THE SF4 BEGINNERS Thread! NEW? POST HERE FIRST!

Only question i can answer…

IF you can hit the person twice before the Focus Attack hits you, then you can break it…

The Focus Attack absorbs one attack, so your job is to attack quickly with a follow up to break it… This is best done with quick punches/kicks (Low/Medium) attacks…

the only people who are gonna actually get angry with you are people who don’t really know how to play well. they play the game for fun, and that involves unspoken rules about picking a variety of characters, trying to use all of their moves, and not being cheap. if you wanna get good, you’re going to have to ignore these people. just keep practicing your main and get good. don’t be concerned with what other people might think.

despite all this, i still have phobias about throwing too much. i really have to get over that!

i don’t think there is any rolling in sf4. there is only quick recovery. you cannot be touched by anything during the recovery animation.

good questions

  1. sf4 is a little strange in this department. there have been several threads with people complaining about how the game is too forgiving with input corrections. people often do a move in one direction, but if their opponent crosses them up, the game automatically changes the direction for you.

but it’s going to be different for every move, since timing is different. for now, i would keep doing :qcf: in the original direction to see if the game corrects it for you. if it doesn’t, then try switching it up. for some moves, it’s just not going to work either way.

  1. you’re probably thinking about reversals. if a non-armor breaking move is done as a reversal, it will break the armor. for example, if ryu does a wake up reversal shoryuken, it will break armor, even though it doesn’t have inherent armor breaking properties.

  2. the original mook from which the frame data was extracted actually has detailed descriptions about invincibility. it’s a shame if those parts weren’t translated!

but, if you put in a little effort in the character specific threads, you’ll probably find that information in there.

so i know you can dash cancel a focus, got that down

and i know you can focus cancel an Ex move

but in some videos online people say to cancel a regular attack, now how would i do that?

also is there a site for complete newbs at SF4, i mean i can feel myself getting better, but all these sites where they answer my questions, answer with things like m.cp for something, i dont know what it means XD

you can cancel a special move too (it doesn’t have to be ex). best way to figure this stuff out is to just go into training mode, and set your meters to max.

when you say some people cancel regular attack, do you mean just a normal attack? like a standing roundhouse kick? or do you mean a regular special move? i think you can link a normal attack into a focus attack, but i don’t think you can cancel it. i might be wrong.

i think this forum is the best and has the most information for newbies (especially this thread).

c.mp means crouching medium punch. if you take a look at one of the combo threads for your character, you will usually see a key at the top of the first post.

I need tips on move execution and combos. I feel sometimes when I’m playing I’ll put the input for a move, but instead something else comes out, then I’ll lose a match cause my ultra didn’t come out when i needed it most.

It could be because I’ve always used a controller to play fighters and rarely played at arcades taht maybe I’m not used to arcade sticks.

wITH D-pad i own, with joystick, i get owned.

Thanks

Don’t forget some moves on the characters have armor breaking moves as well. There’s only a few I know off the top of my head: Hurricane Kick on Ryu and Ken and Thousand Kicks for Chun Li, but if you look it up in a moves list, there’s usually a notation for armor breaking moves. Not to mention, some moves that aren’t armor breaking but have multiple hits work as well too, like Ken’s Shoryuken, or a close-up Spiral Arrow from Cammy.

who is your character?

learning combos is pretty hard for me as well. i usually spend at least 2 days in training mode trying to do a combo before i can execute it 90% of the time.

keep in mind that if you cancel a normal into another normal, you cannot cancel that last normal into a special. this may require you to work on timing to make sure that you LINK your normals, and not cancel them. for example, balrog’s bnb combo: c.lp ~ c.lp ~c.lk xx headbutt. to do this combo, you need to pause slightly between the 2nd c.lp and the c.lk, otherwise they will cancel and not link, and the headbutt will never come out.

once you get this concept down, then its all about timing, and if you practice enough then your brain will just remember it and it should come out pretty easy every time.

i’m a stick player, but there are top players who use pads and are successful. i would just use whatever is comfortable to you.

New to street fighter and having trouble picking a character…
Which of the characters are considered to be specifically offensive?

cool cool, thanks!

and yeah i meant a regular move like a jap or something not a particular special move

i think the video i was watching was an ign video for begginers (i know lol) but they said to do something like 2 punches and cancel the second punch and go into shory(it was ken if it matters)

again, i do appreciate the help!

Does anyone know where I can find an online guide to unlocking icons/titles? I know about the titles from trial modes, but there are still a lot more out there. If anyone knows a place I could find some info on that would be sweet.

Has most of the requirements

very nice link thanks a bunch

you can fadc any normal that can be canceled into a special move. for example, because ken’s close hp can be canceled into srk, close hp can also be fadc’d.

ken’s far hk, however, cannot be canceled into any special moves, and thus can’t be fadc’d either.

i see you’re asking about canceling into special moves. this has been covered several times in this and the other beginner’s thread, so you can skim through them to get more info, but the basic gist of it is that you have to VERY quickly do the special move before the normal move finishes its animation (more specifically, its active frames).

for ken’s custom combo into srk, you would do:

mp, hp, :dp: hp

but that last part has to be super fast so that it comes out before the first hp finishes.

also, you can make it easier by doing:

:r: + mp, hp, :d: :df: hp

this is possible because :r: + mp is not a special normal for ken. if :r: + mp was a different move from mp (like ryu’s), then this short cut would not work.

this is probably going to be very difficult at first. maybe practice first with the basic crouching mk to hadoken cancel first.

practice is everything.

good luck.

Thats interesting concept. I assumed if you were following any normal move with another non-special move, it would always be a link.

In a couple of the trail challenges they require to execute consecutive a series of normals, before executing a special move. I.E. sakura’s" c/LK~c/LK~DP.

So in order to pull this off, you must be careful to link those normals and not cancel them or else your DP won’t come out?

I use C.Viper. She’s not my best character but I’m learning to use her cuz she rocks.

thanks for your help . I was browsing forever via google and I couldn’t find any other sites or guides to help me out.

Hello, First of all I’d like to introduce myself: I’m Warlike and I’ve been lurking here for the past few weeks and finally registered because this site is great. I have recently bought SFIV. I’ve played 2d fighters in the past like garou MOTW and other SNK games ( emulated ).

But SFIV is my first actual game that I’m really serious about and I love it, so much that I actually will be buying a lot more future fighters such as KOFXII and Blazblue.

Anyway, as a street fighter noob I have a question:

I’ve been maining Ryu for a while now and I’m doing pretty well considering I’m totally new to street fighter. I’ve managed to sustain a 1500BP now, but I feel as if I play a little to predictable sometimes. So I’ve been thinking to mix things up a little bit by maining someone else just for the heck of it, preferably not a shoto.
But who is best suited for a total noob like me?

:looney:

how do you avoid getting thrown on wakeup. do u just mash jabs or shorts?

I am pretty new myself but I would say Rufus is pretty easy to get combos out of. His Heavy Kick in the air combos into a lot. I like using Balrog as well .

You can do a throw yourself and it will cancel both throws if you dont want to do one of your special moves from wake up.

Wassup everyone,

Ive been in the SF scene since good old SF2 and havent looked back. Youll find me playin SF4 all hours of the night est just chillaxin. Catch yall in the fight.

Paul

reversaling a backdashing, jump, or a move with throw-invulnerability

mashing jabs a such won’t work, since they can meaty the throw and you’ll just end up getting thrown out of your jab

and like the above poster said, you can also break the throw
