In all honesty, it is probably human error. Tapping the button a fraction of a second too early or not moving the stick/d-pad quite right to register all the points you need to hit. The fact that you hit srks 9 times out of 10 when you try an ultra suggests you are doing the wrong move. You may think you’re pulling off 2xQCFs but you’re probably missing it somehow. Have you been trying it out in the practice mode and turned on input display? Just go in there and spam ultras until you can do at least three in a row. Every now and then when my move aren’t coming off, that’s what I tend to do. Seriously I have a stick now and it still happens to me even now I’m quite used to it.

Sorta of.
A crossup happens when a player does an attack that crosses from one side of you to the other. For example, if Ryu jumps and throws out a kick and crosses over your head, he can still connect with the back of your head as he is coming down behind you.

This blow would need to be blocked in the opposite direction than normal because the game registers the hit as coming from behind you, rather than in front. So you end up actually having to hold the direction you’re facing to block.

It can be kind of tricky at first, but it’s not too bad to get a feel for in this game.

Yeah the fuzzy inputs can get a lot of people. I can do ultras over and over without getting SRKs on Pad, I was forced to play that way for a month until my stick came. One thing that you may be doing is pressing the punch/kick button too soon. If you’re hitting it at down forward you really up the chances you’re going to get a SRK since it ends in that motion. (So if you do QCF, QCF but hit just D, DF on the second QCF you’ll get an SRK more than likely.)

What’s the frame data on throw teching?

Also, how does option select throw teching while blocking work exactly?

According to the SRK Wiki “Normal throws can be escaped by pressing LP + LK within 10 frames of the opponent starting to throw (within 7 frames of the throw hitting)”

Also from the Wiki "you can for instance hold down/back on the stick and press LP + LK. This will result in an escape if the opponent tried to throw, and a crouching attack if they did something else. "

what’s el fuerte’s “RSF” move???

Thanks.

Also, how many frames do Abel/Zang’s command throws come out in?

All throws miss when the opponent has begun his jumping frames right?

In terms of Focus attacks, how do they differ exactly?

Almost all of them have the exact same startup and recovery yet they’re all noticeably different. I can see range as being a key difference, but is there priority differences between them as well?

The other day, a friend and I tested viper vs ryu in terms of FA’s. We’d hit mp+mk with viper and a split second later, hit mp+mk w/ ryu. The stupid thing was ryu beat viper every time in terms of lvl 1 FA. They were right next to each other so it wasn’t a hitbox thing. Is the frame data for focus attacks plain wrong is is there more to it?

RSF = RUN STOP FIERCE, AKA elf’s fierce run cancel infinite

What’s up SRK,

I’ve been a long-time lurker (since MvC2 days), but have only played fighting games casually until SF4 came out.

Thanks for all the useful tips in this thread, I thought I would contribute…

I was doing some searching on footsie basics and found a GREAT thread in the CvS2 forum explaining some concepts for building a strong ground game… It’s something everyone could find if they use the search function… but I thought I’d put it here for reference:

Cheers,

How do you Ultra an Ultra? Do you do the motions during their startup and hit the kicks or punches as soon as their animation is done? Or do the entire combo as soon as their animation is done?

thanks for having such a helpful thread!

Not quite sure if this belongs in this thread, but…

Does anyone know how the Host system works in this game?

Is the ‘Host’ receiving a playing experience that is practically ‘offline’ (and thus having an advantage over the non-host)?

I know in FPS games (such as Halo), there is a host advantage because the Host sees everything in real-time, whereas everyone else is delayed (usually not much, but it depends upon their connection to the host).

Not sure how this works in fighters such as SF4. Does Host have a big advantage (ie, no lag)?

Thanks for any help.

how do you punish players that crouch and spam quick pokes? like for example a crouching balrog spamming jab. when i finish my poke string, i try to go for a throw if he is blocking but always gets hit by the jabs. it seems like a good defense. any way to counter this?

Kinda depends on who you play. If you have an EX move that will reach them, once they counter poke hit em with that

Poke their pokes. Let them whiff their poke, then poke them as they’re recovering.

but balrog’s jab is really fast… can you really hit them while they recover? what kind of move should you use?

Yeah, jabs are really fast. Counter poking jabs are more about spacing and anticipation, then it is about reflexes. The anticipation part should be easy, since Whoever is spamming them.

What move to use? Depends what character you are playing, which you haven’t told us yet. Or you can go into training mode and set the dummy to mash jab and figure it out yourself.

That will happen with any two Focus attacks in the game, the one you do later will always win.

Focus attacks have armor until they hit someone, which means they will absorb one hit. What is happening is that Ryu was using the armor to absorb Viper’s focus attack, and then he is hitting her out of her recovery.

Focus attacks vary in startup, recovery, range and also the hitboxes, they’re all unique.

extreme noob question with FADC’s, but it’s really been bothering me

–> i can somewhat do ryu’s basic “hp srk -> fadc -> ultra”, but i have no way of doing it consistantly…

is there any kind of trick to pre-dash or do something like foward, foward + focus so that it auto dashes when you focus? it seems disturbingly difficult for me to pause and actually keep holding the focus and dash twice and then go for the ultra…also the speed which i see it done by good players makes me think there’s some trick to it :frowning:

How are Gouken/Gouki pronounced?

Also what’s the Japanese letter that glows on Akuma’s back? (and is that called a kanji or hiragana or katakana)

There’s been lots of discussion on ways to FADC:
http://forums.shoryuken.com/showthread.php?t=179898
http://forums.shoryuken.com/showthread.php?t=180383

The consensus generally seems to be that this is the best way to do it:
:r::d::df:+:hp:, :r:, :mp:+:mk::r:, :qcf::qcf:+:3p:

So basically you can buffer one :r: before you focus, and you don’t need to hold :mp: + :mk: you can just tap them.

Practicing with Ryu is a good idea because you have quite a bit of time to get it all out. If you practice a lot then it’ll get engraved in your muscle memory and it won’t feel so daunting. :woot:

Edit:

Gouken is pronounced as it’s written.
Gouki is pronounced “Akuma”

Wikipedia: “The kanji ‘ten’ (?) - meaning “sky”, “heaven”, or “providence”, (all in the spiritual sense) - can be seen on his back when it appears during certain win animations.”
