scrubs (I think that is the right term? I’ve been lurking a bit!) my game amounts to nothing when I play against someone who knows what they are doing. I can’t even get out of my first group at local tournaments!
I’m not bitching or whining about this. I want to get better. I’m prepared to put in the hard work to get better. So that’s why I’m here.
I’m an E Honda player - I play him because he is my favourite character, has been since SFII, and I’m not gonna switch to an easier character.
So I can probably be found lurking in the E Honda forums trying to soak up tricks and tips.
you shouldn’t go around calling anyone u beat a scrub. they might just be beginners like many of us here. everybody has to start out as a nub at one point or another.
Geez mate, take it easy. JenniferRuth’s post seemed humble enough to me and everyone has lost games so I can’t see any reason to take it so personally. :wonder:
This is the beginner’s thread - let’s keep the negativity elsewhere.
Just a quick question i have been playing SF4 since it comes out about an hour or two a day and i can honestly say i still suck hehe.
How many of you play like the videos i see of players? each time i try and emulate these tactics i get my ass handed to me by some flowchart ken with his insane uppercuts and sagats with his endless tigershots and akumas with jumping fireballs.
The main problem i find is that the timing for online games is alot different to training/arcade mode and being from the UK its pretty near impossible to find an arcade machine to play on
Maybe i should give up on gief and try some shoto because thats all i seem to fight against, and all i see winning the tournys…
Zangief is ridiculous. His lariats have amazing priority and he is strong as hell. If others are doing a good job of keeping you away, then you need to step your game up and find a way in. Green Hand/EX Hand cover a lot of horizontal ground and cancel out fireballs if timed. A good way to move in. Gief is one of the characters I really hate playing as Ryu. If he gets close, I’m pretty screwed. From what I’ve read, people find him one of the best characters to make use of lag online.
If you’re from London, apparently there are a few machines at Trocadero and Casino in Goodge Street. I’m not great by any means but if you want a few games, add me. I’m from the UK btw. Lol. Also it might be an idea to check out neoempire (the UK SRK pretty much) to find out about local arcades and sessions.
Now onto my question - I swear there is a list somewhere of the attributes of all the characters’ EX moves but I can’t seem to find it. I’ve done a search to no avail. Can anyone link me to a list on here or anywhere else? I know Eventhubs has the attributes but you can only see one character at a time. It’s no biggie really but it would be nice. Cheers in advance.
Its not that his Lariat has amazing “priority”, its just that it has a great hit box and other properties. It makes him invincible for a short time (cant sweep or shoot projectiles a him), and the hit box is just too good. But if they are spamming Lariat, block the 1st or 2nd hit then punish them with a Super, Ultra, or hard hitting combo
Awesome. Cheers man. Couldn’t remember the thread title and you can’t search for ‘EX’ because it’s too short.
And not to question Clx, but I was under the impression that ‘great hit boxes’ and ‘other properties’ are the reasons why a move is high priority. So saying a move is high priority and saying a move is great because it has huge hit boxes and other characteristics are fundamentally the same thing, right? I’m pretty new to the terminology so by all means correct me if I’m wrong.
Would someone direct me to where I can find tips/hints on how to complete the Survival mode on Normal? If there is a thread please let me know. I have tried to search keyword “Survival” but there is nothing specific I see. This is in regards to Lvl 12 on Normal Survival, or any Survival. Thanks
