Mainer
Hey, guys. The names SM00TH CR1M1N4L. I’m actually pretty new to the Street Fighter world. I grew up with Super Smash Bros., but I have seemed to take a liking to Street Fighter (particularly SFIV). I have decided to try my hand at competitive SF play, so any tips or hints would be greatly appreciated.
I also am a very indecisive person, and when it comes to fighting games (and all video games for that matter) I have a very difficult time choosing a main. This, obviously, leads to a hard time mastering a single character. I would like to change this bad habit for SFIV. So, any helpful tips on choosing a main would also be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys and hello!

Step 1) Pick someone.
Step 2) Don’t pick anyone else.
I’d probably say a shoto character like ryu, ken, or sagat are best to start off with. They are very versatile and great for newbies like us.
Btw, I’ve been doing normal trials with ryu and I’m stuck.
I have to do: j.hp - hk - super ( shinku hadouken )
But I just can’t seem to get it right between the heavy kick and the super
Any tips on that?
I don’t really like playing with the shoto characters except for Gouken. They just seemed very over played and abused. I don’t mind picking a low tier; I just have a hard time picking!
Sorry. I don’t have any tips. I’m just as new to this as you are, but I can say this: Try to input the next move during the animation of the previous move. I just eventually get the flow down in my fingers. :wgrin:
Thanks for the tip, I didn’t even know that was possible lol!
So, here’s my little introduction…
I used to play SFII and most of its many incarnations back in the day then dropped off the map for a while. MvC picked me back up after my stint of playing other stuff and I played MvC2 semi-seriously in the arcades for a while. I fell off the map again until HDR and now I’m stuck on SFIV.
I’m really enjoying it but missing the arcade scene since good 'ol Portland here doesn’t have any arcades that have it yet. Or any places that regularly play the console versions. I’m planning to try to rectify this problem so expect to see me posting about fairly casual tournaments in the near future!
Uegwen, I’d watch the innocent comments you make on this thread about yourself. There are some bitches that feel the need to talk bad about you through the internets. I know from personal experience. Haha
sry this is question should belong in the tech talk but don’t feel like creating a new thread just for a simple question.
I’ve been using a stick for around a month now, using a seimitsu ls 32 and recently bought a TE and it has a sanwa JLF joystick and i can do everything much faster on the ls 32 like 2x qcf ultra because on the ls 32 i can qcf then neutral and qcf again really fast but it doesn’t go that well for me using a JLF so my question is, should i try learning to hold the stick all the time (not letting it go to neutral) and just practice practice with the JLF as i’m planning on just using the TE.
Thanks :wgrin:
If you’re doing ultra motions, you should never go to neutral. Just do a quick d to forward, right back to down to forward (like you’re making a triangle almost with the square gate). Using the excuse that you’re not used to one jap stick because you play on another isn’t going to win you matches or anything. I mean if you’re used to american and switch to jap, then yeah, you can complain slightly but going from sanwa to seimitsu is like florida oranges compared to texas oranges instead of apples to oranges.
thanks for the response will practice some after Gootecks barfight stream in 30min
Hi Im new (obviously) any tips on how to fadc to ultra with ryu?
how can you tell for sure that your meaty hit was actually a meaty hit?
If the “reversal” notification pops up on their side and you still hit them. I think
This would only be true for specials that are not invincible on startup. If it is invincible, your attack very well might have been “meaty” and still get beaten out.
Meaty only means that you are hitting with active frames past the first active frame, it doesn’t usually have any special properties the normal usually doesn’t have.
Meaties are incredibly toned down in this game compared to past SF’s BTW, I wouldn’t be super worried about them.
edit: I just remembered, in SFIV all reversal specials have armor breaking properties too, don’t forget that if you are trying to do a meaty focus.
hi all, another SF4 noob here
dont ask me why, but i decided to main Rose from the very beguinning.
i know she is clearly low tier because she is not very balanced (her especials are quite nerfed), but you know, we need more people playing other chars than shotos/sagat/zangief/blankas
ill try to do my best
Im an SF4 noob…Im kinda used to 3s…I main Ryu and i dont have a 2nd char…
Any good recommendations for alt char??
